1 A Psalm of David. The LORD is my light and my salvation— Whom shall I fear? The LORD is the refuge and fortress of my life— Whom shall I dread? The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The LORD is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid? Of David. The LORD is my light and my salvation— whom shall I fear? The LORD is the stronghold of my life— of whom shall I be afraid?
2 When the wicked came against me to eat up my flesh, My adversaries and my enemies, they stumbled and fell. When evildoers assail me to eat up my flesh, my adversaries and foes, it is they who stumble and fall. When the wicked advance against me to devour me, it is my enemies and my foes who will stumble and fall.
3 Though an army encamp against me, My heart will not fear; Though war arise against me, Even in this I am confident. Though an army encamp against me, my heart shall not fear; though war arise against me, yet I will be confident. Though an army besiege me, my heart will not fear; though war break out against me, even then I will be confident.
4 One thing I have asked of the LORD, and that I will seek: That I may dwell in the house of the LORD [in His presence] all the days of my life, To gaze upon the beauty [the delightful loveliness and majestic grandeur] of the LORD And to meditate in His temple. One thing have I asked of the LORD, that will I seek after: that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty of the LORD and to inquire in his temple. One thing I ask from the LORD, this only do I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to gaze on the beauty of the LORD and to seek him in his temple.
5 For in the day of trouble He will hide me in His shelter; In the secret place of His tent He will hide me; He will lift me up on a rock. For he will hide me in his shelter in the day of trouble; he will conceal me under the cover of his tent; he will lift me high upon a rock. For in the day of trouble he will keep me safe in his dwelling; he will hide me in the shelter of his sacred tent and set me high upon a rock.
6 And now my head will be lifted up above my enemies around me, In His tent I will offer sacrifices with shouts of joy; I will sing, yes, I will sing praises to the LORD. And now my head shall be lifted up above my enemies all around me, and I will offer in his tent sacrifices with shouts of joy; I will sing and make melody to the LORD. Then my head will be exalted above the enemies who surround me; at his sacred tent I will sacrifice with shouts of joy; I will sing and make music to the LORD.
7 Hear, O LORD, when I cry aloud; Be gracious and compassionate to me and answer me. Hear, O LORD, when I cry aloud; be gracious to me and answer me! Hear my voice when I call, LORD; be merciful to me and answer me.
8 When You said, “Seek My face [in prayer, require My presence as your greatest need],” my heart said to You, “Your face, O LORD, I will seek [on the authority of Your word].” You have said, “Seek my face.” My heart says to you, “Your face, LORD, do I seek.” My heart says of you, “Seek his face!” Your face, LORD, I will seek.
9 Do not hide Your face from me, Do not turn Your servant away in anger; You have been my help; Do not abandon me nor leave me, O God of my salvation! Hide not your face from me. Turn not your servant away in anger, O you who have been my help. Cast me not off; forsake me not, O God of my salvation! Do not hide your face from me, do not turn your servant away in anger; you have been my helper. Do not reject me or forsake me, God my Savior.
10 Although my father and my mother have abandoned me, Yet the LORD will take me up [adopt me as His child]. For my father and my mother have forsaken me, but the LORD will take me in. Though my father and mother forsake me, the LORD will receive me.
11 Teach me Your way, O LORD, And lead me on a level path Because of my enemies [who lie in wait]. Teach me your way, O LORD, and lead me on a level path because of my enemies. Teach me your way, LORD; lead me in a straight path because of my oppressors.
12 Do not give me up to the will of my adversaries, For false witnesses have come against me; They breathe out violence. Give me not up to the will of my adversaries; for false witnesses have risen against me, and they breathe out violence. Do not turn me over to the desire of my foes, for false witnesses rise up against me, spouting malicious accusations.
13 I would have despaired had I not believed that I would see the goodness of the LORD In the land of the living. I believe that I shall look upon the goodness of the LORD in the land of the living! I remain confident of this: I will see the goodness of the LORD in the land of the living.
14 Wait for and confidently expect the LORD; Be strong and let your heart take courage; Yes, wait for and confidently expect the LORD. Wait for the LORD; be strong, and let your heart take courage; wait for the LORD! Wait for the LORD; be strong and take heart and wait for the LORD.
