1 My son, pay attention to my wisdom; incline your ear to my insight, My son, be attentive to my wisdom; incline your ear to my understanding, My son, attend unto my wisdom, and bow thine ear to my understanding: My son, pay attention to my wisdom, turn your ear to my words of insight, My son, pay attention to my wisdom; listen carefully to my wise counsel.
2 that you may maintain discretion and your lips may preserve knowledge. that you may keep discretion, and your lips may guard knowledge. That thou mayest regard discretion, and that thy lips may keep knowledge. that you may maintain discretion and your lips may preserve knowledge. Then you will show discernment, and your lips will express what you’ve learned.
3 Though the lips of the forbidden woman drip honey and her speech is smoother than oil, For the lips of a forbidden woman drip honey, and her speech is smoother than oil, For the lips of a strange woman drop as an honeycomb, and her mouth is smoother than oil: For the lips of the adulterous woman drip honey, and her speech is smoother than oil; For the lips of an immoral woman are as sweet as honey, and her mouth is smoother than oil.
4 in the end she is bitter as wormwood, sharp as a double-edged sword. but in the end she is bitter as wormwood, sharp as a two-edged sword. But her end is bitter as wormwood, sharp as a twoedged sword. but in the end she is bitter as gall, sharp as a double-edged sword. But in the end she is as bitter as poison, as dangerous as a double-edged sword.
5 Her feet go down to death; her steps lead straight to Sheol. Her feet go down to death; her steps follow the path to Sheol; Her feet go down to death; her steps take hold on hell. Her feet go down to death; her steps lead straight to the grave. Her feet go down to death; her steps lead straight to the grave.
6 She does not consider the path of life; she does not know that her ways are unstable. she does not ponder the path of life; her ways wander, and she does not know it. Lest thou shouldest ponder the path of life, her ways are moveable, that thou canst not know them. She gives no thought to the way of life; her paths wander aimlessly, but she does not know it. For she cares nothing about the path to life. She staggers down a crooked trail and doesn’t realize it.
7 So now, my sons, listen to me, and do not turn aside from the words of my mouth. And now, O sons, listen to me, and do not depart from the words of my mouth. Hear me now therefore, O ye children, and depart not from the words of my mouth. Now then, my sons, listen to me; do not turn aside from what I say. So now, my sons, listen to me. Never stray from what I am about to say:
8 Keep your path far from her; do not go near the door of her house, Keep your way far from her, and do not go near the door of her house, Remove thy way far from her, and come not nigh the door of her house: Keep to a path far from her, do not go near the door of her house, Stay away from her! Don’t go near the door of her house!
9 lest you concede your vigor to others, and your years to one who is cruel; lest you give your honor to others and your years to the merciless, Lest thou give thine honour unto others, and thy years unto the cruel: lest you lose your honor to others and your dignity to one who is cruel, If you do, you will lose your honor and will lose to merciless people all you have achieved.
10 lest strangers feast on your wealth, and your labors enrich the house of a foreigner. lest strangers take their fill of your strength, and your labors go to the house of a foreigner, Lest strangers be filled with thy wealth; and thy labours be in the house of a stranger; lest strangers feast on your wealth and your toil enrich the house of another. Strangers will consume your wealth, and someone else will enjoy the fruit of your labor.
11 At the end of your life you will groan when your flesh and your body are spent, and at the end of your life you groan, when your flesh and body are consumed, And thou mourn at the last, when thy flesh and thy body are consumed, At the end of your life you will groan, when your flesh and body are spent. In the end you will groan in anguish when disease consumes your body.
12 and you will say, “How I hated discipline, and my heart despised reproof! and you say, “How I hated discipline, and my heart despised reproof! And say, How have I hated instruction, and my heart despised reproof; You will say, “How I hated discipline! How my heart spurned correction! You will say, “How I hated discipline! If only I had not ignored all the warnings!
13 I did not listen to the voice of my teachers or incline my ear to my mentors. I did not listen to the voice of my teachers or incline my ear to my instructors. And have not obeyed the voice of my teachers, nor inclined mine ear to them that instructed me! I would not obey my teachers or turn my ear to my instructors. Oh, why didn’t I listen to my teachers? Why didn’t I pay attention to my instructors?
14 I am on the brink of utter ruin in the midst of the whole assembly.” I am at the brink of utter ruin in the assembled congregation.” I was almost in all evil in the midst of the congregation and assembly. And I was soon in serious trouble in the assembly of God’s people.” I have come to the brink of utter ruin, and now I must face public disgrace.”
15 Drink water from your own cistern, and running water from your own well. Drink water from your own cistern, flowing water from your own well. Drink waters out of thine own cistern, and running waters out of thine own well. Drink water from your own cistern, running water from your own well. Drink water from your own well— share your love only with your wife.
16 Why should your springs flow in the streets, your streams of water in the public squares? Should your springs be scattered abroad, streams of water in the streets? Let thy fountains be dispersed abroad, and rivers of waters in the streets. Should your springs overflow in the streets, your streams of water in the public squares? Why spill the water of your springs in the streets, having sex with just anyone?
17 Let them be yours alone, never to be shared with strangers. Let them be for yourself alone, and not for strangers with you. Let them be only thine own, and not strangers' with thee. Let them be yours alone, never to be shared with strangers. You should reserve it for yourselves. Never share it with strangers.
18 May your fountain be blessed, and may you rejoice in the wife of your youth: Let your fountain be blessed, and rejoice in the wife of your youth, Let thy fountain be blessed: and rejoice with the wife of thy youth. May your fountain be blessed, and may you rejoice in the wife of your youth. Let your wife be a fountain of blessing for you. Rejoice in the wife of your youth.
19 A loving doe, a graceful fawn—may her breasts satisfy you always; may you be captivated by her love forever. a lovely deer, a graceful doe. Let her breasts fill you at all times with delight; be intoxicated always in her love. Let her be as the loving hind and pleasant roe; let her breasts satisfy thee at all times; and be thou ravished always with her love. A loving doe, a graceful deer— may her breasts satisfy you always, may you ever be intoxicated with her love. She is a loving deer, a graceful doe. Let her breasts satisfy you always. May you always be captivated by her love.
20 Why be captivated, my son, by an adulteress, or embrace the bosom of a stranger? Why should you be intoxicated, my son, with a forbidden woman and embrace the bosom of an adulteress? And why wilt thou, my son, be ravished with a strange woman, and embrace the bosom of a stranger? Why, my son, be intoxicated with another man’s wife? Why embrace the bosom of a wayward woman? Why be captivated, my son, by an immoral woman, or fondle the breasts of a promiscuous woman?
21 For a man’s ways are before the eyes of the LORD, and the LORD examines all his paths. For a man’s ways are before the eyes of the LORD, and he ponders all his paths. For the ways of man are before the eyes of the LORD, and he pondereth all his goings. For your ways are in full view of the LORD, and he examines all your paths. For the LORD sees clearly what a man does, examining every path he takes.
22 The iniquities of a wicked man entrap him; the cords of his sin entangle him. The iniquities of the wicked ensnare him, and he is held fast in the cords of his sin. His own iniquities shall take the wicked himself, and he shall be holden with the cords of his sins. The evil deeds of the wicked ensnare them; the cords of their sins hold them fast. An evil man is held captive by his own sins; they are ropes that catch and hold him.
23 He dies for lack of discipline, led astray by his own great folly. He dies for lack of discipline, and because of his great folly he is led astray. He shall die without instruction; and in the greatness of his folly he shall go astray. For lack of discipline they will die, led astray by their own great folly. He will die for lack of self-control; he will be lost because of his great foolishness.
