1 Why standest Thou afar off, O LORD? Why hidest Thou Thyself in times of trouble? Why, O LORD, do you stand far away? Why do you hide yourself in times of trouble? Why, LORD, do you stand far off? Why do you hide yourself in times of trouble?
2 Through the pride of the wicked the poor is hotly pursued, They are taken in the devices that they have imagined. In arrogance the wicked hotly pursue the poor; let them be caught in the schemes that they have devised. In his arrogance the wicked man hunts down the weak, who are caught in the schemes he devises.
3 For the wicked boasteth of his heart's desire, And the covetous vaunteth himself, though he contemn the LORD. For the wicked boasts of the desires of his soul, and the one greedy for gain curses and renounces the LORD. He boasts about the cravings of his heart; he blesses the greedy and reviles the LORD.
4 The wicked, in the pride of his countenance [, saith]: 'He will not require'; All his thoughts are: 'There is no God.' In the pride of his face the wicked does not seek him; all his thoughts are, “There is no God.” In his pride the wicked man does not seek him; in all his thoughts there is no room for God.
5 His ways prosper at all times; Thy judgments are far above out of his sight; As for all his adversaries, he puffeth at them. His ways prosper at all times; your judgments are on high, out of his sight; as for all his foes, he puffs at them. His ways are always prosperous; your laws are rejected by him; he sneers at all his enemies.
6 He saith in his heart: 'I shall not be moved, I who to all generations shall not be in adversity.' He says in his heart, “I shall not be moved; throughout all generations I shall not meet adversity.” He says to himself, “Nothing will ever shake me.” He swears, “No one will ever do me harm.”
7 His mouth is full of cursing and deceit and oppression; Under his tongue is mischief and iniquity. His mouth is filled with cursing and deceit and oppression; under his tongue are mischief and iniquity. His mouth is full of lies and threats; trouble and evil are under his tongue.
8 He sitteth in the lurking-places of the villages; In secret places doth he slay the innocent; His eyes are on the watch for the helpless. He sits in ambush in the villages; in hiding places he murders the innocent. His eyes stealthily watch for the helpless; He lies in wait near the villages; from ambush he murders the innocent. His eyes watch in secret for his victims;
9 He lieth in wait in a secret place as a lion in his lair, He lieth in wait to catch the poor; He doth catch the poor, when he draweth him up in his net. he lurks in ambush like a lion in his thicket; he lurks that he may seize the poor; he seizes the poor when he draws him into his net. like a lion in cover he lies in wait. He lies in wait to catch the helpless; he catches the helpless and drags them off in his net.
10 He croucheth, he boweth down, And the helpless fall into his mighty claws. The helpless are crushed, sink down, and fall by his might. His victims are crushed, they collapse; they fall under his strength.
11 He hath said in his heart: 'God hath forgotten; He hideth His face; He will never see.' He says in his heart, “God has forgotten, he has hidden his face, he will never see it.” He says to himself, “God will never notice; he covers his face and never sees.”
12 Arise, O LORD; O God, lift up Thy hand; Forget not the humble. Arise, O LORD; O God, lift up your hand; forget not the afflicted. Arise, LORD! Lift up your hand, O God. Do not forget the helpless.
13 Wherefore doth the wicked contemn God, And say in his heart: 'Thou wilt not require'? Why does the wicked renounce God and say in his heart, “You will not call to account”? Why does the wicked man revile God? Why does he say to himself, “He won’t call me to account|?
14 Thou hast seen; for Thou beholdest trouble and vexation, to requite them with Thy hand; Unto Thee the helpless committeth himself; Thou hast been the helper of the fatherless. But you do see, for you note mischief and vexation, that you may take it into your hands; to you the helpless commits himself; you have been the helper of the fatherless. But you, God, see the trouble of the afflicted; you consider their grief and take it in hand. The victims commit themselves to you; you are the helper of the fatherless.
15 Break Thou the arm of the wicked; And as for the evil man, search out his wickedness, till none be found. Break the arm of the wicked and evildoer; call his wickedness to account till you find none. Break the arm of the wicked man; call the evildoer to account for his wickedness that would not otherwise be found out.
16 The LORD is King for ever and ever; The nations are perished out of His land. The LORD is king forever and ever; the nations perish from his land. The LORD is King for ever and ever; the nations will perish from his land.
17 LORD, Thou hast heard the desire of the humble: Thou wilt direct their heart, Thou wilt cause Thine ear to attend; O LORD, you hear the desire of the afflicted; you will strengthen their heart; you will incline your ear You, LORD, hear the desire of the afflicted; you encourage them, and you listen to their cry,
18 To right the fatherless and the oppressed, That man who is of the earth may be terrible no more. to do justice to the fatherless and the oppressed, so that man who is of the earth may strike terror no more. defending the fatherless and the oppressed, so that mere earthly mortals will never again strike terror.
