Now the Holy Spirit tells us clearly that in the last times some will turn away from the true faith; they will follow deceptive spirits and teachings that come from demons.1Now the Spirit explicitly says that in the later times some will desert the faith and occupy themselves with deceiving spirits and demonic teachings,
These people are hypocrites and liars, and their consciences are dead.2influenced by the hypocrisy of liars whose consciences are seared.
They will say it is wrong to be married and wrong to eat certain foods. But God created those foods to be eaten with thanks by faithful people who know the truth.3They will prohibit marriage and require abstinence from foods that God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and know the truth.
Since everything God created is good, we should not reject any of it but receive it with thanks.4For every creation of God is good and no food is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving.
For we know it is made acceptable by the word of God and prayer. A Good Servant of Christ Jesus5For it is sanctified by God's word and by prayer.
If you explain these things to the brothers and sisters, Timothy, you will be a worthy servant of Christ Jesus, one who is nourished by the message of faith and the good teaching you have followed.6By pointing out such things to the brothers and sisters, you will be a good servant of Christ Jesus, having nourished yourself on the words of the faith and of the good teaching that you have followed.
Do not waste time arguing over godless ideas and old wives’ tales. Instead, train yourself to be godly.7But reject those myths fit only for the godless and gullible, and train yourself for godliness.
“Physical training is good, but training for godliness is much better, promising benefits in this life and in the life to come.”8For "physical exercise has some value, but godliness is valuable in every way. It holds promise for the present life and for the life to come."
This is a trustworthy saying, and everyone should accept it.9This saying is trustworthy and deserves full acceptance.
This is why we work hard and continue to struggle, for our hope is in the living God, who is the Savior of all people and particularly of all believers.10In fact this is why we work hard and struggle, because we have set our hope on the living God, who is the Savior of all people, especially of believers.
Teach these things and insist that everyone learn them.11Command and teach these things.
Don’t let anyone think less of you because you are young. Be an example to all believers in what you say, in the way you live, in your love, your faith, and your purity.12Let no one look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in your speech, conduct, love, faithfulness, and purity.
Until I get there, focus on reading the Scriptures to the church, encouraging the believers, and teaching them.13Until I come, give attention to the public reading of scripture, to exhortation, to teaching.
Do not neglect the spiritual gift you received through the prophecy spoken over you when the elders of the church laid their hands on you.14Do not neglect the spiritual gift you have, given to you and confirmed by prophetic words when the elders laid hands on you.
Give your complete attention to these matters. Throw yourself into your tasks so that everyone will see your progress.15Take pains with these things; be absorbed in them, so that everyone will see your progress.
Keep a close watch on how you live and on your teaching. Stay true to what is right for the sake of your own salvation and the salvation of those who hear you.16Be conscientious about how you live and what you teach. Persevere in this, because by doing so you will save both yourself and those who listen to you.
