1 A false balance and dishonest business practices are extremely offensive to the LORD, But an accurate scale is His delight. A false balance is an abomination to the LORD, but a just weight is his delight. The LORD detests dishonest scales, but accurate weights find favor with him.
2 When pride comes [boiling up with an arrogant attitude of self-importance], then come dishonor and shame, But with the humble [the teachable who have been chiseled by trial and who have learned to walk humbly with God] there is wisdom and soundness of mind. When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with the humble is wisdom. When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with humility comes wisdom.
3 The integrity and moral courage of the upright will guide them, But the crookedness of the treacherous will destroy them. The integrity of the upright guides them, but the crookedness of the treacherous destroys them. The integrity of the upright guides them, but the unfaithful are destroyed by their duplicity.
4 Riches will not provide security in the day of wrath and judgment, But righteousness rescues from death. Riches do not profit in the day of wrath, but righteousness delivers from death. Wealth is worthless in the day of wrath, but righteousness delivers from death.
5 The righteousness of the blameless will smooth their way and keep it straight, But the wicked will fall by his own wickedness. The righteousness of the blameless keeps his way straight, but the wicked falls by his own wickedness. 6 The righteousness of the upright will rescue them, But the treacherous will be caught by their own greed. 7 When the wicked man dies, his expectation will perish; And the hope of [godless] strong men perishes. When the wicked dies, his hope will perish, and the expectation of wealth perishes too. Hopes placed in mortals die with them; all the promise of their power comes to nothing.
8 The righteous is rescued from trouble, And the wicked takes his place. The righteous is delivered from trouble, and the wicked walks into it instead. The righteous person is rescued from trouble, and it falls on the wicked instead.
9 With his mouth the godless man destroys his neighbor, But through knowledge and discernment the righteous will be rescued. With his mouth the godless man would destroy his neighbor, but by knowledge the righteous are delivered. With their mouths the godless destroy their neighbors, but through knowledge the righteous escape.
10 When it goes well for the righteous, the city rejoices, And when the wicked perish, there are shouts of joy. When it goes well with the righteous, the city rejoices, and when the wicked perish there are shouts of gladness. When the righteous prosper, the city rejoices; when the wicked perish, there are shouts of joy.
11 By the blessing [of the influence] of the upright the city is exalted, But by the mouth of the wicked it is torn down. By the blessing of the upright a city is exalted, but by the mouth of the wicked it is overthrown. Through the blessing of the upright a city is exalted, but by the mouth of the wicked it is destroyed.
12 He who despises his neighbor lacks sense, But a man of understanding keeps silent. Whoever belittles his neighbor lacks sense, but a man of understanding remains silent. Whoever derides their neighbor has no sense, but the one who has understanding holds their tongue.
13 He who goes about as a gossip reveals secrets, But he who is trustworthy and faithful keeps a matter hidden. Whoever goes about slandering reveals secrets, but he who is trustworthy in spirit keeps a thing covered. A gossip betrays a confidence, but a trustworthy person keeps a secret.
14 Where there is no [wise, intelligent] guidance, the people fall [and go off course like a ship without a helm], But in the abundance of [wise and godly] counselors there is victory. Where there is no guidance, a people falls, but in an abundance of counselors there is safety. For lack of guidance a nation falls, but victory is won through many advisers.
15 He who puts up security and guarantees a debt for an outsider will surely suffer [for his foolishness], But he who hates (declines) being a guarantor is secure [from its penalties]. Whoever puts up security for a stranger will surely suffer harm, but he who hates striking hands in pledge is secure. Whoever puts up security for a stranger will surely suffer, but whoever refuses to shake hands in pledge is safe.
16 A gracious and good woman attains honor, And ruthless men attain riches [but not respect]. A gracious woman gets honor, and violent men get riches. A kindhearted woman gains honor, but ruthless men gain only wealth.
17 The merciful and generous man benefits his soul [for his behavior returns to bless him], But the cruel and callous man does himself harm. A man who is kind benefits himself, but a cruel man hurts himself. Those who are kind benefit themselves, but the cruel bring ruin on themselves.
18 The wicked man earns deceptive wages, But he who sows righteousness and lives his life with integrity will have a true reward [that is both permanent and satisfying]. The wicked earns deceptive wages, but one who sows righteousness gets a sure reward. A wicked person earns deceptive wages, but the one who sows righteousness reaps a sure reward.
19 He who is steadfast in righteousness attains life, But he who pursues evil attains his own death. Whoever is steadfast in righteousness will live, but he who pursues evil will die. Truly the righteous attain life, but whoever pursues evil finds death.
20 The perverse in heart are repulsive and shamefully vile to the LORD, But those who are blameless and above reproach in their walk are His delight! Those of crooked heart are an abomination to the LORD, but those of blameless ways are his delight. The LORD detests those whose hearts are perverse, but he delights in those whose ways are blameless.
21 Assuredly, the evil man will not go unpunished, But the descendants of the righteous will be freed. Be assured, an evil person will not go unpunished, but the offspring of the righteous will be delivered. Be sure of this: The wicked will not go unpunished, but those who are righteous will go free.
22 As a ring of gold in a swine’s snout, So is a beautiful woman who is without discretion [her lack of character mocks her beauty]. Like a gold ring in a pig’s snout is a beautiful woman without discretion. Like a gold ring in a pig’s snout is a beautiful woman who shows no discretion.
23 The desire of the righteous brings only good, But the expectation of the wicked brings wrath. The desire of the righteous ends only in good, the expectation of the wicked in wrath. The desire of the righteous ends only in good, but the hope of the wicked only in wrath.
24 There is the one who [generously] scatters [abroad], and yet increases all the more; And there is the one who withholds what is justly due, but it results only in want and poverty. One gives freely, yet grows all the richer; another withholds what he should give, and only suffers want. One person gives freely, yet gains even more; another withholds unduly, but comes to poverty.
25 The generous man [is a source of blessing and] shall be prosperous and enriched, And he who waters will himself be watered [reaping the generosity he has sown]. Whoever brings blessing will be enriched, and one who waters will himself be watered. A generous person will prosper; whoever refreshes others will be refreshed.
26 The people curse him who holds back grain [when the public needs it], But a blessing [from God and man] is upon the head of him who sells it. The people curse him who holds back grain, but a blessing is on the head of him who sells it. People curse the one who hoards grain, but they pray God’s blessing on the one who is willing to sell.
27 He who diligently seeks good seeks favor and grace, But he who seeks evil, evil will come to him. Whoever diligently seeks good seeks favor, but evil comes to him who searches for it. Whoever seeks good finds favor, but evil comes to one who searches for it.
28 He who leans on and trusts in and is confident in his riches will fall, But the righteous [who trust in God’s provision] will flourish like a green leaf. Whoever trusts in his riches will fall, but the righteous will flourish like a green leaf. Those who trust in their riches will fall, but the righteous will thrive like a green leaf.
29 He who troubles (mismanages) his own house will inherit the wind (nothing), And the foolish will be a servant to the wise-hearted. Whoever troubles his own household will inherit the wind, and the fool will be servant to the wise of heart. Whoever brings ruin on their family will inherit only wind, and the fool will be servant to the wise.
30 The fruit of the [consistently] righteous is a tree of life, And he who is wise captures and wins souls [for God—he gathers them for eternity]. The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life, and whoever captures souls is wise. The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life, and the one who is wise saves lives.
31 If the righteous will be rewarded on the earth [with godly blessings], How much more [will] the wicked and the sinner [be repaid with punishment]! If the righteous is repaid on earth, how much more the wicked and the sinner! If the righteous receive their due on earth, how much more the ungodly and the sinner!
