1 NOW at that very time Herod the king surnamed A-grip’pa seized some of the people of the church to oppress them. About that time Herod the king laid violent hands on some who belonged to the church. It was about this time that King Herod arrested some who belonged to the church, intending to persecute them.
2 And he killed James the brother of John with the sword. He killed James the brother of John with the sword, He had James, the brother of John, put to death with the sword.
3 And when he saw that this pleased the Jews, he proceeded to arrest Simon Peter also. This happened during the days of unleavened bread. and when he saw that it pleased the Jews, he proceeded to arrest Peter also. This was during the days of Unleavened Bread. When he saw that this met with approval among the Jews, he proceeded to seize Peter also. This happened during the Festival of Unleavened Bread.
4 So he seized him and put him in prison and delivered him to the care of sixteen soldiers to keep him, so that he might deliver him to the Jewish people after the passover. And when he had seized him, he put him in prison, delivering him over to four squads of soldiers to guard him, intending after the Passover to bring him out to the people. After arresting him, he put him in prison, handing him over to be guarded by four squads of four soldiers each. Herod intended to bring him out for public trial after the Passover.
5 And while Simon Peter was kept in the prison, continual prayer was offered for him to God by the church. So Peter was kept in prison, but earnest prayer for him was made to God by the church. So Peter was kept in prison, but the church was earnestly praying to God for him.
6 And on the very night before the morning that he was to be delivered up, while Simon Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, bound with two chains, and others were guarding the doors of the prison, Now when Herod was about to bring him out, on that very night, Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, bound with two chains, and sentries before the door were guarding the prison. The night before Herod was to bring him to trial, Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, bound with two chains, and sentries stood guard at the entrance.
7 The angel of the LORD stood over him, and a light shone in all the prison: and the angel touched him on the side and awoke him, and said to him, Rise up quickly. And the chains fell off from his hands. And behold, an angel of the Lord stood next to him, and a light shone in the cell. He struck Peter on the side and woke him, saying, “Get up quickly.” And the chains fell off his hands. Suddenly an angel of the Lord appeared and a light shone in the cell. He struck Peter on the side and woke him up. “Quick, get up!” he said, and the chains fell off Peter’s wrists.
8 And the angel said to him, Bind on your girdle and put on your sandals. And so he did. And again he said to him, Put on your robe and follow me. And the angel said to him, “Dress yourself and put on your sandals.” And he did so. And he said to him, “Wrap your cloak around you and follow me.” Then the angel said to him, “Put on your clothes and sandals.” And Peter did so. “Wrap your cloak around you and follow me,” the angel told him.
9 And he went out, and followed the angel, not knowing that what was done by the angel was true, but thought he saw a vision. And he went out and followed him. He did not know that what was being done by the angel was real, but thought he was seeing a vision. Peter followed him out of the prison, but he had no idea that what the angel was doing was really happening; he thought he was seeing a vision.
10 When they had passed the first and the second guard, they came to the iron gate and it opened to them of its own accord; and when they had gone out, and had passed one street, the angel departed from him. When they had passed the first and the second guard, they came to the iron gate leading into the city. It opened for them of its own accord, and they went out and went along one street, and immediately the angel left him. They passed the first and second guards and came to the iron gate leading to the city. It opened for them by itself, and they went through it. When they had walked the length of one street, suddenly the angel left him.
11 And when Simon Peter came to himself he said, Now I surely know, that the LORD has sent his angel and has delivered me out of the hand of Herod, the king, and from all that the Jews were conspiring against me. When Peter came to himself, he said, “Now I am sure that the Lord has sent his angel and rescued me from the hand of Herod and from all that the Jewish people were expecting.” Then Peter came to himself and said, “Now I know without a doubt that the Lord has sent his angel and rescued me from Herod’s clutches and from everything the Jewish people were hoping would happen.”
12 And when he understood, he went to the house of Mary the mother of John, whose surname was Mark; because many brethren were gathered there praying. When he realized this, he went to the house of Mary, the mother of John whose other name was Mark, where many were gathered together and were praying. When this had dawned on him, he went to the house of Mary the mother of John, also called Mark, where many people had gathered and were praying.
13 When he knocked at the door of the courtyard, a little girl named Rhoda came out to answer. And when he knocked at the door of the gateway, a servant girl named Rhoda came to answer. Peter knocked at the outer entrance, and a servant named Rhoda came to answer the door.
14 And when she recognized Simon’s voice, because of her joy she did not open the door to him, but ran back and told, Behold Simon Peter stands at the gate of the courtyard. Recognizing Peter’s voice, in her joy she did not open the gate but ran in and reported that Peter was standing at the gate. When she recognized Peter’s voice, she was so overjoyed she ran back without opening it and exclaimed, “Peter is at the door!”
15 They said to her, You are confused. But she argued that it was so. Then said they, Perhaps it is his angel. They said to her, “You are out of your mind.” But she kept insisting that it was so, and they kept saying, “It is his angel!” “You’re out of your mind,” they told her. When she kept insisting that it was so, they said, “It must be his angel.”
16 But Simon Peter continued knocking at the door; and they went out, and saw him, and were astonished. But Peter continued knocking, and when they opened, they saw him and were amazed. But Peter kept on knocking, and when they opened the door and saw him, they were astonished.
17 But he motioned to them with his hand to keep quiet; then he entered and related to them how the LORD had brought him out of the prison. And he said, Tell these things to James, and to our brethren. And he went out, and departed for another place. But motioning to them with his hand to be silent, he described to them how the Lord had brought him out of the prison. And he said, “Tell these things to James and to the brothers.” Then he departed and went to another place. Peter motioned with his hand for them to be quiet and described how the Lord had brought him out of prison. “Tell James and the other brothers and sisters about this,” he said, and then he left for another place.
18 Now when it was morning, there was great tumult among the soldiers as to what had become of Simon Peter. Now when day came, there was no little disturbance among the soldiers over what had become of Peter. In the morning, there was no small commotion among the soldiers as to what had become of Peter.
19 When Herod had sought him and could not find him, he sentenced the guards and commanded that they should be put to death. And Simon Peter left Ju-dæ’a and stayed at Cæs-a-re’a. And after Herod searched for him and did not find him, he examined the sentries and ordered that they should be put to death. Then he went down from Judea to Caesarea and spent time there. After Herod had a thorough search made for him and did not find him, he cross-examined the guards and ordered that they be executed. Then Herod went from Judea to Caesarea and stayed there.
20 Herod was angry with the people of Tyre and Sidon, but they assembled together and came to him, and they appealed to Blas’tus, the king’s chamberlain, and asked him that they might have peace, because their country was dependent upon the kingdom of Herod for food supplies. Now Herod was angry with the people of Tyre and Sidon, and they came to him with one accord, and having persuaded Blastus, the king’s chamberlain, they asked for peace, because their country depended on the king’s country for food. He had been quarreling with the people of Tyre and Sidon; they now joined together and sought an audience with him. After securing the support of Blastus, a trusted personal servant of the king, they asked for peace, because they depended on the king’s country for their food supply.
21 Upon the set day Herod, arrayed in royal apparel, sat upon the throne and addressed the assembly. On an appointed day Herod put on his royal robes, took his seat upon the throne, and delivered an oration to them. On the appointed day Herod, wearing his royal robes, sat on his throne and delivered a public address to the people.
22 And all the people shouted, saying, This sounds like the voice of God speaking and not that of a man. And the people were shouting, “The voice of a god, and not of a man!” They shouted, “This is the voice of a god, not of a man.”
23 And because he did not give the glory to God, in that very hour an angel of the LORD smote him, and he was eaten by disease and died. Immediately an angel of the Lord struck him down, because he did not give God the glory, and he was eaten by worms and breathed his last. Immediately, because Herod did not give praise to God, an angel of the Lord struck him down, and he was eaten by worms and died.
24 But the gospel of God continued to be preached and to reach many. But the word of God increased and multiplied. But the word of God continued to spread and flourish.
25 Bar’na-bas and Saul, after they had fulfilled their ministry, returned from Jerusalem to An’ti-och, and took with them John whose surname was Mark. And Barnabas and Saul returned from Jerusalem when they had completed their service, bringing with them John, whose other name was Mark. When Barnabas and Saul had finished their mission, they returned from Jerusalem, taking with them John, also called Mark.
