About that time Herod the king laid violent hands on some who belonged to the church. About that time King Herod cruelly attacked some who belonged to the church, Now about that time Herod the king stretched forth his hands to vex certain of the church. Now about that time Herod the king laid hands on some who belonged to the church, to do them harm.
He killed James the brother of John with the sword, and he killed James, John’s brother, with the sword. And he killed James the brother of John with the sword. And he had James the brother of John executed with a sword.
and when he saw that it pleased the Jews, he proceeded to arrest Peter also. This was during the days of Unleavened Bread. When he saw that it pleased the Jews, he proceeded to arrest Peter too, during the days of Unleavened Bread. And because he saw it pleased the Jews, he proceeded further to take Peter also. (Then were the days of unleavened bread.) When he saw that it pleased the Jews, he proceeded to arrest Peter as well. (Now these were the days of Unleavened Bread.)
And when he had seized him, he put him in prison, delivering him over to four squads of soldiers to guard him, intending after the Passover to bring him out to the people. After the arrest, he put him in prison and assigned four squads of four soldiers each to guard him, intending to bring him out to the people after the Passover. And when he had apprehended him, he put him in prison, and delivered him to four quaternions of soldiers to keep him; intending after Easter to bring him forth to the people. When he had arrested him, he put him in prison, turning him over to four squads of soldiers to guard him, intending only after the Passover to bring him before the people.
So Peter was kept in prison, but earnest prayer for him was made to God by the church. So Peter was kept in prison, but prayer was being made earnestly to God for him by the church. Peter therefore was kept in prison: but prayer was made without ceasing of the church unto God for him. So Peter was kept in the prison, but prayer for him was being made to God intensely by the church.
Now when Herod was about to bring him out, on that very night, Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, bound with two chains, and sentries before the door were guarding the prison. On the night before Herod was to bring him out for execution, Peter, bound with two chains, was sleeping between two soldiers, while the sentries in front of the door guarded the prison. And when Herod would have brought him forth, the same night Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, bound with two chains: and the keepers before the door kept the prison. On the very night when Herod was about to bring him forward, Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, bound with two chains, and guards in front of the door were watching over the prison.
And behold, an angel of the Lord stood next to him, and a light shone in the cell. He struck Peter on the side and woke him, saying, “Get up quickly.” And the chains fell off his hands. Suddenly an angel of the Lord appeared, and a light shone in the cell. Striking Peter on the side, he woke him up and said, “Quick, get up!” Then the chains fell off his wrists.” And, behold, the angel of the Lord came upon him, and a light shined in the prison: and he smote Peter on the side, and raised him up, saying, Arise up quickly. And his chains fell off from his hands. And behold, an angel of the Lord suddenly stood near Peter, and a light shone in the cell; and he struck Peter’s side and woke him, saying, “Get up quickly.” And his chains fell off his hands.
And the angel said to him, “Dress yourself and put on your sandals.” And he did so. And he said to him, “Wrap your cloak around you and follow me.” Get dressed,” the angel told him, “and put on your sandals.” And he did so. “Wrap your cloak around you,” he told him, “and follow me.” And the angel said unto him, Gird thyself, and bind on thy sandals. And so he did. And he saith unto him, Cast thy garment about thee, and follow me. And the angel said to him, “Put on your belt and strap on your sandals.” And he did so. And he said to him, “Wrap your cloak around you and follow me.”
And he went out and followed him. He did not know that what was being done by the angel was real, but thought he was seeing a vision. So he went out and followed, and he did not know that what took place through the angel was real, but thought he was seeing a vision. And he went out, and followed him; and wist not that it was true which was done by the angel; but thought he saw a vision. And he went out and continued to follow, and yet he did not know that what was being done by the angel was real, but thought he was seeing a vision.
When they had passed the first and the second guard, they came to the iron gate leading into the city. It opened for them of its own accord, and they went out and went along one street, and immediately the angel left him. After they passed the first and second guard posts, they came to the iron gate that leads into the city, which opened to them by itself. They went outside and passed one street, and immediately the angel left him. When they were past the first and the second ward, they came unto the iron gate that leadeth unto the city; which opened to them of his own accord: and they went out, and passed on through one street; and forthwith the angel departed from him. Now when they had passed the first and second guard, they came to the iron gate that leads into the city, which opened for them by itself; and they went out and went along one street, and immediately the angel departed from him.
When Peter came to himself, he said, “Now I am sure that the Lord has sent his angel and rescued me from the hand of Herod and from all that the Jewish people were expecting.” Then Peter came to himself and said, “Now I know for certain that the Lord has sent His angel and rescued me from Herod’s grasp and from all that the Jewish people expected.” And when Peter was come to himself, he said, Now I know of a surety, that the Lord hath sent his angel, and hath delivered me out of the hand of Herod, and from all the expectation of the people of the Jews. When Peter came to himself, he said, “Now I know for sure that the Lord has sent forth His angel and rescued me from the hand of Herod and from all that the Jewish people were expecting.”
When he realized this, he went to the house of Mary, the mother of John whose other name was Mark, where many were gathered together and were praying. When he realized this, he went to the house of Mary, the mother of John Mark, where many had assembled and were praying. And when he had considered the thing, he came to the house of Mary the mother of John, whose surname was Mark; where many were gathered together praying. And when he realized this, he went to the house of Mary, the mother of John, who was also called Mark, where many were gathered together and were praying.
And when he knocked at the door of the gateway, a servant girl named Rhoda came to answer. He knocked at the door in the gateway, and a servant named Rhoda came to answer. And as Peter knocked at the door of the gate, a damsel came to hearken, named Rhoda. When he knocked at the door of the gate, a slave woman named Rhoda came to answer.
Recognizing Peter’s voice, in her joy she did not open the gate but ran in and reported that Peter was standing at the gate. She recognized Peter’s voice, and because of her joy, she did not open the gate but ran in and announced that Peter was standing at the gateway.” And when she knew Peter's voice, she opened not the gate for gladness, but ran in, and told how Peter stood before the gate. When she recognized Peter’s voice, because of her joy she did not open the gate, but ran in and announced that Peter was standing in front of the gate.
They said to her, “You are out of your mind.” But she kept insisting that it was so, and they kept saying, “It is his angel!” You’re crazy!” they told her. But she kept insisting that it was true. Then they said, “It’s his angel!” And they said unto her, Thou art mad. But she constantly affirmed that it was even so. Then said they, It is his angel. They said to her, “You are out of your mind!” But she kept insisting that it was so. They said, “It is his angel.”
But Peter continued knocking, and when they opened, they saw him and were amazed. Peter, however, kept on knocking, and when they opened the door and saw him, they were astounded. But Peter continued knocking: and when they had opened the door, and saw him, they were astonished. But Peter continued knocking; and when they had opened the door, they saw him and were amazed.
But motioning to them with his hand to be silent, he described to them how the Lord had brought him out of the prison. And he said, “Tell these things to James and to the brothers.” Then he departed and went to another place. Motioning to them with his hand to be silent, he explained to them how the Lord had brought him out of the prison. “Report these things to James and the brothers,” he said. Then he departed and went to a different place. But he, beckoning unto them with the hand to hold their peace, declared unto them how the Lord had brought him out of the prison. And he said, Go shew these things unto James, and to the brethren. And he departed, and went into another place. But motioning to them with his hand to be silent, he described to them how the Lord had led him out of the prison. And he said, “Report these things to James and the brothers.” Then he left and went to another place.
Now when day came, there was no little disturbance among the soldiers over what had become of Peter. At daylight, there was a great commotion among the soldiers as to what could have become of Peter. Now as soon as it was day, there was no small stir among the soldiers, what was become of Peter. Now when day came, there was no small disturbance among the soldiers as to what could have become of Peter.
And after Herod searched for him and did not find him, he examined the sentries and ordered that they should be put to death. Then he went down from Judea to Caesarea and spent time there. After Herod had searched and did not find him, he interrogated the guards and ordered their execution. Then Herod went down from Judea to Caesarea and stayed there. And when Herod had sought for him, and found him not, he examined the keepers, and commanded that they should be put to death. And he went down from Judaea to Caesarea, and there abode. When Herod had searched for him and had not found him, he examined the guards and ordered that they be led away to execution. Then he went down from Judea to Caesarea and was spending time there.
Now Herod was angry with the people of Tyre and Sidon, and they came to him with one accord, and having persuaded Blastus, the king’s chamberlain, they asked for peace, because their country depended on the king’s country for food. He had been very angry with the Tyrians and Sidonians. Together they presented themselves before him. They won over Blastus, who was in charge of the king’s bedroom, and through him they asked for peace, because their country was supplied with food from the king’s country. And Herod was highly displeased with them of Tyre and Sidon: but they came with one accord to him, and, having made Blastus the king's chamberlain their friend, desired peace; because their country was nourished by the king's country. Now he was very angry with the people of Tyre and Sidon; and with one mind they came to him, and having won over Blastus the king’s chamberlain, they were asking for peace, because their country was supported with grain from the king’s country.
On an appointed day Herod put on his royal robes, took his seat upon the throne, and delivered an oration to them. So on an appointed day, dressed in royal robes and seated on the throne, Herod delivered a public address to them. And upon a set day Herod, arrayed in royal apparel, sat upon his throne, and made an oration unto them. On an appointed day, after putting on his royal apparel, Herod took his seat on the rostrum and began delivering an address to them.
And the people were shouting, “The voice of a god, and not of a man!” The assembled people began to shout, “It’s the voice of a god and not of a man!” And the people gave a shout, saying, It is the voice of a god, and not of a man. The people repeatedly cried out, “The voice of a god and not of a man!”
Immediately an angel of the Lord struck him down, because he did not give God the glory, and he was eaten by worms and breathed his last. At once an angel of the Lord struck him because he did not give the glory to God, and he became infected with worms and died. And immediately the angel of the Lord smote him, because he gave not God the glory: and he was eaten of worms, and gave up the ghost. And immediately an angel of the Lord struck him because he did not give God the glory, and he was eaten by worms and died.
But the word of God increased and multiplied. Then God’s message flourished and multiplied. But the word of God grew and multiplied. But the word of the Lord continued to grow and to be multiplied.
And Barnabas and Saul returned from Jerusalem when they had completed their service, bringing with them John, whose other name was Mark. After they had completed their relief mission, Barnabas and Saul returned to Jerusalem, taking along John who is called Mark. And Barnabas and Saul returned from Jerusalem, when they had fulfilled their ministry, and took with them John, whose surname was Mark. And Barnabas and Saul returned when they had fulfilled their mission to Jerusalem, taking along with them John, who was also called Mark.
