How can we prepare for Christ's return as described in Matthew 24:27? Lightning Across the Sky—The Pattern for Our Preparation “For just as the lightning comes from the east and flashes as far as the west, so will be the coming of the Son of Man.” (Matthew 24:27) What the Lightning Teaches • Sudden—no warning, no time to scramble • Visible—no one misses a streak that spans the sky • Universal—east to west, everyone under that heaven sees it • Unstoppable—lightning needs no permission to strike Because Christ’s return will mirror these qualities, our readiness cannot be partial, delayed, or uncertain. Living Ready Every Moment • Keep short accounts with God: “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins.” (1 John 1:9) • Maintain a clean conscience: “…so that when He appears we may have confidence.” (1 John 2:28) • Cultivate daily fellowship with the Lord through Scripture and obedience (John 15:5). Anchoring in Truth: Guarding Against Deception • Matthew 24:4-5 warns of false christs; constant Scripture intake protects the mind. • Acts 17:11—imitate the Bereans by examining “the Scriptures every day to see if these teachings were true.” • 2 Peter 3:17—remain “on guard so that you will not be carried away by the error of lawless men.” Pursuing Holiness and Obedience • 1 Peter 1:15-16—“Be holy in all you do.” • 2 Corinthians 7:1—cleanse ourselves “from every defilement of body and spirit.” • Hebrews 12:14—without holiness “no one will see the Lord.” Engaging in Watchful Prayer • Matthew 26:41—“Watch and pray so that you will not enter into temptation.” • Colossians 4:2—“Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful.” • Prayer keeps the heart alert, sensitive, and joyful. Faithful Stewardship of Gifts and Opportunities • Matthew 24:45-46—blessed is the servant found doing his assigned work. • 1 Corinthians 4:2—“it is required of stewards that they be found faithful.” • Parable of the talents (Matthew 25:14-30) urges diligent use of time, abilities, and resources. Encouraging One Another • Hebrews 10:24-25—spur one another on “all the more as you see the Day approaching.” • 1 Thessalonians 4:16-18—comfort each other with the certainty of His return. • Mutual support resists discouragement and fosters perseverance. Proclaiming the Gospel to All Nations • Matthew 24:14—the gospel must be preached “in all the world as a testimony to all nations.” • Romans 10:14-15—faith comes by hearing; we participate by sending and speaking. • 2 Peter 3:9—the Lord delays in mercy, “not wanting anyone to perish.” Looking Up with Confidence • Titus 2:13—“while we wait for the blessed hope—the glorious appearing of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ.” • Revelation 1:7—“every eye will see Him.” • 1 Corinthians 15:52—“in an instant, in the twinkling of an eye… the dead will be raised imperishable.” His coming will be like lightning—unexpected, unmistakable, unstoppable. By walking in holiness, guarding our minds with truth, praying watchfully, stewarding faithfully, encouraging one another, and spreading the gospel, we stay poised for that dazzling moment when the sky flashes and the Son of Man appears. |
