A wise child accepts a parent’s discipline; a mocker refuses to listen to correction.1A wise son accepts his father's discipline, but a scoffer does not listen to rebuke.
Wise words will win you a good meal, but treacherous people have an appetite for violence.2From the fruit of his speech a person eats good things, but the faithless desire the fruit of violence.
Those who control their tongue will have a long life; opening your mouth can ruin everything.3The one who guards his words guards his life, but whoever is talkative will come to ruin.
Lazy people want much but get little, but those who work hard will prosper.4The appetite of the sluggard craves but gets nothing, but the desire of the diligent will be abundantly satisfied.
The godly hate lies; the wicked cause shame and disgrace.5The righteous person hates anything false, but the wicked person acts in shameful disgrace.
Godliness guards the path of the blameless, but the evil are misled by sin.6Righteousness guards the one who lives with integrity, but wickedness overthrows the sinner.
Some who are poor pretend to be rich; others who are rich pretend to be poor.7There is one who pretends to be rich and yet has nothing; another pretends to be poor and yet possesses great wealth.
The rich can pay a ransom for their lives, but the poor won’t even get threatened.8The ransom of a person's life is his wealth, but the poor person hears no threat.
The life of the godly is full of light and joy, but the light of the wicked will be snuffed out.9The light of the righteous shines brightly, but the lamp of the wicked goes out.
Pride leads to conflict; those who take advice are wise.10With pride comes only contention, but wisdom is with the well-advised.
Wealth from get-rich-quick schemes quickly disappears; wealth from hard work grows over time.11Wealth gained quickly will dwindle away, but the one who gathers it little by little will become rich.
Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but a dream fulfilled is a tree of life.12Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but a longing fulfilled is like a tree of life.
People who despise advice are asking for trouble; those who respect a command will succeed.13The one who despises instruction will pay the penalty, but whoever esteems instruction will be rewarded.
The instruction of the wise is like a life-giving fountain; those who accept it avoid the snares of death.14Instruction from the wise is like a life-giving fountain, to turn a person from deadly snares.
A person with good sense is respected; a treacherous person is headed for destruction.15Keen insight wins favor, but the conduct of the unfaithful is harsh.
Wise people think before they act; fools don’t—and even brag about their foolishness.16Every shrewd person acts with knowledge, but a fool displays his folly.
An unreliable messenger stumbles into trouble, but a reliable messenger brings healing.17An unreliable messenger falls into trouble, but a faithful envoy brings healing.
If you ignore criticism, you will end in poverty and disgrace; if you accept correction, you will be honored.18The one who neglects discipline ends up in poverty and shame, but the one who accepts reproof is honored.
It is pleasant to see dreams come true, but fools refuse to turn from evil to attain them.19A desire fulfilled is sweet to the soul, but fools abhor turning away from evil.
Walk with the wise and become wise; associate with fools and get in trouble.20The one who associates with the wise grows wise, but a companion of fools suffers harm.
Trouble chases sinners, while blessings reward the righteous.21Calamity pursues sinners, but prosperity rewards the righteous.
Good people leave an inheritance to their grandchildren, but the sinner’s wealth passes to the godly.22A benevolent person leaves an inheritance for his grandchildren, but the wealth of a sinner is stored up for the righteous.
A poor person’s farm may produce much food, but injustice sweeps it all away.23There is abundant food in the field of the poor, but it is swept away by injustice.
Those who spare the rod of discipline hate their children. Those who love their children care enough to discipline them.24The one who spares his rod hates his child, but the one who loves his child is diligent in disciplining him.
The godly eat to their hearts’ content, but the belly of the wicked goes hungry.25The righteous has enough food to satisfy his appetite, but the belly of the wicked lacks food.
