These are the generations of Aaron and Moses, in the day when the Lord spoke to Moses on mount Sinai. | These are the generations of Aaron and Moses at the time when the LORD spoke with Moses on Mount Sinai. | This is the account of the family of Aaron and Moses at the time the LORD spoke to Moses at Mount Sinai. |
And these are the names of the sons of Aaron: his firstborn Nadab, then Abihu, and Eleazar, and Ithamar. | These are the names of the sons of Aaron: Nadab the firstborn, and Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar. | The names of the sons of Aaron were Nadab the firstborn and Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar. |
These the names of the sons of Aaron, the priests who were anointed and whose hands were filled and consecrated in order to exercise the priesthood. | These are the names of the sons of Aaron, the anointed priests, whom he ordained to serve as priests. | Those were the names of Aaron’s sons, the anointed priests, who were ordained to serve as priests. |
For Nadab and Abihu died without children, when they offered, in the sight of the Lord, a strange fire, in the desert of Sinai. And so, Eleazar and Ithamar exercised the priesthood in the sight of Aaron, their father. | But Nadab and Abihu died before the LORD when they offered unauthorized fire before the LORD in the wilderness of Sinai, and they had no children. So Eleazar and Ithamar served as priests in the lifetime of Aaron their father. | Nadab and Abihu, however, died before the LORD when they made an offering with unauthorized fire before him in the Desert of Sinai. They had no sons, so Eleazar and Ithamar served as priests during the lifetime of their father Aaron. |
And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying: | And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying, | The LORD said to Moses, |
“Bring forward the tribe of Levi, and cause them to stand in the sight of Aaron the priest, in order to minister to him. And let them keep watch outside, | “Bring the tribe of Levi near, and set them before Aaron the priest, that they may minister to him. | “Bring the tribe of Levi and present them to Aaron the priest to assist him. |
and let them observe whatever pertains to the ritual for the multitude, in front of the tabernacle of the testimony, | They shall keep guard over him and over the whole congregation before the tent of meeting, as they minister at the tabernacle. | They are to perform duties for him and for the whole community at the tent of meeting by doing the work of the tabernacle. |
and let them take care of the vessels of the tabernacle, serving in its ministry. | They shall guard all the furnishings of the tent of meeting, and keep guard over the people of Israel as they minister at the tabernacle. | They are to take care of all the furnishings of the tent of meeting, fulfilling the obligations of the Israelites by doing the work of the tabernacle. |
And you shall give the Levites as a gift to Aaron and his sons; for they have been delivered to them by the sons of Israel. | And you shall give the Levites to Aaron and his sons; they are wholly given to him from among the people of Israel. | Give the Levites to Aaron and his sons; they are the Israelites who are to be given wholly to him. |
But you shall appoint Aaron and his sons over the service of priesthood. The outsider who approaches to minister shall be put to death.” | And you shall appoint Aaron and his sons, and they shall guard their priesthood. But if any outsider comes near, he shall be put to death.” | Appoint Aaron and his sons to serve as priests; anyone else who approaches the sanctuary is to be put to death.” |
And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying: | And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying, | The LORD also said to Moses, |
“I have taken the Levites from the sons of Israel. For the Levites, and all the firstborn who open the womb among the sons of Israel, shall be mine. | “Behold, I have taken the Levites from among the people of Israel instead of every firstborn who opens the womb among the people of Israel. The Levites shall be mine, | “I have taken the Levites from among the Israelites in place of the first male offspring of every Israelite woman. The Levites are mine, |
For every firstborn is mine. From the time that I struck the firstborn in the land of Egypt, I have sanctified for myself whatever is born first in Israel. From man, even to beast, they are mine. I am the Lord.” | for all the firstborn are mine. On the day that I struck down all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, I consecrated for my own all the firstborn in Israel, both of man and of beast. They shall be mine: I am the LORD.” | for all the firstborn are mine. When I struck down all the firstborn in Egypt, I set apart for myself every firstborn in Israel, whether human or animal. They are to be mine. I am the LORD.” |
