1 At this, my heart became frightened, and it has been moved from its place. “At this also my heart trembles and leaps out of its place. “At this my heart pounds and leaps from its place.
2 Pay close attention to the alarm of his voice and to the sound that proceeds from his mouth. Keep listening to the thunder of his voice and the rumbling that comes from his mouth. Listen! Listen to the roar of his voice, to the rumbling that comes from his mouth.
3 He beholds everything under the heavens, and his light reaches beyond the ends of the earth. Under the whole heaven he lets it go, and his lightning to the corners of the earth. He unleashes his lightning beneath the whole heaven and sends it to the ends of the earth.
4 After this, a noise will sound; he will thunder with the voice of his greatness, and it will not be tracked down, yet his voice will be obeyed. After it his voice roars; he thunders with his majestic voice, and he does not restrain the lightnings when his voice is heard. After that comes the sound of his roar; he thunders with his majestic voice. When his voice resounds, he holds nothing back.
5 God will thunder with his voice miraculously, for he performs great and unsearchable things. God thunders wondrously with his voice; he does great things that we cannot comprehend. God’s voice thunders in marvelous ways; he does great things beyond our understanding.
6 He commands the snow to descend on earth, and the winter rains, and the shower of his strength. For to the snow he says, ‘Fall on the earth,’ likewise to the downpour, his mighty downpour. He says to the snow, ‘Fall on the earth,’ and to the rain shower, ‘Be a mighty downpour.’
7 He signs the hand of all men, so that each one may know his works. He seals up the hand of every man, that all men whom he made may know it. So that everyone he has made may know his work, he stops all people from their labor.
8 The beast will enter his hiding-place, and he will remain in his cave. Then the beasts go into their lairs, and remain in their dens. The animals take cover; they remain in their dens.
9 From the interior, a storm will come forth, and a cold winter from the north. From its chamber comes the whirlwind, and cold from the scattering winds. The tempest comes out from its chamber, the cold from the driving winds.
10 As God breathes out, frost forms, and the waters are poured forth very widely again. By the breath of God ice is given, and the broad waters are frozen fast. The breath of God produces ice, and the broad waters become frozen.
11 Crops desire clouds, and the clouds scatter their light. He loads the thick cloud with moisture; the clouds scatter his lightning. He loads the clouds with moisture; he scatters his lightning through them.
12 It shines all around, wherever the will of him that governs them will lead, to anywhere he will command, over the whole face of the earth, They turn around and around by his guidance, to accomplish all that he commands them on the face of the habitable world. At his direction they swirl around over the face of the whole earth to do whatever he commands them.
13 whether in one tribe, or in his own region, or in whatever place of his mercy that he will order them to be found. Whether for correction or for his land or for love, he causes it to happen. He brings the clouds to punish people, or to water his earth and show his love.
14 Listen to these things, Job. Stand up and consider the wonders of God. “Hear this, O Job; stop and consider the wondrous works of God. “Listen to this, Job; stop and consider God’s wonders.
15 Do you know when God ordered the rains, so as to show the light of his clouds? Do you know how God lays his command upon them and causes the lightning of his cloud to shine? Do you know how God controls the clouds and makes his lightning flash?
16 Do you know the great paths of the clouds, and the perfect sciences? Do you know the balancings of the clouds, the wondrous works of him who is perfect in knowledge, Do you know how the clouds hang poised, those wonders of him who has perfect knowledge?
17 Are not your garments hot, when the south wind blows across the land? you whose garments are hot when the earth is still because of the south wind? You who swelter in your clothes when the land lies hushed under the south wind,
18 Perhaps you have made the heavens with him, which are very solid, as if they had been cast from brass. Can you, like him, spread out the skies, hard as a cast metal mirror? can you join him in spreading out the skies, hard as a mirror of cast bronze?
19 Reveal to us what we should say to him, for, of course, we are wrapped in darkness. Teach us what we shall say to him; we cannot draw up our case because of darkness. “Tell us what we should say to him; we cannot draw up our case because of our darkness.
20 Who will explain to him the things that I am saying? Even while a man is still speaking, he will be devoured. Shall it be told him that I would speak? Did a man ever wish that he would be swallowed up? Should he be told that I want to speak? Would anyone ask to be swallowed up?
21 Although they do not see the light, the air will be thickened suddenly into clouds, and the wind, passing by, will drive them away. “And now no one looks on the light when it is bright in the skies, when the wind has passed and cleared them. Now no one can look at the sun, bright as it is in the skies after the wind has swept them clean.
22 Riches arrive from the north, and fearful praise reaches out to God. Out of the north comes golden splendor; God is clothed with awesome majesty. Out of the north he comes in golden splendor; God comes in awesome majesty.
23 We are not worthy to be able to find him. Great in strength, great in judgment, great in justice: he is indescribable. The Almighty—we cannot find him; he is great in power; justice and abundant righteousness he will not violate. The Almighty is beyond our reach and exalted in power; in his justice and great righteousness, he does not oppress.
24 Therefore, men will fear him, and all those who seem to themselves to be wise, will not dare to contemplate him. Therefore men fear him; he does not regard any who are wise in their own conceit.” Therefore, people revere him, for does he not have regard for all the wise in heart?”
