1 On the twenty-first day of the seventh month, the LORD spoke his word through the prophet Haggai. He said, In the seventh month, on the twenty-first day of the month, the word of the LORD came by the hand of Haggai the prophet: on the twenty-first day of the seventh month, the word of the LORD came through the prophet Haggai:
2 |Now, speak to Zerubbabel (who is the son of Shealtiel and is governor of Judah), the chief priest Joshua (who is the son of Jehozadak), and the faithful few who returned from Babylon. “Speak now to Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and to all the remnant of the people, and say, “Speak to Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, to Joshua son of Jozadak, the high priest, and to the remnant of the people. Ask them,
3 Ask them, 'Is there anyone among the faithful few who saw this house in its former glory? How does it look to you now? Doesn't it seem like nothing to you?' ‘Who is left among you who saw this house in its former glory? How do you see it now? Is it not as nothing in your eyes? Who of you is left who saw this house in its former glory? How does it look to you now? Does it not seem to you like nothing?
4 |But now, Zerubbabel, be strong,| declares the LORD. |Chief Priest Joshua (son of Jehozadak), be strong. Everyone in the land, be strong,| declares the LORD. |Work, because I am with you,| declares the LORD of Armies. Yet now be strong, O Zerubbabel, declares the LORD. Be strong, O Joshua, son of Jehozadak, the high priest. Be strong, all you people of the land, declares the LORD. Work, for I am with you, declares the LORD of hosts, But now be strong, Zerubbabel,’ declares the LORD. ‘Be strong, Joshua son of Jozadak, the high priest. Be strong, all you people of the land,’ declares the LORD, ‘and work. For I am with you,’ declares the LORD Almighty.
5 |This is the promise I made to you when you came out of Egypt. My Spirit remains with you. Don't be afraid. according to the covenant that I made with you when you came out of Egypt. My Spirit remains in your midst. Fear not. This is what I covenanted with you when you came out of Egypt. And my Spirit remains among you. Do not fear.’
6 |This is what the LORD of Armies says: Once again, in a little while, I am going to shake the sky and the earth, the sea and the dry land. For thus says the LORD of hosts: Yet once more, in a little while, I will shake the heavens and the earth and the sea and the dry land. “This is what the LORD Almighty says: ‘In a little while I will once more shake the heavens and the earth, the sea and the dry land.
7 I will shake all the nations, and the one whom all the nations desire will come. Then I will fill this house with glory, says the LORD of Armies. And I will shake all nations, so that the treasures of all nations shall come in, and I will fill this house with glory, says the LORD of hosts. I will shake all nations, and what is desired by all nations will come, and I will fill this house with glory,’ says the LORD Almighty.
8 The silver is mine, and the gold is mine, declares the LORD of Armies. The silver is mine, and the gold is mine, declares the LORD of hosts. The silver is mine and the gold is mine,’ declares the LORD Almighty.
9 This new house will be more glorious than the former, declares the LORD of Armies. And in this place I will give [them] peace, declares the LORD of Armies.| The latter glory of this house shall be greater than the former, says the LORD of hosts. And in this place I will give peace, declares the LORD of hosts.’” The glory of this present house will be greater than the glory of the former house,’ says the LORD Almighty. ‘And in this place I will grant peace,’ declares the LORD Almighty.”
10 On the twenty-fourth day of the ninth month in Darius' second year as king, the LORD spoke his word to the prophet Haggai. He said, On the twenty-fourth day of the ninth month, in the second year of Darius, the word of the LORD came by Haggai the prophet, On the twenty-fourth day of the ninth month, in the second year of Darius, the word of the LORD came to the prophet Haggai:
11 |This is what the LORD of Armies says: Ask the priests for a decision. “Thus says the LORD of hosts: Ask the priests about the law: “This is what the LORD Almighty says: ‘Ask the priests what the law says:
12 Suppose a person carries meat set aside for a holy purpose and he folds it up in his clothes. If his clothes touch bread, boiled food, wine, oil, or any kind of food, does that make the food holy?| The priests answered, |No.| ‘If someone carries holy meat in the fold of his garment and touches with his fold bread or stew or wine or oil or any kind of food, does it become holy?’” The priests answered and said, “No.” If someone carries consecrated meat in the fold of their garment, and that fold touches some bread or stew, some wine, olive oil or other food, does it become consecrated?’” The priests answered, “No.”
13 Haggai asked, |Suppose a person becomes unclean by touching a corpse. If he touches any of these things, does that make them unclean?| The priests answered, |That makes them unclean.| Then Haggai said, “If someone who is unclean by contact with a dead body touches any of these, does it become unclean?” The priests answered and said, “It does become unclean.” Then Haggai said, “If a person defiled by contact with a dead body touches one of these things, does it become defiled?” “Yes,” the priests replied, “it becomes defiled.”
14 Then Haggai answered, |In the same way, I have decided that these people are unclean, and so is this nation, declares the LORD. So is everything they do. Whatever offering they bring is unclean. Then Haggai answered and said, “So is it with this people, and with this nation before me, declares the LORD, and so with every work of their hands. And what they offer there is unclean. Then Haggai said, “’So it is with this people and this nation in my sight,’ declares the LORD. ‘Whatever they do and whatever they offer there is defiled.
15 |And from now on, carefully consider this. Consider how things were before one stone was laid on another in the temple of the LORD. Now then, consider from this day onward. Before stone was placed upon stone in the temple of the LORD, “’Now give careful thought to this from this day on —consider how things were before one stone was laid on another in the LORD’s temple.
16 When anyone came to a pile of grain [to get] 20 measures, there would be only 10. And when anyone came to a wine vat to draw out 50 measures, there would be only 20 in it. how did you fare? When one came to a heap of twenty measures, there were but ten. When one came to the wine vat to draw fifty measures, there were but twenty. When anyone came to a heap of twenty measures, there were only ten. When anyone went to a wine vat to draw fifty measures, there were only twenty.
17 I infested all your work with blight and mildew and struck it with hail. But you didn't come back to me, declares the LORD. I struck you and all the products of your toil with blight and with mildew and with hail, yet you did not turn to me, declares the LORD. I struck all the work of your hands with blight, mildew and hail, yet you did not return to me,’ declares the LORD.
18 Carefully consider from now on, from the twenty-fourth day of the ninth month, from the day when the foundation of the house of the LORD was laid. Carefully consider: Consider from this day onward, from the twenty-fourth day of the ninth month. Since the day that the foundation of the LORD’s temple was laid, consider: From this day on, from this twenty-fourth day of the ninth month, give careful thought to the day when the foundation of the LORD’s temple was laid. Give careful thought:
19 Is there any seed left in the barn? The vine, the fig tree, the pomegranate, and the olive tree still haven't produced. But from now on I will bless you.| Is the seed yet in the barn? Indeed, the vine, the fig tree, the pomegranate, and the olive tree have yielded nothing. But from this day on I will bless you.” Is there yet any seed left in the barn? Until now, the vine and the fig tree, the pomegranate and the olive tree have not borne fruit. “’From this day on I will bless you.’”
20 The LORD spoke his word to Haggai a second time on the twenty-fourth day of the month. He said, The word of the LORD came a second time to Haggai on the twenty-fourth day of the month, The word of the LORD came to Haggai a second time on the twenty-fourth day of the month:
21 |Say to Zerubbabel (governor of Judah), 'I am going to shake the heavens and the earth. “Speak to Zerubbabel, governor of Judah, saying, I am about to shake the heavens and the earth, “Tell Zerubbabel governor of Judah that I am going to shake the heavens and the earth.
22 I will overthrow the thrones of kingdoms and destroy the power of nations. I will overthrow chariots and their riders, and the horses will fall along with their riders. They will kill one another with swords. and to overthrow the throne of kingdoms. I am about to destroy the strength of the kingdoms of the nations, and overthrow the chariots and their riders. And the horses and their riders shall go down, every one by the sword of his brother. I will overturn royal thrones and shatter the power of the foreign kingdoms. I will overthrow chariots and their drivers; horses and their riders will fall, each by the sword of his brother.
23 On that day, declares the LORD of Armies, I will take you, my servant Zerubbabel (son of Shealtiel), declares the LORD. I will make you like a signet ring, because I have chosen you, declares the LORD of Armies.'| On that day, declares the LORD of hosts, I will take you, O Zerubbabel my servant, the son of Shealtiel, declares the LORD, and make you like a signet ring, for I have chosen you, declares the LORD of hosts.” “’On that day,’ declares the LORD Almighty, ‘I will take you, my servant Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel,’ declares the LORD, ‘and I will make you like my signet ring, for I have chosen you,’ declares the LORD Almighty.”
