1 And the men of Kiriath-jearim came and took the ark of YHWH, and brought it into the house of Abinadab on the hill. And they consecrated Eleazar his son to guard the ark of YHWH. And the men of Kiriath-jearim came and took up the ark of the LORD and brought it to the house of Abinadab on the hill. And they consecrated his son Eleazar to have charge of the ark of the LORD. So the men of Kiriath Jearim came and took up the ark of the LORD. They brought it to Abinadab’s house on the hill and consecrated Eleazar his son to guard the ark of the LORD.
2 And it came to pass that the ark remained at Kiriath-jearim, and the days were multiplied—and it was there twenty years. And all the house of Israel lamented after YHWH. From the day that the ark was lodged at Kiriath-jearim, a long time passed, some twenty years, and all the house of Israel lamented after the LORD. The ark remained at Kiriath Jearim a long time—twenty years in all. Then all the people of Israel turned back to the LORD.
3 And Samuel spoke to all the house of Israel, saying, “If with all your⁺ heart you⁺ are returning to YHWH, put away the foreign gods from your⁺ midst, and the Ashtoreths, and prepare your⁺ hearts for YHWH, and serve Him only. And He will snatch you⁺ up from the hand of the Philistines.” And Samuel said to all the house of Israel, “If you are returning to the LORD with all your heart, then put away the foreign gods and the Ashtaroth from among you and direct your heart to the LORD and serve him only, and he will deliver you out of the hand of the Philistines.” So Samuel said to all the Israelites, “If you are returning to the LORD with all your hearts, then rid yourselves of the foreign gods and the Ashtoreths and commit yourselves to the LORD and serve him only, and he will deliver you out of the hand of the Philistines.”
4 And the sons of Israel put away the Baals and the Ashtoreths, and they served YHWH only. So the people of Israel put away the Baals and the Ashtaroth, and they served the LORD only. So the Israelites put away their Baals and Ashtoreths, and served the LORD only.
5 And Samuel said, “Gather all Israel to Mizpah, and I will pray for you⁺ to YHWH.” Then Samuel said, “Gather all Israel at Mizpah, and I will pray to the LORD for you.” Then Samuel said, “Assemble all Israel at Mizpah, and I will intercede with the LORD for you.”
6 And they gathered together at Mizpah, and they drew water and poured it out before the face of YHWH. And they fasted that day and said there, “We have sinned against YHWH.” And Samuel judged the sons of Israel at Mizpah. So they gathered at Mizpah and drew water and poured it out before the LORD and fasted on that day and said there, “We have sinned against the LORD.” And Samuel judged the people of Israel at Mizpah. When they had assembled at Mizpah, they drew water and poured it out before the LORD. On that day they fasted and there they confessed, “We have sinned against the LORD.” Now Samuel was serving as leader of Israel at Mizpah.
7 And the Philistines heard that the sons of Israel had gathered together at Mizpah, and the lords of the Philistines went up against Israel. And the sons of Israel heard, and they were afraid of the Philistines. Now when the Philistines heard that the people of Israel had gathered at Mizpah, the lords of the Philistines went up against Israel. And when the people of Israel heard of it, they were afraid of the Philistines. When the Philistines heard that Israel had assembled at Mizpah, the rulers of the Philistines came up to attack them. When the Israelites heard of it, they were afraid because of the Philistines.
8 And the sons of Israel said to Samuel, “Do not cease from crying out to YHWH our God, that He may save us from the hand of the Philistines.” And the people of Israel said to Samuel, “Do not cease to cry out to the LORD our God for us, that he may save us from the hand of the Philistines.” They said to Samuel, “Do not stop crying out to the LORD our God for us, that he may rescue us from the hand of the Philistines.”
9 And Samuel took one suckling lamb and offered it as a whole burnt offering to YHWH. And Samuel cried out to YHWH for Israel, and YHWH answered him. So Samuel took a nursing lamb and offered it as a whole burnt offering to the LORD. And Samuel cried out to the LORD for Israel, and the LORD answered him. Then Samuel took a suckling lamb and sacrificed it as a whole burnt offering to the LORD. He cried out to the LORD on Israel’s behalf, and the LORD answered him.
10 And Samuel was offering up the burnt offering, and the Philistines drew near to the battle against Israel. And YHWH thundered in a loud thunder that day upon the Philistines, and He confused them and they were struck before the face of Israel. As Samuel was offering up the burnt offering, the Philistines drew near to attack Israel. But the LORD thundered with a mighty sound that day against the Philistines and threw them into confusion, and they were defeated before Israel. While Samuel was sacrificing the burnt offering, the Philistines drew near to engage Israel in battle. But that day the LORD thundered with loud thunder against the Philistines and threw them into such a panic that they were routed before the Israelites.
11 And Israel went out from the men of Mizpah, and they pursued the Philistines and drove them back even as far as below Beth-car. And the men of Israel went out from Mizpah and pursued the Philistines and struck them, as far as below Beth-car. The men of Israel rushed out of Mizpah and pursued the Philistines, slaughtering them along the way to a point below Beth Kar.
12 And Samuel took one stone and set it up between Mizpah and between Shen, and he called its name Ebenezer and said, “As far as here, YHWH has helped us.” Then Samuel took a stone and set it up between Mizpah and Shen and called its name Ebenezer; for he said, “Till now the LORD has helped us.” Then Samuel took a stone and set it up between Mizpah and Shen. He named it Ebenezer, saying, “Thus far the LORD has helped us.”
13 And the Philistines were subdued; and they added not anymore to come into the territory of Israel. And the hand of YHWH was against the Philistines all the days of Samuel. So the Philistines were subdued and did not again enter the territory of Israel. And the hand of the LORD was against the Philistines all the days of Samuel. So the Philistines were subdued and they stopped invading Israel’s territory. Throughout Samuel’s lifetime, the hand of the LORD was against the Philistines.
14 And the cities that the Philistines had taken from Israel were restored to Israel, from Ekron to Gath; and its territory Israel delivered from the hand of the Philistines. And there was peace between Israel and between the Amorite. The cities that the Philistines had taken from Israel were restored to Israel, from Ekron to Gath, and Israel delivered their territory from the hand of the Philistines. There was peace also between Israel and the Amorites. The towns from Ekron to Gath that the Philistines had captured from Israel were restored to Israel, and Israel delivered the neighboring territory from the hands of the Philistines. And there was peace between Israel and the Amorites.
15 And Samuel judged Israel all the days of his life. Samuel judged Israel all the days of his life. Samuel continued as Israel’s leader all the days of his life.
16 And He went from year to year on a circuit to Bethel, and Gilgal, and Mizpah, and he judged Israel in all these places. And he went on a circuit year by year to Bethel, Gilgal, and Mizpah. And he judged Israel in all these places. From year to year he went on a circuit from Bethel to Gilgal to Mizpah, judging Israel in all those places.
17 And his returning was to Ramath, for his house was there, and there he judged Israel. And he built there an altar to YHWH. Then he would return to Ramah, for his home was there, and there also he judged Israel. And he built there an altar to the LORD. But he always went back to Ramah, where his home was, and there he also held court for Israel. And he built an altar there to the LORD.
