And Bildad the Shuhite answereth and saith: -- | Then Bildad the Shuhite answered and said: | Then Bildad the Shuhite replied: |
When do ye set an end to words? Consider ye, and afterwards do we speak. | “How long will you hunt for words? Consider, and then we will speak. | “When will you end these speeches? Be sensible, and then we can talk. |
Wherefore have we been reckoned as cattle? We have been defiled in your eyes! | Why are we counted as cattle? Why are we stupid in your sight? | Why are we regarded as cattle and considered stupid in your sight? |
(He is tearing himself in his anger.) For thy sake is earth forsaken? And removed is a rock from its place? | You who tear yourself in your anger, shall the earth be forsaken for you, or the rock be removed out of its place? | You who tear yourself to pieces in your anger, is the earth to be abandoned for your sake? Or must the rocks be moved from their place? |
Also, the light of the wicked is extinguished. And there doth not shine a spark of his fire. | “Indeed, the light of the wicked is put out, and the flame of his fire does not shine. | “The lamp of a wicked man is snuffed out; the flame of his fire stops burning. |
The light hath been dark in his tent, And his lamp over him is extinguished. | The light is dark in his tent, and his lamp above him is put out. | The light in his tent becomes dark; the lamp beside him goes out. |
Straitened are the steps of his strength, And cast him down doth his own counsel. | His strong steps are shortened, and his own schemes throw him down. | The vigor of his step is weakened; his own schemes throw him down. |
For he is sent into a net by his own feet, And on a snare he doth walk habitually. | For he is cast into a net by his own feet, and he walks on its mesh. | His feet thrust him into a net; he wanders into its mesh. |
Seize on the heel doth a gin, Prevail over him do the designing. | A trap seizes him by the heel; a snare lays hold of him. | A trap seizes him by the heel; a snare holds him fast. |
Hidden in the earth is his cord, And his trap on the path. | A rope is hidden for him in the ground, a trap for him in the path. | A noose is hidden for him on the ground; a trap lies in his path. |
Round about terrified him have terrors, And they have scattered him -- at his feet. | Terrors frighten him on every side, and chase him at his heels. | Terrors startle him on every side and dog his every step. |
Hungry is his sorrow, And calamity is ready at his side. | His strength is famished, and calamity is ready for his stumbling. | Calamity is hungry for him; disaster is ready for him when he falls. |
It consumeth the parts of his skin, Consume his parts doth death's first-born. | It consumes the parts of his skin; the firstborn of death consumes his limbs. | It eats away parts of his skin; death’s firstborn devours his limbs. |
Drawn from his tent is his confidence, And it causeth him to step to the king of terrors. | He is torn from the tent in which he trusted and is brought to the king of terrors. | He is torn from the security of his tent and marched off to the king of terrors. |
It dwelleth in his tent -- out of his provender, Scattered over his habitation is sulphur. | In his tent dwells that which is none of his; sulfur is scattered over his habitation. | Fire resides in his tent; burning sulfur is scattered over his dwelling. |
From beneath his roots are dried up, And from above cut off is his crop. | His roots dry up beneath, and his branches wither above. | His roots dry up below and his branches wither above. |
His memorial hath perished from the land, And he hath no name on the street. | His memory perishes from the earth, and he has no name in the street. | The memory of him perishes from the earth; he has no name in the land. |
They thrust him from light unto darkness, And from the habitable earth cast him out. | He is thrust from light into darkness, and driven out of the world. | He is driven from light into the realm of darkness and is banished from the world. |
He hath no continuator, Nor successor among his people, And none is remaining in his dwellings. | He has no posterity or progeny among his people, and no survivor where he used to live. | He has no offspring or descendants among his people, no survivor where once he lived. |
At this day westerns have been astonished And easterns have taken fright. | They of the west are appalled at his day, and horror seizes them of the east. | People of the west are appalled at his fate; those of the east are seized with horror. |
Only these are tabernacles of the perverse, And this the place God hath not known. | Surely such are the dwellings of the unrighteous, such is the place of him who knows not God.” | Surely such is the dwelling of an evil man; such is the place of one who does not know God.” |
