40 ἔλαβον οὖν τὸ σῶμα τοῦ Ἰησοῦ καὶ ἔδησαν αὐτὸ ὀθονίοις μετὰ τῶν ἀρωμάτων καθὼς ἔθος ἐστὶν τοῖς Ἰουδαίοις ἐνταφιάζειν So they took the body of Jesus and bound it in linen cloths with the spices, as is the burial custom of the Jews. Taking Jesus’ body, the two of them wrapped it, with the spices, in strips of linen. This was in accordance with Jewish burial customs.
41 Ἦν δὲ ἐν τῷ τόπῳ ὅπου ἐσταυρώθη κῆπος καὶ ἐν τῷ κήπῳ μνημεῖον καινόν ἐν ᾧ οὐδέπω οὐδεὶς ἦν τεθειμένος Now in the place where he was crucified there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb in which no one had yet been laid. At the place where Jesus was crucified, there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb, in which no one had ever been laid.
42 ἐκεῖ οὖν διὰ τὴν Παρασκευὴν τῶν Ἰουδαίων ὅτι ἐγγὺς ἦν τὸ μνημεῖον ἔθηκαν τὸν Ἰησοῦν So because of the Jewish day of Preparation, since the tomb was close at hand, they laid Jesus there. Because it was the Jewish day of Preparation and since the tomb was nearby, they laid Jesus there.
