1 For the Chief Musician; on stringed instruments. A Psalm of David. Answer me when I call, O God of my righteousness; thou hast set me at large when I was in distress: have mercy upon me, and hear my prayer. Answer me when I call, O God of my righteousness! You have given me relief when I was in distress. Be gracious to me and hear my prayer! For the director of music. With stringed instruments. A psalm of David. Answer me when I call to you, my righteous God. Give me relief from my distress; have mercy on me and hear my prayer.
2 O ye sons of men, how long shall my glory be turned into dishonour? how long will ye love vanity, and seek after falsehood? Selah O men, how long shall my honor be turned into shame? How long will you love vain words and seek after lies? Selah How long will you people turn my glory into shame? How long will you love delusions and seek false gods
3 But know that the LORD hath set apart him that is godly for himself: the LORD will hear when I call unto him. But know that the LORD has set apart the godly for himself; the LORD hears when I call to him. Know that the LORD has set apart his faithful servant for himself; the LORD hears when I call to him.
4 Stand in awe, and sin not: commune with your own heart upon your bed, and be still. Selah Be angry, and do not sin; ponder in your own hearts on your beds, and be silent. Selah Tremble and do not sin; when you are on your beds, search your hearts and be silent.
5 Offer the sacrifices of righteousness, and put your trust in the LORD. Offer right sacrifices, and put your trust in the LORD. Offer the sacrifices of the righteous and trust in the LORD.
6 Many there be that say, Who will shew us any good? LORD, lift thou up the light of thy countenance upon us. There are many who say, “Who will show us some good? Lift up the light of your face upon us, O LORD!” Many, LORD, are asking, “Who will bring us prosperity?” Let the light of your face shine on us.
7 Thou hast put gladness in my heart, more than they have when their corn and their wine are increased. You have put more joy in my heart than they have when their grain and wine abound. Fill my heart with joy when their grain and new wine abound.
8 In peace will I both lay me down and sleep: for thou, LORD, alone makest me dwell in safety. In peace I will both lie down and sleep; for you alone, O LORD, make me dwell in safety. In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, LORD, make me dwell in safety.
