1 Therefore leaving the elementary teaching about the Christ, let us press on to maturity, not laying again a foundation of repentance from dead works and of faith toward God, Therefore let us leave the elementary doctrine of Christ and go on to maturity, not laying again a foundation of repentance from dead works and of faith toward God, Therefore let us move beyond the elementary teachings about Christ and be taken forward to maturity, not laying again the foundation of repentance from acts that lead to death, and of faith in God,
2 of teaching about washings and laying on of hands, and the resurrection of the dead and eternal judgment. and of instruction about washings, the laying on of hands, the resurrection of the dead, and eternal judgment. instruction about cleansing rites, the laying on of hands, the resurrection of the dead, and eternal judgment.
3 And this we will do, if God permits. And this we will do if God permits. And God permitting, we will do so.
4 For in the case of those once having been enlightened and having tasted of the heavenly gift and having become partakers of the Holy Spirit, For it is impossible, in the case of those who have once been enlightened, who have tasted the heavenly gift, and have shared in the Holy Spirit, It is impossible for those who have once been enlightened, who have tasted the heavenly gift, who have shared in the Holy Spirit,
5 and having tasted the good word of God and the powers of the age to come, and have tasted the goodness of the word of God and the powers of the age to come, who have tasted the goodness of the word of God and the powers of the coming age
6 and having fallen away, it is impossible to renew them again to repentance, since they again crucify to themselves the Son of God and put Him to open shame. and then have fallen away, to restore them again to repentance, since they are crucifying once again the Son of God to their own harm and holding him up to contempt. and who have fallen away, to be brought back to repentance. To their loss they are crucifying the Son of God all over again and subjecting him to public disgrace.
7 For ground that drinks the rain which often falls on it and brings forth vegetation useful to those for whose sake it is also tilled, receives a blessing from God; For land that has drunk the rain that often falls on it, and produces a crop useful to those for whose sake it is cultivated, receives a blessing from God. Land that drinks in the rain often falling on it and that produces a crop useful to those for whom it is farmed receives the blessing of God.
8 but if it yields thorns and thistles, it is unfit and close to being cursed, and its end is to be burned. But if it bears thorns and thistles, it is worthless and near to being cursed, and its end is to be burned. But land that produces thorns and thistles is worthless and is in danger of being cursed. In the end it will be burned.
9 But we are convinced about you, beloved, of things that are better and that belong to salvation, though we are speaking in this way. Though we speak in this way, yet in your case, beloved, we feel sure of better things—things that belong to salvation. Even though we speak like this, dear friends, we are convinced of better things in your case—the things that have to do with salvation.
10 For God is not unrighteous so as to forget your work and the love which you have shown toward His name, in having ministered and continuing to minister to the saints. For God is not unjust so as to overlook your work and the love that you have shown for his name in serving the saints, as you still do. God is not unjust; he will not forget your work and the love you have shown him as you have helped his people and continue to help them.
11 And we desire that each one of you show the same diligence so as to realize the full assurance of hope until the end, And we desire each one of you to show the same earnestness to have the full assurance of hope until the end, We want each of you to show this same diligence to the very end, so that what you hope for may be fully realized.
12 so that you may not become dull, but imitators of those who through faith and patience inherit the promises. so that you may not be sluggish, but imitators of those who through faith and patience inherit the promises. We do not want you to become lazy, but to imitate those who through faith and patience inherit what has been promised.
13 For when God made the promise to Abraham, since He could swear by no one greater, He swore by Himself, For when God made a promise to Abraham, since he had no one greater by whom to swear, he swore by himself, When God made his promise to Abraham, since there was no one greater for him to swear by, he swore by himself,
14 saying, “I WILL GREATLY BLESS YOU AND I WILL GREATLY MULTIPLY YOU.” saying, “Surely I will bless you and multiply you.” saying, “I will surely bless you and give you many descendants.”
15 And so, having patiently waited, he obtained the promise. And thus Abraham, having patiently waited, obtained the promise. And so after waiting patiently, Abraham received what was promised.
16 For men swear by one greater than themselves, and with them an oath given as confirmation is an end of every dispute. For people swear by something greater than themselves, and in all their disputes an oath is final for confirmation. People swear by someone greater than themselves, and the oath confirms what is said and puts an end to all argument.
17 In the same way God, desiring even more to show to the heirs of the promise the unchangeableness of His purpose, guaranteed it with an oath, So when God desired to show more convincingly to the heirs of the promise the unchangeable character of his purpose, he guaranteed it with an oath, Because God wanted to make the unchanging nature of his purpose very clear to the heirs of what was promised, he confirmed it with an oath.
18 so that by two unchangeable things in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have taken refuge would have strong encouragement to take hold of the hope set before us. so that by two unchangeable things, in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have fled for refuge might have strong encouragement to hold fast to the hope set before us. God did this so that, by two unchangeable things in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have fled to take hold of the hope set before us may be greatly encouraged.
19 This hope we have as an anchor of the soul, a hope both sure and confirmed and one which enters within the veil, We have this as a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul, a hope that enters into the inner place behind the curtain, We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure. It enters the inner sanctuary behind the curtain,
20 where a forerunner has entered for us—Jesus, having become a high priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek. where Jesus has gone as a forerunner on our behalf, having become a high priest forever after the order of Melchizedek. where our forerunner, Jesus, has entered on our behalf. He has become a high priest forever, in the order of Melchizedek.
