1 But do thou speak the things that become sound teaching; But as for you, teach what accords with sound doctrine. You, however, must teach what is appropriate to sound doctrine.
2 that the elder men be sober, grave, discreet, sound in faith, in love, in patience; Older men are to be sober-minded, dignified, self-controlled, sound in faith, in love, and in steadfastness. Teach the older men to be temperate, worthy of respect, self-controlled, and sound in faith, in love and in endurance.
3 that the elder women in like manner be in deportment as becoming those who have to say to sacred things, not slanderers, not enslaved to much wine, teachers of what is right; Older women likewise are to be reverent in behavior, not slanderers or slaves to much wine. They are to teach what is good, Likewise, teach the older women to be reverent in the way they live, not to be slanderers or addicted to much wine, but to teach what is good.
4 that they may admonish the young women to be attached to [their] husbands, to be attached to [their] children, and so train the young women to love their husbands and children, Then they can urge the younger women to love their husbands and children,
5 discreet, chaste, diligent in home work, good, subject to their own husbands, that the word of God may not be evil spoken of. to be self-controlled, pure, working at home, kind, and submissive to their own husbands, that the word of God may not be reviled. to be self-controlled and pure, to be busy at home, to be kind, and to be subject to their husbands, so that no one will malign the word of God.
6 The younger men in like manner exhort to be discreet: Likewise, urge the younger men to be self-controlled. Similarly, encourage the young men to be self-controlled.
7 in all things affording thyself as a pattern of good works; in teaching uncorruptedness, gravity, Show yourself in all respects to be a model of good works, and in your teaching show integrity, dignity, In everything set them an example by doing what is good. In your teaching show integrity, seriousness
8 a sound word, not to be condemned; that he who is opposed may be ashamed, having no evil thing to say about us: and sound speech that cannot be condemned, so that an opponent may be put to shame, having nothing evil to say about us. and soundness of speech that cannot be condemned, so that those who oppose you may be ashamed because they have nothing bad to say about us.
9 bondmen to be subject to their own masters, to make themselves acceptable in everything; not gainsaying; Bondservants are to be submissive to their own masters in everything; they are to be well-pleasing, not argumentative, Teach slaves to be subject to their masters in everything, to try to please them, not to talk back to them,
10 not robbing [their masters], but shewing all good fidelity, that they may adorn the teaching which [is] of our Saviour God in all things. not pilfering, but showing all good faith, so that in everything they may adorn the doctrine of God our Savior. and not to steal from them, but to show that they can be fully trusted, so that in every way they will make the teaching about God our Savior attractive.
11 For the grace of God which carries with it salvation for all men has appeared, For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people, For the grace of God has appeared that offers salvation to all people.
12 teaching us that, having denied impiety and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, and justly, and piously in the present course of things, training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in the present age, It teaches us to say “No” to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age,
13 awaiting the blessed hope and appearing of the glory of our great God and Saviour Jesus Christ; waiting for our blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, while we wait for the blessed hope—the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ,
