1 Then Eliphaz the Temanite replied: Then Eliphaz the Temanite answered and said: Then Eliphaz the Temanite replied:
2 Should anyone try to speak with you when you are exhausted? Yet who can keep from speaking? “If one ventures a word with you, will you be impatient? Yet who can keep from speaking? “If someone ventures a word with you, will you be impatient? But who can keep from speaking?
3 Indeed, you have instructed many and have strengthened weak hands. Behold, you have instructed many, and you have strengthened the weak hands. Think how you have instructed many, how you have strengthened feeble hands.
4 Your words have steadied the one who was stumbling and braced the knees that were buckling. Your words have upheld him who was stumbling, and you have made firm the feeble knees. Your words have supported those who stumbled; you have strengthened faltering knees.
5 But now that this has happened to you, you have become exhausted. It strikes you, and you are dismayed. But now it has come to you, and you are impatient; it touches you, and you are dismayed. But now trouble comes to you, and you are discouraged; it strikes you, and you are dismayed.
6 Isn’t your piety your confidence, and the integrity of your life your hope? Is not your fear of God your confidence, and the integrity of your ways your hope? Should not your piety be your confidence and your blameless ways your hope?
7 Consider: Who has perished when he was innocent? Where have the honest been destroyed? “Remember: who that was innocent ever perished? Or where were the upright cut off? “Consider now: Who, being innocent, has ever perished? Where were the upright ever destroyed?
8 In my experience, those who plow injustice and those who sow trouble reap the same. As I have seen, those who plow iniquity and sow trouble reap the same. As I have observed, those who plow evil and those who sow trouble reap it.
9 They perish at a single blast from God and come to an end by the breath of his nostrils. By the breath of God they perish, and by the blast of his anger they are consumed. At the breath of God they perish; at the blast of his anger they are no more.
10 The lion may roar and the fierce lion growl, but the teeth of young lions are broken. The roar of the lion, the voice of the fierce lion, the teeth of the young lions are broken. The lions may roar and growl, yet the teeth of the great lions are broken.
11 The strong lion dies if it catches no prey, and the cubs of the lioness are scattered. The strong lion perishes for lack of prey, and the cubs of the lioness are scattered. The lion perishes for lack of prey, and the cubs of the lioness are scattered.
12 A word was brought to me in secret; my ears caught a whisper of it. “Now a word was brought to me stealthily; my ear received the whisper of it. “A word was secretly brought to me, my ears caught a whisper of it.
13 Among unsettling thoughts from visions in the night, when deep sleep comes over men, Amid thoughts from visions of the night, when deep sleep falls on men, Amid disquieting dreams in the night, when deep sleep falls on people,
14 fear and trembling came over me and made all my bones shake. dread came upon me, and trembling, which made all my bones shake. fear and trembling seized me and made all my bones shake.
15 I felt a draft on my face, and the hair on my body stood up. A spirit glided past my face; the hair of my flesh stood up. A spirit glided past my face, and the hair on my body stood on end.
16 A figure stood there, but I could not recognize its appearance; a form loomed before my eyes. I heard a whispering voice: It stood still, but I could not discern its appearance. A form was before my eyes; there was silence, then I heard a voice: It stopped, but I could not tell what it was. A form stood before my eyes, and I heard a hushed voice:
17 “Can a mortal be righteous before God? Can a man be more pure than his Maker? ” ‘Can mortal man be in the right before God? Can a man be pure before his Maker? Can a mortal be more righteous than God? Can even a strong man be more pure than his Maker?
18 If God puts no trust in his servants and he charges his angels with foolishness, Even in his servants he puts no trust, and his angels he charges with error; If God places no trust in his servants, if he charges his angels with error,
19 how much more those who dwell in clay houses, whose foundation is in the dust, who are crushed like a moth! how much more those who dwell in houses of clay, whose foundation is in the dust, who are crushed like the moth. how much more those who live in houses of clay, whose foundations are in the dust, who are crushed more readily than a moth!
20 They are smashed to pieces from dawn to dusk; they perish forever while no one notices. Between morning and evening they are beaten to pieces; they perish forever without anyone regarding it. Between dawn and dusk they are broken to pieces; unnoticed, they perish forever.
21 Are their tent cords not pulled up? They die without wisdom. Is not their tent-cord plucked up within them, do they not die, and that without wisdom?’ Are not the cords of their tent pulled up, so that they die without wisdom?’
