1 A Psalm of David. The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the LORD is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid? The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The LORD is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid? Of David. The LORD is my light and my salvation— whom shall I fear? The LORD is the stronghold of my life— of whom shall I be afraid?
2 When evil-doers came upon me to eat up my flesh, even mine adversaries and my foes, they stumbled and fell. When evildoers assail me to eat up my flesh, my adversaries and foes, it is they who stumble and fall. When the wicked advance against me to devour me, it is my enemies and my foes who will stumble and fall.
3 Though an host should encamp against me, my heart shall not fear: though war should rise against me, even then will I be confident. Though an army encamp against me, my heart shall not fear; though war arise against me, yet I will be confident. Though an army besiege me, my heart will not fear; though war break out against me, even then I will be confident.
4 One thing have I asked of the LORD, that will I seek after; that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the LORD, and to inquire in his temple. One thing have I asked of the LORD, that will I seek after: that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty of the LORD and to inquire in his temple. One thing I ask from the LORD, this only do I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to gaze on the beauty of the LORD and to seek him in his temple.
5 For in the day of trouble he shall keep me secretly in his pavilion: in the covert of his tabernacle shall he hide me; he shall lift me up upon a rock. For he will hide me in his shelter in the day of trouble; he will conceal me under the cover of his tent; he will lift me high upon a rock. For in the day of trouble he will keep me safe in his dwelling; he will hide me in the shelter of his sacred tent and set me high upon a rock.
6 And now shall mine head be lifted up above mine enemies round about me; and I will offer in his tabernacle sacrifices of joy; I will sing, yea, I will sing praises unto the LORD. And now my head shall be lifted up above my enemies all around me, and I will offer in his tent sacrifices with shouts of joy; I will sing and make melody to the LORD. Then my head will be exalted above the enemies who surround me; at his sacred tent I will sacrifice with shouts of joy; I will sing and make music to the LORD.
7 Hear, O LORD, when I cry with my voice: have mercy also upon me, and answer me. Hear, O LORD, when I cry aloud; be gracious to me and answer me! Hear my voice when I call, LORD; be merciful to me and answer me.
8 When thou saidst, Seek ye my face; my heart said unto thee, Thy face, LORD, will I seek. You have said, “Seek my face.” My heart says to you, “Your face, LORD, do I seek.” My heart says of you, “Seek his face!” Your face, LORD, I will seek.
9 Hide not thy face from me; put not thy servant away in anger: thou hast been my help; cast me not off, neither forsake me, O God of my salvation. Hide not your face from me. Turn not your servant away in anger, O you who have been my help. Cast me not off; forsake me not, O God of my salvation! Do not hide your face from me, do not turn your servant away in anger; you have been my helper. Do not reject me or forsake me, God my Savior.
10 For my father and my mother have forsaken me, but the LORD will take me up. For my father and my mother have forsaken me, but the LORD will take me in. Though my father and mother forsake me, the LORD will receive me.
11 Teach me thy way, O LORD; and lead me in a plain path, because of mine enemies. Teach me your way, O LORD, and lead me on a level path because of my enemies. Teach me your way, LORD; lead me in a straight path because of my oppressors.
12 Deliver me not over unto the will of mine adversaries: for false witnesses are risen up against me, and such as breathe out cruelty. Give me not up to the will of my adversaries; for false witnesses have risen against me, and they breathe out violence. Do not turn me over to the desire of my foes, for false witnesses rise up against me, spouting malicious accusations.
13 I had fainted, unless I had believed to see the goodness of the LORD in the land of the living. I believe that I shall look upon the goodness of the LORD in the land of the living! I remain confident of this: I will see the goodness of the LORD in the land of the living.
14 Wait on the LORD: be strong, and let thine heart take courage; yea, wait thou on the LORD. Wait for the LORD; be strong, and let your heart take courage; wait for the LORD! Wait for the LORD; be strong and take heart and wait for the LORD.
