1 LORD, why do You stand so far away? Why do You hide in times of trouble? Why, O LORD, do you stand far away? Why do you hide yourself in times of trouble? Why, LORD, do you stand far off? Why do you hide yourself in times of trouble?
2 In arrogance the wicked relentlessly pursue the afflicted; let them be caught in the schemes they have devised. In arrogance the wicked hotly pursue the poor; let them be caught in the schemes that they have devised. In his arrogance the wicked man hunts down the weak, who are caught in the schemes he devises.
3 For the wicked one boasts about his own cravings; the one who is greedy curses and despises the LORD. For the wicked boasts of the desires of his soul, and the one greedy for gain curses and renounces the LORD. He boasts about the cravings of his heart; he blesses the greedy and reviles the LORD.
4 In all his scheming, the wicked arrogantly thinks:” There is no accountability, since God does not exist.” In the pride of his face the wicked does not seek him; all his thoughts are, “There is no God.” In his pride the wicked man does not seek him; in all his thoughts there is no room for God.
5 His ways are always secure; Your lofty judgments are beyond his sight; he scoffs at all his adversaries. His ways prosper at all times; your judgments are on high, out of his sight; as for all his foes, he puffs at them. His ways are always prosperous; your laws are rejected by him; he sneers at all his enemies.
6 He says to himself, “I will never be moved— from generation to generation without calamity.” He says in his heart, “I shall not be moved; throughout all generations I shall not meet adversity.” He says to himself, “Nothing will ever shake me.” He swears, “No one will ever do me harm.”
7 Cursing, deceit, and violence fill his mouth; trouble and malice are under his tongue. His mouth is filled with cursing and deceit and oppression; under his tongue are mischief and iniquity. His mouth is full of lies and threats; trouble and evil are under his tongue.
8 He waits in ambush near the villages; he kills the innocent in secret places. His eyes are on the lookout for the helpless; He sits in ambush in the villages; in hiding places he murders the innocent. His eyes stealthily watch for the helpless; He lies in wait near the villages; from ambush he murders the innocent. His eyes watch in secret for his victims;
9 he lurks in secret like a lion in a thicket. He lurks in order to seize the afflicted; he seizes the afflicted and drags him in his net. he lurks in ambush like a lion in his thicket; he lurks that he may seize the poor; he seizes the poor when he draws him into his net. like a lion in cover he lies in wait. He lies in wait to catch the helpless; he catches the helpless and drags them off in his net.
10 So he is oppressed and beaten down; the helpless fall because of his strength. The helpless are crushed, sink down, and fall by his might. His victims are crushed, they collapse; they fall under his strength.
11 He says to himself, “God has forgotten; He hides His face and will never see.” He says in his heart, “God has forgotten, he has hidden his face, he will never see it.” He says to himself, “God will never notice; he covers his face and never sees.”
12 Rise up, LORD God! Lift up Your hand. Do not forget the afflicted. Arise, O LORD; O God, lift up your hand; forget not the afflicted. Arise, LORD! Lift up your hand, O God. Do not forget the helpless.
13 Why has the wicked person despised God? He says to himself, “You will not demand an account.” Why does the wicked renounce God and say in his heart, “You will not call to account”? Why does the wicked man revile God? Why does he say to himself, “He won’t call me to account|?
14 But You Yourself have seen trouble and grief, observing it in order to take the matter into Your hands. The helpless entrusts himself to You; You are a helper of the fatherless. But you do see, for you note mischief and vexation, that you may take it into your hands; to you the helpless commits himself; you have been the helper of the fatherless. But you, God, see the trouble of the afflicted; you consider their grief and take it in hand. The victims commit themselves to you; you are the helper of the fatherless.
15 Break the arm of the wicked and evil person; call his wickedness into account until nothing remains of it. Break the arm of the wicked and evildoer; call his wickedness to account till you find none. Break the arm of the wicked man; call the evildoer to account for his wickedness that would not otherwise be found out.
16 The LORD is King forever and ever; the nations will perish from His land. The LORD is king forever and ever; the nations perish from his land. The LORD is King for ever and ever; the nations will perish from his land.
17 LORD, You have heard the desire of the humble; You will strengthen their hearts. You will listen carefully, O LORD, you hear the desire of the afflicted; you will strengthen their heart; you will incline your ear You, LORD, hear the desire of the afflicted; you encourage them, and you listen to their cry,
18 doing justice for the fatherless and the oppressed so that men of the earth may terrify them no more. to do justice to the fatherless and the oppressed, so that man who is of the earth may strike terror no more. defending the fatherless and the oppressed, so that mere earthly mortals will never again strike terror.
