Listen to my prayer, O God. Do not ignore my cry for help! Give ear to my prayer, O God, and hide not yourself from my plea for mercy! For the director of music. With stringed instruments. A maskil of David. Listen to my prayer, O God, do not ignore my plea;
Please listen and answer me, for I am overwhelmed by my troubles. Attend to me, and answer me; I am restless in my complaint and I moan, hear me and answer me. My thoughts trouble me and I am distraught
My enemies shout at me, making loud and wicked threats. They bring trouble on me and angrily hunt me down. because of the noise of the enemy, because of the oppression of the wicked. For they drop trouble upon me, and in anger they bear a grudge against me. because of what my enemy is saying, because of the threats of the wicked; for they bring down suffering on me and assail me in their anger.
My heart pounds in my chest. The terror of death assaults me. My heart is in anguish within me; the terrors of death have fallen upon me. My heart is in anguish within me; the terrors of death have fallen on me.
Fear and trembling overwhelm me, and I can’t stop shaking. Fear and trembling come upon me, and horror overwhelms me. Fear and trembling have beset me; horror has overwhelmed me.
Oh, that I had wings like a dove; then I would fly away and rest! And I say, “Oh, that I had wings like a dove! I would fly away and be at rest; I said, “Oh, that I had the wings of a dove! I would fly away and be at rest.
I would fly far away to the quiet of the wilderness. Interlude yes, I would wander far away; I would lodge in the wilderness; Selah I would flee far away and stay in the desert;
How quickly I would escape— far from this wild storm of hatred. I would hurry to find a shelter from the raging wind and tempest.” I would hurry to my place of shelter, far from the tempest and storm.”
Confuse them, Lord, and frustrate their plans, for I see violence and conflict in the city. Destroy, O Lord, divide their tongues; for I see violence and strife in the city. Lord, confuse the wicked, confound their words, for I see violence and strife in the city.
Its walls are patrolled day and night against invaders, but the real danger is wickedness within the city. Day and night they go around it on its walls, and iniquity and trouble are within it; Day and night they prowl about on its walls; malice and abuse are within it.
Everything is falling apart; threats and cheating are rampant in the streets. ruin is in its midst; oppression and fraud do not depart from its marketplace. Destructive forces are at work in the city; threats and lies never leave its streets.
It is not an enemy who taunts me— I could bear that. It is not my foes who so arrogantly insult me— I could have hidden from them. For it is not an enemy who taunts me— then I could bear it; it is not an adversary who deals insolently with me— then I could hide from him. If an enemy were insulting me, I could endure it; if a foe were rising against me, I could hide.
Instead, it is you—my equal, my companion and close friend. But it is you, a man, my equal, my companion, my familiar friend. But it is you, a man like myself, my companion, my close friend,
What good fellowship we once enjoyed as we walked together to the house of God. We used to take sweet counsel together; within God’s house we walked in the throng. with whom I once enjoyed sweet fellowship at the house of God, as we walked about among the worshipers.
Let death stalk my enemies; let the grave swallow them alive, for evil makes its home within them. Let death steal over them; let them go down to Sheol alive; for evil is in their dwelling place and in their heart. Let death take my enemies by surprise; let them go down alive to the realm of the dead, for evil finds lodging among them.
But I will call on God, and the LORD will rescue me. But I call to God, and the LORD will save me. As for me, I call to God, and the LORD saves me.
Morning, noon, and night I cry out in my distress, and the LORD hears my voice. Evening and morning and at noon I utter my complaint and moan, and he hears my voice. Evening, morning and noon I cry out in distress, and he hears my voice.
He ransoms me and keeps me safe from the battle waged against me, though many still oppose me. He redeems my soul in safety from the battle that I wage, for many are arrayed against me. He rescues me unharmed from the battle waged against me, even though many oppose me.
God, who has ruled forever, will hear me and humble them. Interlude For my enemies refuse to change their ways; they do not fear God. God will give ear and humble them, he who is enthroned from of old, Selah because they do not change and do not fear God. God, who is enthroned from of old, who does not change— he will hear them and humble them, because they have no fear of God.
As for my companion, he betrayed his friends; he broke his promises. My companion stretched out his hand against his friends; he violated his covenant. My companion attacks his friends; he violates his covenant.
His words are as smooth as butter, but in his heart is war. His words are as soothing as lotion, but underneath are daggers! His speech was smooth as butter, yet war was in his heart; his words were softer than oil, yet they were drawn swords. His talk is smooth as butter, yet war is in his heart; his words are more soothing than oil, yet they are drawn swords.
Give your burdens to the LORD, and he will take care of you. He will not permit the godly to slip and fall. Cast your burden on the LORD, and he will sustain you; he will never permit the righteous to be moved. Cast your cares on the LORD and he will sustain you; he will never let the righteous be shaken.
But you, O God, will send the wicked down to the pit of destruction. Murderers and liars will die young, but I am trusting you to save me. But you, O God, will cast them down into the pit of destruction; men of blood and treachery shall not live out half their days. But I will trust in you. But you, God, will bring down the wicked into the pit of decay; the bloodthirsty and deceitful will not live out half their days. But as for me, I trust in you.
