1 Hear this, priests! Pay attention, house of Israel! Listen, royal house! For the judgment applies to you because you have been a snare at Mizpah and a net spread out on Tabor. Hear this, O priests! Pay attention, O house of Israel! Give ear, O house of the king! For the judgment is for you; for you have been a snare at Mizpah and a net spread upon Tabor. “Hear this, you priests! Pay attention, you Israelites! Listen, royal house! This judgment is against you: You have been a snare at Mizpah, a net spread out on Tabor.
2 Rebels are deeply involved in slaughter; I will be a punishment for all of them. And the revolters have gone deep into slaughter, but I will discipline all of them. The rebels are knee-deep in slaughter. I will discipline all of them.
3 I know Ephraim, and Israel is not hidden from me. For now, Ephraim, you have acted promiscuously; Israel is defiled. I know Ephraim, and Israel is not hidden from me; for now, O Ephraim, you have played the whore; Israel is defiled. I know all about Ephraim; Israel is not hidden from me. Ephraim, you have now turned to prostitution; Israel is corrupt.
4 Their actions do not allow them to return to their God, for a spirit of promiscuity is among them, and they do not know the LORD. Their deeds do not permit them to return to their God. 5 Israel’s arrogance testifies against them. Both Israel and Ephraim stumble because of their iniquity; even Judah will stumble with them. 6 They go with their flocks and herds to seek the LORD but do not find him; he has withdrawn from them. 10 The princes of Judah are like those who move boundary markers; I will pour out my fury on them like water. The princes of Judah have become like those who move the landmark; upon them I will pour out my wrath like water. Judah’s leaders are like those who move boundary stones. I will pour out my wrath on them like a flood of water.
11 Ephraim is oppressed, crushed in judgment, for he is determined to follow what is worthless. Ephraim is oppressed, crushed in judgment, because he was determined to go after filth. Ephraim is oppressed, trampled in judgment, intent on pursuing idols.
12 So I am like rot to Ephraim and like decay to the house of Judah. But I am like a moth to Ephraim, and like dry rot to the house of Judah. I am like a moth to Ephraim, like rot to the people of Judah.
13 When Ephraim saw his sickness and Judah his wound, Ephraim went to Assyria and sent a delegation to the great king. But he cannot cure you or heal your wound. For I will be like a lion to Ephraim, like a great lion to Judah. I will tear them to pieces and go away; I will carry them off, with no one to rescue them.
15 I will depart and return to my place until they recognize their guilt and seek my face; they will search for me in their distress. I will return again to my place, until they acknowledge their guilt and seek my face, and in their distress earnestly seek me. Then I will return to my lair until they have borne their guilt and seek my face— in their misery they will earnestly seek me.”
