1 And you were once dead in your sins and offenses, And you were dead in the trespasses and sins As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins,
2 in which you walked in times past, according to the age of this world, according to the prince of the power of this sky, the spirit who now works in the sons of distrust. in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience— in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient.
3 And we too were all conversant in these things, in times past, by the desires of our flesh, acting according to the will of the flesh and according to our own thoughts. And so we were, by nature, sons of wrath, even like the others. among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the body and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind. All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our flesh and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature deserving of wrath.
4 Yet still, God, who is rich in mercy, for the sake of his exceedingly great charity with which he loved us, But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy,
5 even when we were dead in our sins, has enlivened us together in Christ, by whose grace you have been saved. even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved— made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved.
6 And he has raised us up together, and he has caused us to sit down together in the heavens, in Christ Jesus, and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus,
7 so that he may display, in the ages soon to arrive, the abundant wealth of his grace, by his goodness toward us in Christ Jesus. so that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. in order that in the coming ages he might show the incomparable riches of his grace, expressed in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus.
8 For by grace, you have been saved through faith. And this is not of yourselves, for it is a gift of God. For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—
9 And this is not of works, so that no one may glory. not a result of works, so that no one may boast. not by works, so that no one can boast.
10 For we are his handiwork, created in Christ Jesus for the good works which God has prepared and in which we should walk. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them. For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.
11 Because of this, be mindful that, in times past, you were Gentiles in the flesh, and that you were called uncircumcised by those who are called circumcised in the flesh, something done by man, Therefore remember that at one time you Gentiles in the flesh, called “the uncircumcision” by what is called the circumcision, which is made in the flesh by hands— Therefore, remember that formerly you who are Gentiles by birth and called “uncircumcised” by those who call themselves “the circumcision” (which is done in the body by human hands)—
12 and that you were, in that time, without Christ, being foreign to the way of life of Israel, being visitors to the testament, having no hope of the promise, and being without God in this world. remember that you were at that time separated from Christ, alienated from the commonwealth of Israel and strangers to the covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in the world. remember that at that time you were separate from Christ, excluded from citizenship in Israel and foreigners to the covenants of the promise, without hope and without God in the world.
13 But now, in Christ Jesus, you, who were in times past far away, have been brought near by the blood of Christ. But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ. But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far away have been brought near by the blood of Christ.
14 For he is our peace. He made the two into one, by dissolving the intermediate wall of separation, of opposition, by his flesh, For he himself is our peace, who has made us both one and has broken down in his flesh the dividing wall of hostility For he himself is our peace, who has made the two groups one and has destroyed the barrier, the dividing wall of hostility,
15 emptying the law of commandments by decree, so that he might join these two, in himself, into one new man, making peace by abolishing the law of commandments expressed in ordinances, that he might create in himself one new man in place of the two, so making peace, by setting aside in his flesh the law with its commands and regulations. His purpose was to create in himself one new humanity out of the two, thus making peace,
16 and reconciling both to God, in one body, through the cross, destroying this opposition in himself. and might reconcile us both to God in one body through the cross, thereby killing the hostility. and in one body to reconcile both of them to God through the cross, by which he put to death their hostility.
17 And upon arriving, he evangelized peace to you who were far away, and peace to those who were near. And he came and preached peace to you who were far off and peace to those who were near. He came and preached peace to you who were far away and peace to those who were near.
18 For by him, we both have access, in the one Spirit, to the Father. For through him we both have access in one Spirit to the Father. For through him we both have access to the Father by one Spirit.
19 Now, therefore, you are no longer visitors and new arrivals. Instead, you are citizens among the saints in the household of God, So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, Consequently, you are no longer foreigners and strangers, but fellow citizens with God’s people and also members of his household,
20 having been built upon the foundation of the Apostles and of the Prophets, with Jesus Christ himself as the preeminent cornerstone. built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone, built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the chief cornerstone.
21 In him, all that has been built is framed together, rising up into a holy temple in the Lord. in whom the whole structure, being joined together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord. In him the whole building is joined together and rises to become a holy temple in the Lord.
22 In him, you also have been built together into a habitation of God in the Spirit. In him you also are being built together into a dwelling place for God by the Spirit. And in him you too are being built together to become a dwelling in which God lives by his Spirit.
