1 And Eliphaz the Temanite answers and says: Then Eliphaz the Temanite answered and said: Then Eliphaz the Temanite replied:
2 “Has one tried a word with you? You are weary! And who is able to keep in words? “If one ventures a word with you, will you be impatient? Yet who can keep from speaking? “If someone ventures a word with you, will you be impatient? But who can keep from speaking?
3 Behold, you have instructed many, || And feeble hands you make strong. Behold, you have instructed many, and you have strengthened the weak hands. Think how you have instructed many, how you have strengthened feeble hands.
4 Your words raise up the stumbling one, || And you strengthen bowing knees. Your words have upheld him who was stumbling, and you have made firm the feeble knees. Your words have supported those who stumbled; you have strengthened faltering knees.
5 But now, it comes to you, || And you are weary; It strikes to you, and you are troubled. But now it has come to you, and you are impatient; it touches you, and you are dismayed. But now trouble comes to you, and you are discouraged; it strikes you, and you are dismayed.
6 Is your reverence not your confidence? Your hope—the perfection of your ways? Is not your fear of God your confidence, and the integrity of your ways your hope? Should not your piety be your confidence and your blameless ways your hope?
7 Now remember, || Who, being innocent, has perished? And where have the upright been cut off? “Remember: who that was innocent ever perished? Or where were the upright cut off? “Consider now: Who, being innocent, has ever perished? Where were the upright ever destroyed?
8 As I have seen—plowers of iniquity, || And sowers of misery, reap it! As I have seen, those who plow iniquity and sow trouble reap the same. As I have observed, those who plow evil and those who sow trouble reap it.
9 From the breath of God they perish, || And from the spirit of His anger [are] consumed. By the breath of God they perish, and by the blast of his anger they are consumed. At the breath of God they perish; at the blast of his anger they are no more.
10 The roaring of a lion, || And the voice of a fierce lion, || And teeth of young lions have been broken. The roar of the lion, the voice of the fierce lion, the teeth of the young lions are broken. The lions may roar and growl, yet the teeth of the great lions are broken.
11 An old lion is perishing without prey, || And the whelps of the lioness separate. The strong lion perishes for lack of prey, and the cubs of the lioness are scattered. The lion perishes for lack of prey, and the cubs of the lioness are scattered.
12 And a thing is secretly brought to me, || And my ear receives a little of it. “Now a word was brought to me stealthily; my ear received the whisper of it. “A word was secretly brought to me, my ears caught a whisper of it.
13 In thoughts from visions of the night, || In the falling of deep sleep on men, Amid thoughts from visions of the night, when deep sleep falls on men, Amid disquieting dreams in the night, when deep sleep falls on people,
14 Fear has met me, and trembling, || And the multitude of my bones caused to fear. dread came upon me, and trembling, which made all my bones shake. fear and trembling seized me and made all my bones shake.
15 And a spirit passes before my face, || The hair of my flesh stands up; A spirit glided past my face; the hair of my flesh stood up. A spirit glided past my face, and the hair on my body stood on end.
16 It stands, and I do not discern its aspect, || A likeness [is] before my eyes, || Silence! And I hear a voice: It stood still, but I could not discern its appearance. A form was before my eyes; there was silence, then I heard a voice: It stopped, but I could not tell what it was. A form stood before my eyes, and I heard a hushed voice:
17 Is mortal man more righteous than God? Is a man cleaner than his Maker? ‘Can mortal man be in the right before God? Can a man be pure before his Maker? Can a mortal be more righteous than God? Can even a strong man be more pure than his Maker?
18 Behold, He puts no credence in His servants, || Nor sets praise in His messengers. Even in his servants he puts no trust, and his angels he charges with error; If God places no trust in his servants, if he charges his angels with error,
19 Also—the inhabitants of houses of clay || (Whose foundation [is] in the dust, || They bruise them before a moth). how much more those who dwell in houses of clay, whose foundation is in the dust, who are crushed like the moth. how much more those who live in houses of clay, whose foundations are in the dust, who are crushed more readily than a moth!
20 From morning to evening are beaten down, || Without any regarding, they perish forever. Between morning and evening they are beaten to pieces; they perish forever without anyone regarding it. Between dawn and dusk they are broken to pieces; unnoticed, they perish forever.
21 Has their excellence not been removed with them? They die, and not in wisdom!” Is not their tent-cord plucked up within them, do they not die, and that without wisdom?’ Are not the cords of their tent pulled up, so that they die without wisdom?’
