1 Continuing in a similar manner, Eliu had this to say: And Elihu continued, and said: Elihu continued:
2 Bear with me for a little while and I will show you; for I have still more to say in favor of God. “Bear with me a little, and I will show you, for I have yet something to say on God’s behalf. “Bear with me a little longer and I will show you that there is more to be said in God’s behalf.
3 I will review my knowledge from the beginning, and I will prove my Maker to be just. I will get my knowledge from afar and ascribe righteousness to my Maker. I get my knowledge from afar; I will ascribe justice to my Maker.
4 For truly my words are without any falsehood and perfect knowledge will be proven to you. For truly my words are not false; one who is perfect in knowledge is with you. Be assured that my words are not false; one who has perfect knowledge is with you.
5 God does not abandon the powerful, for he himself is also powerful. “Behold, God is mighty, and does not despise any; he is mighty in strength of understanding. “God is mighty, but despises no one; he is mighty, and firm in his purpose.
6 But he does not save the impious, though he grants judgment to the poor. He does not keep the wicked alive, but gives the afflicted their right. He does not keep the wicked alive but gives the afflicted their rights.
7 He will not take his eyes away from the just, and he continually establishes kings on their throne, and they are exalted. He does not withdraw his eyes from the righteous, but with kings on the throne he sets them forever, and they are exalted. He does not take his eyes off the righteous; he enthrones them with kings and exalts them forever.
8 And, if they are in captivity, or are bound with the chains of poverty, And if they are bound in chains and caught in the cords of affliction, But if people are bound in chains, held fast by cords of affliction,
9 he will reveal to them their works, as well as their sinfulness, in that they were violent. then he declares to them their work and their transgressions, that they are behaving arrogantly. he tells them what they have done— that they have sinned arrogantly.
10 Likewise, he will open their ears to his correction, and he will speak to them, so that they may return from iniquity. He opens their ears to instruction and commands that they return from iniquity. He makes them listen to correction and commands them to repent of their evil.
11 If they listen and obey, they will fill their days with goodness and complete their years in glory. If they listen and serve him, they complete their days in prosperity, and their years in pleasantness. If they obey and serve him, they will spend the rest of their days in prosperity and their years in contentment.
12 But if they will not listen, they will pass away by the sword and will be consumed by foolishness. But if they do not listen, they perish by the sword and die without knowledge. But if they do not listen, they will perish by the sword and die without knowledge.
13 The false and the crafty provoke the wrath of God, yet they do not cry out to him when they are chained. “The godless in heart cherish anger; they do not cry for help when he binds them. “The godless in heart harbor resentment; even when he fetters them, they do not cry for help.
14 Their soul will die in a storm, and their life, among the unmanly. They die in youth, and their life ends among the cult prostitutes. They die in their youth, among male prostitutes of the shrines.
15 He will rescue the poor from his anguish, and he will open his ear during tribulation. He delivers the afflicted by their affliction and opens their ear by adversity. But those who suffer he delivers in their suffering; he speaks to them in their affliction.
16 Therefore, he will save you from the narrow mouth very widely, even though it has no foundation under it. Moreover, your respite at table will be full of fatness. He also allured you out of distress into a broad place where there was no cramping, and what was set on your table was full of fatness. “He is wooing you from the jaws of distress to a spacious place free from restriction, to the comfort of your table laden with choice food.
17 Your case has been judged like that of the impious; you will withdraw your plea and your judgment. “But you are full of the judgment on the wicked; judgment and justice seize you. But now you are laden with the judgment due the wicked; judgment and justice have taken hold of you.
18 Therefore, do not let anger overwhelm you so that you oppress another; neither should you allow a multitude of gifts to influence you. Beware lest wrath entice you into scoffing, and let not the greatness of the ransom turn you aside. Be careful that no one entices you by riches; do not let a large bribe turn you aside.
19 Lay down your greatness without distress, and put aside all of your power with courage. Will your cry for help avail to keep you from distress, or all the force of your strength? Would your wealth or even all your mighty efforts sustain you so you would not be in distress?
20 Do not prolong the night, even if people rise on their behalf. Do not long for the night, when peoples vanish in their place. Do not long for the night, to drag people away from their homes.
21 Be careful that you do not turn to iniquity; for, after your misery, you have begun to follow this. Take care; do not turn to iniquity, for this you have chosen rather than affliction. Beware of turning to evil, which you seem to prefer to affliction.
22 Behold, God is exalted in his strength, and there is no one like him among the law-givers. Behold, God is exalted in his power; who is a teacher like him? “God is exalted in his power. Who is a teacher like him?
23 Who is able to investigate his ways? And who can say, “You have done iniquity,” to him? Who has prescribed for him his way, or who can say, ‘You have done wrong’? Who has prescribed his ways for him, or said to him, ‘You have done wrong’?
24 Remember that you are ignorant of his work, yet men have sung its praises. “Remember to extol his work, of which men have sung. Remember to extol his work, which people have praised in song.
25 All men consider him; and each one ponders from a distance. All mankind has looked on it; man beholds it from afar. All humanity has seen it; mortals gaze on it from afar.
26 Behold, God is great, defeating our knowledge; the number of his years is inestimable. Behold, God is great, and we know him not; the number of his years is unsearchable. How great is God—beyond our understanding! The number of his years is past finding out.
27 He carries away the drops of rain, and he sends forth showers like a raging whirlpool; For he draws up the drops of water; they distill his mist in rain, “He draws up the drops of water, which distill as rain to the streams;
28 they flow from the clouds that are woven above everything. which the skies pour down and drop on mankind abundantly. the clouds pour down their moisture and abundant showers fall on mankind.
29 If he wills it, he extends the clouds as his tent Can anyone understand the spreading of the clouds, the thunderings of his pavilion? Who can understand how he spreads out the clouds, how he thunders from his pavilion?
30 and shines with his light from above; likewise, he covers the oceans within his tent. Behold, he scatters his lightning about him and covers the roots of the sea. See how he scatters his lightning about him, bathing the depths of the sea.
31 For he judges the people by these things, and he gives food to a multitude of mortals. For by these he judges peoples; he gives food in abundance. This is the way he governs the nations and provides food in abundance.
32 Within his hands, he hides the light, and he commands it to come forth again. He covers his hands with the lightning and commands it to strike the mark. He fills his hands with lightning and commands it to strike its mark.
33 He announces it to his friend, for it is his possession and he is able to reach out to it. Its crashing declares his presence; the cattle also declare that he rises. His thunder announces the coming storm; even the cattle make known its approach.
