1 Now the children of Israel according to their number, the heads of families, captains of thousands and of hundreds, and officers, that served the king according to their companies, who came in and went out every month in the year, under every chief were four and twenty thousand. This is the number of the people of Israel, the heads of fathers’ houses, the commanders of thousands and hundreds, and their officers who served the king in all matters concerning the divisions that came and went, month after month throughout the year, each division numbering 24,000: This is the list of the Israelites—heads of families, commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds, and their officers, who served the king in all that concerned the army divisions that were on duty month by month throughout the year. Each division consisted of 24,000 men.
2 Over the first company the first month Jesboam, the son of Zabdiel was chief, and under him were four and twenty thousand. Jashobeam the son of Zabdiel was in charge of the first division in the first month; in his division were 24,000. In charge of the first division, for the first month, was Jashobeam son of Zabdiel. There were 24,000 men in his division.
3 Of the sons of Phares, the chief of all the captains in the host in the first month. He was a descendant of Perez and was chief of all the commanders. He served for the first month. He was a descendant of Perez and chief of all the army officers for the first month.
4 The company of the second month was under Dudia, an Ahohite, and after him was another named Macelloth, who commanded a part of the army of four and twenty thousand. Dodai the Ahohite was in charge of the division of the second month; in his division were 24,000. In charge of the division for the second month was Dodai the Ahohite; Mikloth was the leader of his division. There were 24,000 men in his division.
5 And the captain of the third company for the third month, was Banaias the son of Joiada the priest: and in his division were four and twenty thousand. The third commander, for the third month, was Benaiah, the son of Jehoiada the chief priest; in his division were 24,000. The third army commander, for the third month, was Benaiah son of Jehoiada the priest. He was chief and there were 24,000 men in his division.
6 This is that Banaias the most valiant among the thirty, and above the thirty. And Amizabad his son commanded his company. This is the Benaiah who was a mighty man of the thirty and in command of the thirty; Ammizabad his son was in charge of his division. This was the Benaiah who was a mighty warrior among the Thirty and was over the Thirty. His son Ammizabad was in charge of his division.
7 The fourth, for the fourth month, was Asahel the brother of Joab, and Zabadias his son after him: and in his company were four and twenty thousand. Asahel the brother of Joab was fourth, for the fourth month, and his son Zebadiah after him; in his division were 24,000. The fourth, for the fourth month, was Asahel the brother of Joab; his son Zebadiah was his successor. There were 24,000 men in his division.
8 The fifth captain for the fifth month, was Samaoth a Jezerite: and his company were four and twenty thousand. The fifth commander, for the fifth month, was Shamhuth the Izrahite; in his division were 24,000. The fifth, for the fifth month, was the commander Shamhuth the Izrahite. There were 24,000 men in his division.
9 The sixth, for the sixth month, was Hira the son of Acces a Thecuite: and in his company were four and twenty thousand. Sixth, for the sixth month, was Ira, the son of Ikkesh the Tekoite; in his division were 24,000. The sixth, for the sixth month, was Ira the son of Ikkesh the Tekoite. There were 24,000 men in his division.
10 The seventh, for the seventh month, was Helles a Phallonite of the sons of Ephraim: and in his company were four and twenty thousand. Seventh, for the seventh month, was Helez the Pelonite, of the sons of Ephraim; in his division were 24,000. The seventh, for the seventh month, was Helez the Pelonite, an Ephraimite. There were 24,000 men in his division.
11 The eighth, for the eighth month, was Sobochai a Husathite of the race of Zarahi: and in his company were four and twenty thousand. Eighth, for the eighth month, was Sibbecai the Hushathite, of the Zerahites; in his division were 24,000. The eighth, for the eighth month, was Sibbekai the Hushathite, a Zerahite. There were 24,000 men in his division.
12 The ninth, for the ninth month, was Abiezer an Anathothite of the sons of Jemini, and in His company were four and twenty thousand. Ninth, for the ninth month, was Abiezer of Anathoth, a Benjaminite; in his division were 24,000. The ninth, for the ninth month, was Abiezer the Anathothite, a Benjamite. There were 24,000 men in his division.
13 The tenth, for the tenth month, was Marai, who was a Netophathite of the race of Zarai: and in his company were four and twenty thousand. Tenth, for the tenth month, was Maharai of Netophah, of the Zerahites; in his division were 24,000. The tenth, for the tenth month, was Maharai the Netophathite, a Zerahite. There were 24,000 men in his division.
14 The eleventh, for the eleventh month, was Banaias, a Pharathonite of the sons of Ephraim: and in his company were four and twenty thousand. Eleventh, for the eleventh month, was Benaiah of Pirathon, of the sons of Ephraim; in his division were 24,000. The eleventh, for the eleventh month, was Benaiah the Pirathonite, an Ephraimite. There were 24,000 men in his division.
15 The twelfth, for the twelfth month, was Holdai a Netophathite, of the race of Gothoniel: and in his company were four and twenty thousand. Twelfth, for the twelfth month, was Heldai the Netophathite, of Othniel; in his division were 24,000. The twelfth, for the twelfth month, was Heldai the Netophathite, from the family of Othniel. There were 24,000 men in his division.
16 Now the chiefs over the tribes of Israel were these: over the Rubenites, Eliezer the son of Zechri was ruler: over the Simeonites, Saphatias the son of Maacha : Over the tribes of Israel, for the Reubenites, Eliezer the son of Zichri was chief officer; for the Simeonites, Shephatiah the son of Maacah; The leaders of the tribes of Israel: over the Reubenites: Eliezer son of Zikri; over the Simeonites: Shephatiah son of Maakah;
17 Over the Levites, Hasabias the son of Camuel: over the Aaronites, Sadoc: for Levi, Hashabiah the son of Kemuel; for Aaron, Zadok; over Levi: Hashabiah son of Kemuel; over Aaron: Zadok;
18 Over Juda, Eliu the brother of David: over Issachar, Amri the son of Michael: for Judah, Elihu, one of David’s brothers; for Issachar, Omri the son of Michael; over Judah: Elihu, a brother of David; over Issachar: Omri son of Michael;
19 Over the Zabulonites, Jesmaias the son of Adias : over the Nephtalites, Jerimoth the son of Ozriel: for Zebulun, Ishmaiah the son of Obadiah; for Naphtali, Jeremoth the son of Azriel; over Zebulun: Ishmaiah son of Obadiah; over Naphtali: Jerimoth son of Azriel;
20 Over the sons of Ephraim, Osee the: son of Ozaziu: over the half tribe of Manasses, Joel the son of Phadaia: for the Ephraimites, Hoshea the son of Azaziah; for the half-tribe of Manasseh, Joel the son of Pedaiah; over the Ephraimites: Hoshea son of Azaziah; over half the tribe of Manasseh: Joel son of Pedaiah;
21 And over the half tribe of Manasses: in Galaad, Jaddo the son of Zacharias: and over Benjamin, Jasiel the son of Abner. for the half-tribe of Manasseh in Gilead, Iddo the son of Zechariah; for Benjamin, Jaasiel the son of Abner; over the half-tribe of Manasseh in Gilead: Iddo son of Zechariah; over Benjamin: Jaasiel son of Abner;
22 And over Dan, Ezrihel the son of Jeroham: these were the princes of the children of Israel. for Dan, Azarel the son of Jeroham. These were the leaders of the tribes of Israel. over Dan: Azarel son of Jeroham. These were the leaders of the tribes of Israel.
23 But David would not number them from twenty years old and under: because the Lord had said that he would multiply Israel like the stars of heaven. David did not count those below twenty years of age, for the LORD had promised to make Israel as many as the stars of heaven. David did not take the number of the men twenty years old or less, because the LORD had promised to make Israel as numerous as the stars in the sky.
24 Joab the son of Sarvia began to number, but he finished not: because upon this there fell wrath upon Israel: and therefore the number of them that were numbered, was not registered in the chronicles of king David. Joab the son of Zeruiah began to count, but did not finish. Yet wrath came upon Israel for this, and the number was not entered in the chronicles of King David. Joab son of Zeruiah began to count the men but did not finish. God’s wrath came on Israel on account of this numbering, and the number was not entered in the book of the annals of King David.
25 And over the king's treasures was Azmoth the son of Adiel: and over those stores which were in the cities, and is the villages, and in the castles, was Jonathan the son of Ozias. Over the king’s treasuries was Azmaveth the son of Adiel; and over the treasuries in the country, in the cities, in the villages, and in the towers, was Jonathan the son of Uzziah; Azmaveth son of Adiel was in charge of the royal storehouses. Jonathan son of Uzziah was in charge of the storehouses in the outlying districts, in the towns, the villages and the watchtowers.
26 And over the tillage, and the husbandmen, who tilled the ground, was Ezri the son of Chelub: and over those who did the work of the field for tilling the soil was Ezri the son of Chelub; Ezri son of Kelub was in charge of the workers who farmed the land.
27 And over the dressers of the vineyards, was Semeias a Romathite: and over the wine cellars, Zabdias an Aphonite. and over the vineyards was Shimei the Ramathite; and over the produce of the vineyards for the wine cellars was Zabdi the Shiphmite. Shimei the Ramathite was in charge of the vineyards. Zabdi the Shiphmite was in charge of the produce of the vineyards for the wine vats.
28 And over the oliveyards and the fig groves, which were in the plains, was Balanam a Gederite: and over the oil cellars, Joas. Over the olive and sycamore trees in the Shephelah was Baal-hanan the Gederite; and over the stores of oil was Joash. Baal-Hanan the Gederite was in charge of the olive and sycamore-fig trees in the western foothills. Joash was in charge of the supplies of olive oil.
29 And over the herds that fed in Saron, was Setrai a Saronite: and over the. oxen in the valleys, Saphat the son of Adli: Over the herds that pastured in Sharon was Shitrai the Sharonite; over the herds in the valleys was Shaphat the son of Adlai. Shitrai the Sharonite was in charge of the herds grazing in Sharon. Shaphat son of Adlai was in charge of the herds in the valleys.
30 And over the camels, Ubil an Ishmahelite: and over the asses, Jadias a Meronathite: Over the camels was Obil the Ishmaelite; and over the donkeys was Jehdeiah the Meronothite. Over the flocks was Jaziz the Hagrite. Obil the Ishmaelite was in charge of the camels. Jehdeiah the Meronothite was in charge of the donkeys.
31 And over the sheep Jazia an Agarene. All these were the rulers of the substance of king David. All these were stewards of King David’s property. Jaziz the Hagrite was in charge of the flocks. All these were the officials in charge of King David’s property.
32 And Jonathan David's uncle, a counsellor, a wise and learned man: he and Jahiel the son of Hachamoni were with the king's sons. Jonathan, David’s uncle, was a counselor, being a man of understanding and a scribe. He and Jehiel the son of Hachmoni attended the king’s sons. Jonathan, David’s uncle, was a counselor, a man of insight and a scribe. Jehiel son of Hakmoni took care of the king’s sons.
33 And Achitophel was the king's counsellor, and Chusai the Arachite, the king's friend. Ahithophel was the king’s counselor, and Hushai the Archite was the king’s friend. Ahithophel was the king’s counselor. Hushai the Arkite was the king’s confidant.
34 And after Achitophel was Joiada the son of Banaias, and Abiathar. And the general of the king's army was Joab. Ahithophel was succeeded by Jehoiada the son of Benaiah, and Abiathar. Joab was commander of the king’s army. Ahithophel was succeeded by Jehoiada son of Benaiah and by Abiathar. Joab was the commander of the royal army.
