1 Why do you stand far off, Yahweh? Why do you hide yourself in times of trouble? Why, O LORD, do you stand far away? Why do you hide yourself in times of trouble? Why, LORD, do you stand far off? Why do you hide yourself in times of trouble?
2 In arrogance, the wicked hunt down the weak. They are caught in the schemes that they devise. In arrogance the wicked hotly pursue the poor; let them be caught in the schemes that they have devised. In his arrogance the wicked man hunts down the weak, who are caught in the schemes he devises.
3 For the wicked boasts of his heart’s cravings. He blesses the greedy and condemns Yahweh. For the wicked boasts of the desires of his soul, and the one greedy for gain curses and renounces the LORD. He boasts about the cravings of his heart; he blesses the greedy and reviles the LORD.
4 The wicked, in the pride of his face, has no room in his thoughts for God. In the pride of his face the wicked does not seek him; all his thoughts are, “There is no God.” In his pride the wicked man does not seek him; in all his thoughts there is no room for God.
5 His ways are prosperous at all times. He is arrogant, and your laws are far from his sight. As for all his adversaries, he sneers at them. His ways prosper at all times; your judgments are on high, out of his sight; as for all his foes, he puffs at them. His ways are always prosperous; your laws are rejected by him; he sneers at all his enemies.
6 He says in his heart, “I shall not be shaken. For generations I shall have no trouble.” He says in his heart, “I shall not be moved; throughout all generations I shall not meet adversity.” He says to himself, “Nothing will ever shake me.” He swears, “No one will ever do me harm.”
7 His mouth is full of cursing, deceit, and oppression. Under his tongue is mischief and iniquity. His mouth is filled with cursing and deceit and oppression; under his tongue are mischief and iniquity. His mouth is full of lies and threats; trouble and evil are under his tongue.
8 He lies in wait near the villages. From ambushes, he murders the innocent. His eyes are secretly set against the helpless. He sits in ambush in the villages; in hiding places he murders the innocent. His eyes stealthily watch for the helpless; He lies in wait near the villages; from ambush he murders the innocent. His eyes watch in secret for his victims;
9 He lurks in secret as a lion in his ambush. He lies in wait to catch the helpless. He catches the helpless when he draws him in his net. he lurks in ambush like a lion in his thicket; he lurks that he may seize the poor; he seizes the poor when he draws him into his net. like a lion in cover he lies in wait. He lies in wait to catch the helpless; he catches the helpless and drags them off in his net.
10 The helpless are crushed. They collapse. They fall under his strength. The helpless are crushed, sink down, and fall by his might. His victims are crushed, they collapse; they fall under his strength.
11 He says in his heart, “God has forgotten. He hides his face. He will never see it.” He says in his heart, “God has forgotten, he has hidden his face, he will never see it.” He says to himself, “God will never notice; he covers his face and never sees.”
12 Arise, Yahweh! God, lift up your hand! Don’t forget the helpless. Arise, O LORD; O God, lift up your hand; forget not the afflicted. Arise, LORD! Lift up your hand, O God. Do not forget the helpless.
13 Why does the wicked person condemn God, and say in his heart, “God won’t call me into account?” Why does the wicked renounce God and say in his heart, “You will not call to account”? Why does the wicked man revile God? Why does he say to himself, “He won’t call me to account|?
14 But you do see trouble and grief. You consider it to take it into your hand. You help the victim and the fatherless. But you do see, for you note mischief and vexation, that you may take it into your hands; to you the helpless commits himself; you have been the helper of the fatherless. But you, God, see the trouble of the afflicted; you consider their grief and take it in hand. The victims commit themselves to you; you are the helper of the fatherless.
15 Break the arm of the wicked. As for the evil man, seek out his wickedness until you find none. Break the arm of the wicked and evildoer; call his wickedness to account till you find none. Break the arm of the wicked man; call the evildoer to account for his wickedness that would not otherwise be found out.
16 Yahweh is King forever and ever! The nations will perish out of his land. The LORD is king forever and ever; the nations perish from his land. The LORD is King for ever and ever; the nations will perish from his land.
17 Yahweh, you have heard the desire of the humble. You will prepare their heart. You will cause your ear to hear, O LORD, you hear the desire of the afflicted; you will strengthen their heart; you will incline your ear You, LORD, hear the desire of the afflicted; you encourage them, and you listen to their cry,
18 to judge the fatherless and the oppressed, that man who is of the earth may terrify no more. to do justice to the fatherless and the oppressed, so that man who is of the earth may strike terror no more. defending the fatherless and the oppressed, so that mere earthly mortals will never again strike terror.
