1 A Psalm by David, for a memorial. Yahweh, don’t rebuke me in your wrath, neither chasten me in your hot displeasure. O LORD, rebuke me not in your anger, nor discipline me in your wrath! A psalm of David. A petition. LORD, do not rebuke me in your anger or discipline me in your wrath.
2 For your arrows have pierced me, your hand presses hard on me. For your arrows have sunk into me, and your hand has come down on me. Your arrows have pierced me, and your hand has come down on me.
3 There is no soundness in my flesh because of your indignation, neither is there any health in my bones because of my sin. There is no soundness in my flesh because of your indignation; there is no health in my bones because of my sin. Because of your wrath there is no health in my body; there is no soundness in my bones because of my sin.
4 For my iniquities have gone over my head. As a heavy burden, they are too heavy for me. For my iniquities have gone over my head; like a heavy burden, they are too heavy for me. My guilt has overwhelmed me like a burden too heavy to bear.
5 My wounds are loathsome and corrupt because of my foolishness. My wounds stink and fester because of my foolishness, My wounds fester and are loathsome because of my sinful folly.
6 I am in pain and bowed down greatly. I go mourning all day long. I am utterly bowed down and prostrate; all the day I go about mourning. I am bowed down and brought very low; all day long I go about mourning.
7 For my waist is filled with burning. There is no soundness in my flesh. For my sides are filled with burning, and there is no soundness in my flesh. My back is filled with searing pain; there is no health in my body.
8 I am faint and severely bruised. I have groaned by reason of the anguish of my heart. I am feeble and crushed; I groan because of the tumult of my heart. I am feeble and utterly crushed; I groan in anguish of heart.
9 Lord, all my desire is before you. My groaning is not hidden from you. O Lord, all my longing is before you; my sighing is not hidden from you. All my longings lie open before you, Lord; my sighing is not hidden from you.
10 My heart throbs. My strength fails me. As for the light of my eyes, it has also left me. My heart throbs; my strength fails me, and the light of my eyes—it also has gone from me. My heart pounds, my strength fails me; even the light has gone from my eyes.
11 My lovers and my friends stand aloof from my plague. My kinsmen stand far away. My friends and companions stand aloof from my plague, and my nearest kin stand far off. My friends and companions avoid me because of my wounds; my neighbors stay far away.
12 They also who seek after my life lay snares. Those who seek my hurt speak mischievous things, and meditate deceits all day long. Those who seek my life lay their snares; those who seek my hurt speak of ruin and meditate treachery all day long. Those who want to kill me set their traps, those who would harm me talk of my ruin; all day long they scheme and lie.
13 But I, as a deaf man, don’t hear. I am as a mute man who doesn’t open his mouth. But I am like a deaf man; I do not hear, like a mute man who does not open his mouth. I am like the deaf, who cannot hear, like the mute, who cannot speak;
14 Yes, I am as a man who doesn’t hear, in whose mouth are no reproofs. I have become like a man who does not hear, and in whose mouth are no rebukes. I have become like one who does not hear, whose mouth can offer no reply.
15 For I hope in you, Yahweh. You will answer, Lord my God. But for you, O LORD, do I wait; it is you, O Lord my God, who will answer. LORD, I wait for you; you will answer, Lord my God.
16 For I said, “Don’t let them gloat over me, or exalt themselves over me when my foot slips.” For I said, “Only let them not rejoice over me, who boast against me when my foot slips!” For I said, “Do not let them gloat or exalt themselves over me when my feet slip.”
17 For I am ready to fall. My pain is continually before me. For I am ready to fall, and my pain is ever before me. For I am about to fall, and my pain is ever with me.
18 For I will declare my iniquity. I will be sorry for my sin. I confess my iniquity; I am sorry for my sin. I confess my iniquity; I am troubled by my sin.
19 But my enemies are vigorous and many. Those who hate me without reason are numerous. But my foes are vigorous, they are mighty, and many are those who hate me wrongfully. Many have become my enemies without cause; those who hate me without reason are numerous.
20 They who render evil for good are also adversaries to me, because I follow what is good. Those who render me evil for good accuse me because I follow after good. Those who repay my good with evil lodge accusations against me, though I seek only to do what is good.
21 Don’t forsake me, Yahweh. My God, don’t be far from me. Do not forsake me, O LORD! O my God, be not far from me! LORD, do not forsake me; do not be far from me, my God.
22 Hurry to help me, Lord, my salvation. Make haste to help me, O Lord, my salvation! Come quickly to help me, my Lord and my Savior.
