Definition and Nature
Alienation from God refers to the state of being estranged or separated from God due to sin. This condition is a fundamental aspect of the human experience post-Fall, as described in the Bible. It is characterized by a spiritual disconnection from God, resulting in a lack of fellowship and intimacy with the Creator.

Biblical Foundation
The concept of alienation from God is rooted in the narrative of the Fall in Genesis. When Adam and Eve disobeyed God by eating from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, they experienced immediate spiritual separation from God. Genesis 3:23-24 states, "So the LORD God banished him from the Garden of Eden to work the ground from which he had been taken. After He drove the man out, He placed on the east side of the Garden of Eden cherubim and a flaming sword flashing back and forth to guard the way to the tree of life."

Sin as the Cause
Sin is the primary cause of alienation from God. Isaiah 59:2 declares, "But your iniquities have built barriers between you and your God, and your sins have hidden His face from you, so that He will not hear." Sin creates a chasm between humanity and God, preventing the relationship that was intended at creation.

Consequences of Alienation
The consequences of alienation from God are both spiritual and existential. Spiritually, it results in death, as stated in Romans 6:23 , "For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord." Existentially, it leads to a sense of emptiness, purposelessness, and a lack of peace, as humanity seeks fulfillment apart from God.

Reconciliation through Christ
The New Testament presents Jesus Christ as the solution to alienation from God. Through His sacrificial death and resurrection, reconciliation is made possible. Colossians 1:21-22 explains, "Once you were alienated from God and were hostile in your minds because of your evil deeds. But now He has reconciled you by Christ’s physical body through death to present you holy, unblemished, and blameless in His presence."

The Role of Faith and Repentance
Reconciliation with God requires faith in Jesus Christ and repentance from sin. Acts 3:19 urges, "Repent, then, and turn back, so that your sins may be wiped away." Faith in Christ restores the broken relationship, allowing believers to experience the fullness of life intended by God.

The New Creation
Believers who are reconciled to God become new creations, as described in 2 Corinthians 5:17 , "Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come!" This transformation marks the end of alienation and the beginning of a restored relationship with God.

Ongoing Struggle with Sin
While reconciliation is complete in Christ, believers continue to struggle with sin, which can affect their fellowship with God. 1 John 1:8-9 advises, "If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness." Confession and repentance are ongoing aspects of maintaining a close relationship with God.

Eternal Implications
The ultimate consequence of unresolved alienation from God is eternal separation, as described in Revelation 20:15 , "And if anyone was found whose name was not written in the Book of Life, he was thrown into the lake of fire." Conversely, those reconciled to God through Christ will enjoy eternal life in His presence.
