But speak thou the things which befit the sound doctrine: But as for you, teach what accords with sound doctrine. You, however, must teach what is appropriate to sound doctrine.
that aged men be temperate, grave, soberminded, sound in faith, in love, in patience: Older men are to be sober-minded, dignified, self-controlled, sound in faith, in love, and in steadfastness. Teach the older men to be temperate, worthy of respect, self-controlled, and sound in faith, in love and in endurance.
that aged women likewise be reverent in demeanour, not slanderers nor enslaved to much wine, teachers of that which is good; Older women likewise are to be reverent in behavior, not slanderers or slaves to much wine. They are to teach what is good, Likewise, teach the older women to be reverent in the way they live, not to be slanderers or addicted to much wine, but to teach what is good.
that they may train the young women to love their husbands, to love their children, and so train the young women to love their husbands and children, Then they can urge the younger women to love their husbands and children,
to be soberminded, chaste, workers at home, kind, being in subjection to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed: to be self-controlled, pure, working at home, kind, and submissive to their own husbands, that the word of God may not be reviled. to be self-controlled and pure, to be busy at home, to be kind, and to be subject to their husbands, so that no one will malign the word of God.
the younger men likewise exhort to be soberminded: Likewise, urge the younger men to be self-controlled. Similarly, encourage the young men to be self-controlled.
in all things shewing thyself an ensample of good works; in thy doctrine shewing uncorruptness, gravity, Show yourself in all respects to be a model of good works, and in your teaching show integrity, dignity, In everything set them an example by doing what is good. In your teaching show integrity, seriousness
sound speech, that cannot be condemned; that he that is of the contrary part may be ashamed, having no evil thing to say of us. and sound speech that cannot be condemned, so that an opponent may be put to shame, having nothing evil to say about us. and soundness of speech that cannot be condemned, so that those who oppose you may be ashamed because they have nothing bad to say about us.
Exhort servants to be in subjection to their own masters, and to be well-pleasing to them in all things; not gainsaying; Bondservants are to be submissive to their own masters in everything; they are to be well-pleasing, not argumentative, Teach slaves to be subject to their masters in everything, to try to please them, not to talk back to them,
not purloining, but shewing all good fidelity; that they may adorn the doctrine of God our Saviour in all things. not pilfering, but showing all good faith, so that in everything they may adorn the doctrine of God our Savior. and not to steal from them, but to show that they can be fully trusted, so that in every way they will make the teaching about God our Savior attractive.
For the grace of God hath appeared, bringing salvation to all men, For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people, For the grace of God has appeared that offers salvation to all people.
instructing us, to the intent that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly and righteously and godly in this present world; training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in the present age, It teaches us to say “No” to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age,
looking for the blessed hope and appearing of the glory of our great God and Saviour Jesus Christ; waiting for our blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, while we wait for the blessed hope—the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ,
who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a people for his own possession, zealous of good works. who gave himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness and to purify for himself a people for his own possession who are zealous for good works. who gave himself for us to redeem us from all wickedness and to purify for himself a people that are his very own, eager to do what is good.
These things speak and exhort and reprove with all authority. Let no man despise thee. Declare these things; exhort and rebuke with all authority. Let no one disregard you. These, then, are the things you should teach. Encourage and rebuke with all authority. Do not let anyone despise you.
