1 When I call, answer me, my righteous God! When I was in distress, you set me free. Be gracious to me and hear my prayer. Answer me when I call, O God of my righteousness! You have given me relief when I was in distress. Be gracious to me and hear my prayer! For the director of music. With stringed instruments. A psalm of David. Answer me when I call to you, my righteous God. Give me relief from my distress; have mercy on me and hear my prayer.
2 You people, how long will you malign my reputation? How long will you love what is vain and what is false? Interlude O men, how long shall my honor be turned into shame? How long will you love vain words and seek after lies? Selah How long will you people turn my glory into shame? How long will you love delusions and seek false gods
3 But understand this: the LORD has set apart the godly for himself! The LORD will hear me when I cry out to him! But know that the LORD has set apart the godly for himself; the LORD hears when I call to him. Know that the LORD has set apart his faithful servant for himself; the LORD hears when I call to him.
4 Be angry, yet do not sin. Think about this when upon your beds, and be silent. Interlude Be angry, and do not sin; ponder in your own hearts on your beds, and be silent. Selah Tremble and do not sin; when you are on your beds, search your hearts and be silent.
5 Offer sacrifices that are righteous, and put your confidence in the LORD. Offer right sacrifices, and put your trust in the LORD. Offer the sacrifices of the righteous and trust in the LORD.
6 Many are asking, |Who will help us to see better days?| LORD, may the light of your favor shine upon us. There are many who say, “Who will show us some good? Lift up the light of your face upon us, O LORD!” Many, LORD, are asking, “Who will bring us prosperity?” Let the light of your face shine on us.
7 You have given me more joy in my heart than at harvest times, when grain and wine abound. You have put more joy in my heart than they have when their grain and wine abound. Fill my heart with joy when their grain and new wine abound.
8 I will lie down and sleep in peace, for you alone, LORD, enable me to live securely. In peace I will both lie down and sleep; for you alone, O LORD, make me dwell in safety. In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, LORD, make me dwell in safety.
