Little children, I am with you only a little while longer. You will look for Me, and as I said to the Jews, so now I say to you: 'Where I am going, you cannot come.' Little children,Jesus addresses the disciples with tender pastoral affection on the night before His crucifixion. Though they had walked with Him, they still needed the care, instruction, and protection of the One who had revealed the Father to them. John later uses similar family language for believers under his spiritual care. 1Jn 2:1 My little children, I am writing these things to you…… I am with you only a little while longer. The cross, resurrection, and ascension were near. Jesus would soon cease to be physically present with the disciples, making His final words in the upper room especially urgent. His departure would not end His care for them, for He would send the Holy Spirit and remain with His people through the Spirit’s presence. Jhn 7:33 So Jesus said, “I am with you only a little while longer,… You will look for Me, Grief and confusion would follow Jesus’ arrest and death. The disciples would seek the Master they had trusted, yet they would not initially understand that His death was the appointed path to victory over sin and death. Jhn 7:34 You will look for Me, but you will not find Me;… and as I said to the Jews, Jesus had warned the crowds and religious leaders that they could not follow Him where He was going. Their unbelief kept them from receiving the One sent by the Father, while the disciples’ temporary inability to follow arose from the unfinished work still before them. Jhn 8:22-24 So the Jews began to ask, “Will He kill Himself,”… so now I say to you: Jesus prepares His disciples for a separation that would test their faith. He speaks plainly before the events of the night unfold, so that their later remembrance would strengthen their confidence in His sovereign purpose. Jhn 14:29 And now I have told you before it happens,… ‘Where I am going, you cannot come.’ Jesus alone could go to the cross as the sin-bearing Savior, rise in triumph, and ascend to the Father’s right hand. The disciples would not accompany Him in that immediate departure, but He would later bring them into the Father’s house through His death and resurrection.
