1 And Eliphaz the Temanite answered and said: Then Eliphaz the Temanite answered and said: Then Eliphaz the Temanite replied:
2 “Should one try a word with you, will you be wearied? And who is able to be restrained from a word? “If one ventures a word with you, will you be impatient? Yet who can keep from speaking? “If someone ventures a word with you, will you be impatient? But who can keep from speaking?
3 Behold, you have instructed many, and you have strengthened hands that are weak. Behold, you have instructed many, and you have strengthened the weak hands. Think how you have instructed many, how you have strengthened feeble hands.
4 The one stumbling, your words, and bent knees you have strengthened. Your words have upheld him who was stumbling, and you have made firm the feeble knees. Your words have supported those who stumbled; you have strengthened faltering knees.
5 But now it has come to you, and you are weary; it touches unto you, and you are disturbed. But now it has come to you, and you are impatient; it touches you, and you are dismayed. But now trouble comes to you, and you are discouraged; it strikes you, and you are dismayed.
6 Is not your fear your confidence, and the integrity of your ways your hope? Is not your fear of God your confidence, and the integrity of your ways your hope? Should not your piety be your confidence and your blameless ways your hope?
7 Remember please: Who is he who has perished being innocent? And where have the upright been cut off? “Remember: who that was innocent ever perished? Or where were the upright cut off? “Consider now: Who, being innocent, has ever perished? Where were the upright ever destroyed?
8 According to what I have seen, those plowing iniquity and sowing trouble—they shall reap it. As I have seen, those who plow iniquity and sow trouble reap the same. As I have observed, those who plow evil and those who sow trouble reap it.
9 By the breath of God they perish, and by the blast of his nose they are consumed. By the breath of God they perish, and by the blast of his anger they are consumed. At the breath of God they perish; at the blast of his anger they are no more.
10 The roar of the lion and the voice of the fierce lion, and the teeth of the young lions are broken. The roar of the lion, the voice of the fierce lion, the teeth of the young lions are broken. The lions may roar and growl, yet the teeth of the great lions are broken.
11 The lion perishes for lack of prey, and the cubs of the lioness are scattered. The strong lion perishes for lack of prey, and the cubs of the lioness are scattered. The lion perishes for lack of prey, and the cubs of the lioness are scattered.
12 And to me a word was confided; and my ear took in a whisper of it. “Now a word was brought to me stealthily; my ear received the whisper of it. “A word was secretly brought to me, my ears caught a whisper of it.
13 In disquieting thoughts from visions of the night, in the falling of deep sleep upon men, Amid thoughts from visions of the night, when deep sleep falls on men, Amid disquieting dreams in the night, when deep sleep falls on people,
14 dread and trembling met me, and the multitude of my bones it frightened. dread came upon me, and trembling, which made all my bones shake. fear and trembling seized me and made all my bones shake.
15 And a spirit was gliding over my face, the hair of my flesh bristled. A spirit glided past my face; the hair of my flesh stood up. A spirit glided past my face, and the hair on my body stood on end.
16 It stood still, I could not discern its appearance. A likeness was in front of my eyes; there was silence, and I heard a voice: It stood still, but I could not discern its appearance. A form was before my eyes; there was silence, then I heard a voice: It stopped, but I could not tell what it was. A form stood before my eyes, and I heard a hushed voice:
17 ‘Shall a human be righteous more than God? Can a man be pure more than his Maker? ‘Can mortal man be in the right before God? Can a man be pure before his Maker? Can a mortal be more righteous than God? Can even a strong man be more pure than his Maker?
18 Behold, in His servants He does not trust, and His angels He charges with error; Even in his servants he puts no trust, and his angels he charges with error; If God places no trust in his servants, if he charges his angels with error,
19 how much more those dwelling in houses of clay, for whom their foundation is in the dust, who are crushed before a moth? how much more those who dwell in houses of clay, whose foundation is in the dust, who are crushed like the moth. how much more those who live in houses of clay, whose foundations are in the dust, who are crushed more readily than a moth!
20 From morning to evening they are broken to pieces; without anyone noticing, they perish forever. Between morning and evening they are beaten to pieces; they perish forever without anyone regarding it. Between dawn and dusk they are broken to pieces; unnoticed, they perish forever.
21 Has not their tent cord been pulled up with them? They will die, and not in wisdom?’ Is not their tent-cord plucked up within them, do they not die, and that without wisdom?’ Are not the cords of their tent pulled up, so that they die without wisdom?’
