NLT Parallel NASB [BSB CSB ESV HCS KJV ISV NAS NET NIV NLT HEB]
New Living TranslationNew American Standard Bible 1995
One day a petition was presented by the daughters of Zelophehad—Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah. Their father, Zelophehad, was a descendant of Hepher son of Gilead, son of Makir, son of Manasseh, son of Joseph.1Then the daughters of Zelophehad, the son of Hepher, the son of Gilead, the son of Machir, the son of Manasseh, of the families of Manasseh the son of Joseph, came near; and these are the names of his daughters: Mahlah, Noah and Hoglah and Milcah and Tirzah.
These women stood before Moses, Eleazar the priest, the tribal leaders, and the entire community at the entrance of the Tabernacle.2They stood before Moses and before Eleazar the priest and before the leaders and all the congregation, at the doorway of the tent of meeting, saying,
“Our father died in the wilderness,” they said. “He was not among Korah’s followers, who rebelled against the LORD; he died because of his own sin. But he had no sons.3"Our father died in the wilderness, yet he was not among the company of those who gathered themselves together against the LORD in the company of Korah; but he died in his own sin, and he had no sons.
Why should the name of our father disappear from his clan just because he had no sons? Give us property along with the rest of our relatives.”4"Why should the name of our father be withdrawn from among his family because he had no son? Give us a possession among our father's brothers."
So Moses brought their case before the LORD.5So Moses brought their case before the LORD.
And the LORD replied to Moses,6Then the LORD spoke to Moses, saying,
“The claim of the daughters of Zelophehad is legitimate. You must give them a grant of land along with their father’s relatives. Assign them the property that would have been given to their father.7"The daughters of Zelophehad are right in their statements. You shall surely give them a hereditary possession among their father's brothers, and you shall transfer the inheritance of their father to them.
“And give the following instructions to the people of Israel: If a man dies and has no son, then give his inheritance to his daughters.8"Further, you shall speak to the sons of Israel, saying, 'If a man dies and has no son, then you shall transfer his inheritance to his daughter.
And if he has no daughter either, transfer his inheritance to his brothers.9'If he has no daughter, then you shall give his inheritance to his brothers.
If he has no brothers, give his inheritance to his father’s brothers.10'If he has no brothers, then you shall give his inheritance to his father's brothers.
But if his father has no brothers, give his inheritance to the nearest relative in his clan. This is a legal requirement for the people of Israel, just as the LORD commanded Moses.” Joshua Chosen to Lead Israel11'If his father has no brothers, then you shall give his inheritance to his nearest relative in his own family, and he shall possess it; and it shall be a statutory ordinance to the sons of Israel, just as the LORD commanded Moses.'"
One day the LORD said to Moses, “Climb one of the mountains east of the river, and look out over the land I have given the people of Israel.12Then the LORD said to Moses, "Go up to this mountain of Abarim, and see the land which I have given to the sons of Israel.
After you have seen it, you will die like your brother, Aaron,13"When you have seen it, you too will be gathered to your people, as Aaron your brother was;
for you both rebelled against my instructions in the wilderness of Zin. When the people of Israel rebelled, you failed to demonstrate my holiness to them at the waters.” (These are the waters of Meribah at Kadesh in the wilderness of Zin.)14for in the wilderness of Zin, during the strife of the congregation, you rebelled against My command to treat Me as holy before their eyes at the water." (These are the waters of Meribah of Kadesh in the wilderness of Zin.)
Then Moses said to the LORD,15Then Moses spoke to the LORD, saying,
“O LORD, you are the God who gives breath to all creatures. Please appoint a new man as leader for the community.16"May the LORD, the God of the spirits of all flesh, appoint a man over the congregation,
Give them someone who will guide them wherever they go and will lead them into battle, so the community of the LORD will not be like sheep without a shepherd.”17who will go out and come in before them, and who will lead them out and bring them in, so that the congregation of the LORD will not be like sheep which have no shepherd."
The LORD replied, “Take Joshua son of Nun, who has the Spirit in him, and lay your hands on him.18So the LORD said to Moses, "Take Joshua the son of Nun, a man in whom is the Spirit, and lay your hand on him;
Present him to Eleazar the priest before the whole community, and publicly commission him to lead the people.19and have him stand before Eleazar the priest and before all the congregation, and commission him in their sight.
Transfer some of your authority to him so the whole community of Israel will obey him.20"You shall put some of your authority on him, in order that all the congregation of the sons of Israel may obey him.
When direction from the LORD is needed, Joshua will stand before Eleazar the priest, who will use the Urim—one of the sacred lots cast before the LORD—to determine his will. This is how Joshua and the rest of the community of Israel will determine everything they should do.”21"Moreover, he shall stand before Eleazar the priest, who shall inquire for him by the judgment of the Urim before the LORD. At his command they shall go out and at his command they shall come in, both he and the sons of Israel with him, even all the congregation."
So Moses did as the LORD commanded. He presented Joshua to Eleazar the priest and the whole community.22Moses did just as the LORD commanded him; and he took Joshua and set him before Eleazar the priest and before all the congregation.
Moses laid his hands on him and commissioned him to lead the people, just as the LORD had commanded through Moses.23Then he laid his hands on him and commissioned him, just as the LORD had spoken through Moses.
