1 For we know, if our earthly house of this habitation be dissolved, that we have a building of God, a house not made with hands, eternal in heaven. For we know that if the tent that is our earthly home is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. For we know that if the earthly tent we live in is destroyed, we have a building from God, an eternal house in heaven, not built by human hands.
2 For in this also we groan, desiring to be clothed upon with our habitation that is from heaven. For in this tent we groan, longing to put on our heavenly dwelling, Meanwhile we groan, longing to be clothed instead with our heavenly dwelling,
3 Yet so that we be found clothed, not naked. if indeed by putting it on we may not be found naked. because when we are clothed, we will not be found naked.
4 For we also, who are in this tabernacle, do groan, being burthened; because we would not be unclothed, but clothed upon, that that which is mortal may be swallowed up by life. For while we are still in this tent, we groan, being burdened—not that we would be unclothed, but that we would be further clothed, so that what is mortal may be swallowed up by life. For while we are in this tent, we groan and are burdened, because we do not wish to be unclothed but to be clothed instead with our heavenly dwelling, so that what is mortal may be swallowed up by life.
5 Now he that maketh us for this very thing, is God, who hath given us the pledge of the Spirit. He who has prepared us for this very thing is God, who has given us the Spirit as a guarantee. Now the one who has fashioned us for this very purpose is God, who has given us the Spirit as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come.
6 Therefore having always confidence, knowing that, while we are in the body, we are absent from the Lord. So we are always of good courage. We know that while we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord, Therefore we are always confident and know that as long as we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord.
7 (For we walk by faith, and not by sight.) for we walk by faith, not by sight. For we live by faith, not by sight.
8 But we are confident, and have a good will to be absent rather from the body, and to be present with the Lord. Yes, we are of good courage, and we would rather be away from the body and at home with the Lord. We are confident, I say, and would prefer to be away from the body and at home with the Lord.
9 And therefore we labour, whether absent or present, to please him. So whether we are at home or away, we make it our aim to please him. So we make it our goal to please him, whether we are at home in the body or away from it.
10 For we must all be manifested before the judgement seat of Christ, that every one may receive the proper things of the body, according as he hath done, whether it be good or evil. For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may receive what is due for what he has done in the body, whether good or evil. For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each of us may receive what is due us for the things done while in the body, whether good or bad.
11 Knowing therefore the fear of the Lord, we use persuasion to men; but to God we are manifest. And I trust also that in your consciences we are manifest. Therefore, knowing the fear of the Lord, we persuade others. But what we are is known to God, and I hope it is known also to your conscience. Since, then, we know what it is to fear the Lord, we try to persuade others. What we are is plain to God, and I hope it is also plain to your conscience.
12 We commend not ourselves again to you, but give you occasion to glory in our behalf; that you may have somewhat to answer them who glory in face, and not in heart. We are not commending ourselves to you again but giving you cause to boast about us, so that you may be able to answer those who boast about outward appearance and not about what is in the heart. We are not trying to commend ourselves to you again, but are giving you an opportunity to take pride in us, so that you can answer those who take pride in what is seen rather than in what is in the heart.
13 For whether we be transported in mind, it is to God; or whether we be sober, it is for you. For if we are beside ourselves, it is for God; if we are in our right mind, it is for you. If we are “out of our mind,” as some say, it is for God; if we are in our right mind, it is for you.
14 For the charity of Christ presseth us: judging this, that if one died for all, then all were dead. For the love of Christ controls us, because we have concluded this: that one has died for all, therefore all have died; For Christ’s love compels us, because we are convinced that one died for all, and therefore all died.
15 And Christ died for all; that they also who live, may not now live to themselves, but unto him who died for them, and rose again. and he died for all, that those who live might no longer live for themselves but for him who for their sake died and was raised. And he died for all, that those who live should no longer live for themselves but for him who died for them and was raised again.
16 Wherefore henceforth, we know no man according to the flesh. And if we have known Christ according to the flesh; but now we know him so no longer. From now on, therefore, we regard no one according to the flesh. Even though we once regarded Christ according to the flesh, we regard him thus no longer. So from now on we regard no one from a worldly point of view. Though we once regarded Christ in this way, we do so no longer.
17 If then any be in Christ a new creature, the old things are passed away, behold all things are made new. Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come. Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!
18 But all things are of God, who hath reconciled us to himself by Christ; and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation. All this is from God, who through Christ reconciled us to himself and gave us the ministry of reconciliation; All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation:
19 For God indeed was in Christ, reconciling the world to himself, not imputing to them their sins; and he hath placed in us the word of reconciliation. that is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation. that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting people’s sins against them. And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation.
20 For Christ therefore we are ambassadors, God as it were exhorting by us. For Christ, we beseech you, be reconciled to God. Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us. We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God. We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ’s behalf: Be reconciled to God.
21 Him, who knew no sin, he hath made sin for us, that we might be made the justice of God in him. For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God. God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.
