1 For the music director, to be accompanied by stringed instruments; a psalm of David. When I call out, answer me, O God who vindicates me! Though I am hemmed in, you will lead me into a wide, open place. Have mercy on me and respond to my prayer! Answer me when I call, O God of my righteousness! You have given me relief when I was in distress. Be gracious to me and hear my prayer! For the director of music. With stringed instruments. A psalm of David. Answer me when I call to you, my righteous God. Give me relief from my distress; have mercy on me and hear my prayer.
2 You men, how long will you try to turn my honor into shame? How long will you love what is worthless and search for what is deceptive? (Selah) O men, how long shall my honor be turned into shame? How long will you love vain words and seek after lies? Selah How long will you people turn my glory into shame? How long will you love delusions and seek false gods
3 Realize that the LORD shows the godly special favor; the LORD responds when I cry out to him. But know that the LORD has set apart the godly for himself; the LORD hears when I call to him. Know that the LORD has set apart his faithful servant for himself; the LORD hears when I call to him.
4 Tremble with fear and do not sin! Meditate as you lie in bed, and repent of your ways! (Selah) Be angry, and do not sin; ponder in your own hearts on your beds, and be silent. Selah Tremble and do not sin; when you are on your beds, search your hearts and be silent.
5 Offer the prescribed sacrifices and trust in the LORD! Offer right sacrifices, and put your trust in the LORD. Offer the sacrifices of the righteous and trust in the LORD.
6 Many say, |Who can show us anything good?| Smile upon us, LORD! There are many who say, “Who will show us some good? Lift up the light of your face upon us, O LORD!” Many, LORD, are asking, “Who will bring us prosperity?” Let the light of your face shine on us.
7 You make me happier than those who have abundant grain and wine. You have put more joy in my heart than they have when their grain and wine abound. Fill my heart with joy when their grain and new wine abound.
8 I will lie down and sleep peacefully, for you, LORD, make me safe and secure. In peace I will both lie down and sleep; for you alone, O LORD, make me dwell in safety. In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, LORD, make me dwell in safety.
