1 Paul, apostle of Jesus Christ by God's will, according to promise of life, the [life] which [is] in Christ Jesus, Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God according to the promise of the life that is in Christ Jesus, Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, in keeping with the promise of life that is in Christ Jesus,
2 to Timotheus, [my] beloved child: grace, mercy, peace, from God [the] Father, and Christ Jesus our Lord. To Timothy, my beloved child: Grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord. To Timothy, my dear son: Grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.
3 I am thankful to God, whom I serve from [my] forefathers with pure conscience, how unceasingly I have the remembrance of thee in my supplications night and day, I thank God whom I serve, as did my ancestors, with a clear conscience, as I remember you constantly in my prayers night and day. I thank God, whom I serve, as my ancestors did, with a clear conscience, as night and day I constantly remember you in my prayers.
4 earnestly desiring to see thee, remembering thy tears, that I may be filled with joy; As I remember your tears, I long to see you, that I may be filled with joy. Recalling your tears, I long to see you, so that I may be filled with joy.
5 calling to mind the unfeigned faith which [has been] in thee, which dwelt first in thy grandmother Lois, and in thy mother Eunice, and I am persuaded that in thee also. I am reminded of your sincere faith, a faith that dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice and now, I am sure, dwells in you as well. I am reminded of your sincere faith, which first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice and, I am persuaded, now lives in you also.
6 For which cause I put thee in mind to rekindle the gift of God which is in thee by the putting on of my hands. For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands, For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands.
7 For God has not given us a spirit of cowardice, but of power, and of love, and of wise discretion. for God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control. For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline.
8 Be not therefore ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me his prisoner; but suffer evil along with the glad tidings, according to the power of God; Therefore do not be ashamed of the testimony about our Lord, nor of me his prisoner, but share in suffering for the gospel by the power of God, So do not be ashamed of the testimony about our Lord or of me his prisoner. Rather, join with me in suffering for the gospel, by the power of God.
9 who has saved us, and has called us with a holy calling, not according to our works, but according to [his] own purpose and grace, which [was] given to us in Christ Jesus before [the] ages of time, who saved us and called us to a holy calling, not because of our works but because of his own purpose and grace, which he gave us in Christ Jesus before the ages began, He has saved us and called us to a holy life—not because of anything we have done but because of his own purpose and grace. This grace was given us in Christ Jesus before the beginning of time,
10 but has been made manifest now by the appearing of our Saviour Jesus Christ, who has annulled death, and brought to light life and incorruptibility by the glad tidings; and which now has been manifested through the appearing of our Savior Christ Jesus, who abolished death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel, but it has now been revealed through the appearing of our Savior, Christ Jesus, who has destroyed death and has brought life and immortality to light through the gospel.
11 to which I have been appointed a herald and apostle and teacher of [the] nations. for which I was appointed a preacher and apostle and teacher, And of this gospel I was appointed a herald and an apostle and a teacher.
12 For which cause also I suffer these things; but I am not ashamed; for I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep for that day the deposit I have entrusted to him. which is why I suffer as I do. But I am not ashamed, for I know whom I have believed, and I am convinced that he is able to guard until that day what has been entrusted to me. That is why I am suffering as I am. Yet this is no cause for shame, because I know whom I have believed, and am convinced that he is able to guard what I have entrusted to him until that day.
13 Have an outline of sound words, which [words] thou hast heard of me, in faith and love which [are] in Christ Jesus. Follow the pattern of the sound words that you have heard from me, in the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus. What you heard from me, keep as the pattern of sound teaching, with faith and love in Christ Jesus.
14 Keep, by the Holy Spirit which dwells in us, the good deposit entrusted. By the Holy Spirit who dwells within us, guard the good deposit entrusted to you. Guard the good deposit that was entrusted to you—guard it with the help of the Holy Spirit who lives in us.
15 Thou knowest this, that all who [are] in Asia, of whom is Phygellus and Hermogenes, have turned away from me. You are aware that all who are in Asia turned away from me, among whom are Phygelus and Hermogenes. You know that everyone in the province of Asia has deserted me, including Phygelus and Hermogenes.
16 The Lord grant mercy to the house of Onesiphorus, for he has often refreshed me, and has not been ashamed of my chain; May the Lord grant mercy to the household of Onesiphorus, for he often refreshed me and was not ashamed of my chains, May the Lord show mercy to the household of Onesiphorus, because he often refreshed me and was not ashamed of my chains.
17 but being in Rome sought me out very diligently, and found [me] -- but when he arrived in Rome he searched for me earnestly and found me— On the contrary, when he was in Rome, he searched hard for me until he found me.
18 the Lord grant to him to find mercy from [the] Lord in that day -- and how much service he rendered in Ephesus thou knowest best. may the Lord grant him to find mercy from the Lord on that day!—and you well know all the service he rendered at Ephesus. May the Lord grant that he will find mercy from the Lord on that day! You know very well in how many ways he helped me in Ephesus.
