1 And a man from the house of Levi went, and he took a daughter of Levi. 2 And the woman conceived and bore a son, and she saw him, that he was good, and she hid him for three months. 3 And she was not able to hid him anymore, and she took for him an ark of papyrus and daubed it with tar and with pitch, and she put the child in it and she placed it in the reeds along the edge of the River. 4 And his sister stationed herself from a distance, to know what would be done to him. 5 And the daughter of Pharaoh came down to bathe at the River, and her maidens were walking along the hand of the River. And she saw the ark in the midst of the reeds, and she sent her maidservant and she took it. 6 And she opened it, and she saw the child, and behold, a boy weeping. And she had compassion on him, and she said, “This is one of the children of the Hebrews.” 7 And his sister said to the daughter of Pharaoh, “Shall I go and call for you a nursing woman from the Hebrewesses, that she may nurse for you the child?” 8 And the daughter of Pharaoh said to her, “Go.” And the girl went and called the mother of the child. 9 And the daughter of Pharaoh said to her, “Take away this child and nurse him for me, and I will give you your wage.” And the woman took the child and nursed him. 10 And the child grew, and she brought him to the daughter of Pharaoh, and he became to her as a son. And she called his name Moses and she said, “Because I drew him out of the water.” 11 And it came to pass in those days, and Moses had grown, and he went out to his brothers and he saw in their burdens, and he saw a man, an Egyptian, striking a man, a Hebrew, from his brothers. 12 And he turned this way and that way, and he saw that there was no man, and he struck the Egyptian and hid him in the sand.
