Flattery, in the biblical context, is often portrayed as insincere praise or excessive compliments, typically given to achieve a selfish or deceitful purpose. The Bible warns believers to be cautious of flattery, as it can lead to deception and moral compromise.

Biblical Warnings Against Flattery

The Scriptures provide numerous warnings about the dangers of flattery. Proverbs 26:28 states, "A lying tongue hates those it crushes, and a flattering mouth causes ruin." This verse highlights the destructive nature of flattery, equating it with deceit and harm. Flattery is often used as a tool by those with malicious intent, seeking to manipulate or control others for personal gain.

In Proverbs 29:5 , it is written, "A man who flatters his neighbor spreads a net for his feet." Here, flattery is likened to a trap, suggesting that those who indulge in or fall for flattery may find themselves ensnared in unforeseen troubles.

Flattery in the Context of Sin and Temptation

Flattery is frequently associated with sin and temptation in the Bible. In the book of Daniel, the prophet warns against the deceitful nature of flattery. Daniel 11:32 says, "With flattery he will corrupt those who violate the covenant, but the people who know their God will firmly resist him." This passage refers to the Antichrist's use of flattery to lead people astray, emphasizing the need for spiritual discernment and steadfastness in faith.

The New Testament also addresses the issue of flattery. In Romans 16:18 , Paul warns the church in Rome, "For such people are not serving our Lord Christ, but their own appetites. By smooth talk and flattery, they deceive the hearts of the naive." This admonition underscores the potential for flattery to lead believers away from the truth and into error.

Flattery and False Prophets

Flattery is a common tactic of false prophets and teachers, who use it to gain influence and sway over their followers. In Jude 1:16 , the apostle describes such individuals: "These men are discontented grumblers, following after their own lusts; their mouths spew arrogance; they flatter others for their own advantage." This verse highlights the self-serving nature of flattery and its role in the spread of false teachings.

The Call for Discernment

The Bible calls for believers to exercise discernment and wisdom in the face of flattery. Proverbs 7:21 warns of the seductive power of flattery, particularly in the context of sexual immorality: "With her great persuasion she entices him; with her flattering lips she lures him." This serves as a reminder to remain vigilant and grounded in God's Word, resisting the allure of flattering words that lead to sin.

The Example of Jesus

Jesus Christ, during His earthly ministry, demonstrated an awareness of the dangers of flattery. In Luke 20:21-23 , the Pharisees and Herodians attempt to flatter Jesus, saying, "Teacher, we know that You speak and teach correctly, and You show no partiality but teach the way of God in accordance with the truth." Jesus, perceiving their duplicity, responds with wisdom, exposing their hypocrisy. His example teaches believers to remain steadfast and discerning, recognizing the true intentions behind flattering words.

In summary, the Bible consistently warns against the perils of flattery, urging believers to be cautious and discerning. Flattery is often a tool of deception, used by those with ulterior motives to lead others astray. By grounding themselves in Scripture and seeking the guidance of the Holy Spirit, Christians can guard against the seductive power of flattery and remain faithful to God's truth.
