New Living Translation | Holman Christian Standard Bible |
It was in the year King Uzziah died that I saw the Lord. He was sitting on a lofty throne, and the train of his robe filled the Temple. | 1In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord seated on a high and lofty throne, and His robe filled the temple. |
Attending him were mighty seraphim, each having six wings. With two wings they covered their faces, with two they covered their feet, and with two they flew. | 2Seraphim were standing above Him; each one had six wings: with two he covered his face, with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew. |
They were calling out to each other, “Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of Heaven’s Armies! The whole earth is filled with his glory!” | 3And one called to another: Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of Hosts; His glory fills the whole earth. |
Their voices shook the Temple to its foundations, and the entire building was filled with smoke. | 4The foundations of the doorways shook at the sound of their voices, and the temple was filled with smoke. |
Then I said, “It’s all over! I am doomed, for I am a sinful man. I have filthy lips, and I live among a people with filthy lips. Yet I have seen the King, the LORD of Heaven’s Armies.” | 5Then I said: Woe is me for I am ruined because I am a man of unclean lips and live among a people of unclean lips, and because my eyes have seen the King, the LORD of Hosts. |
Then one of the seraphim flew to me with a burning coal he had taken from the altar with a pair of tongs. | 6Then one of the seraphim flew to me, and in his hand was a glowing coal that he had taken from the altar with tongs. |
He touched my lips with it and said, “See, this coal has touched your lips. Now your guilt is removed, and your sins are forgiven.” | 7He touched my mouth with it and said: Now that this has touched your lips, your wickedness is removed and your sin is atoned for. |
Then I heard the Lord asking, “Whom should I send as a messenger to this people? Who will go for us?” I said, “Here I am. Send me.” | 8Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying: Who should I send? Who will go for Us? I said: Here I am. Send me. |
And he said, “Yes, go, and say to this people, ‘Listen carefully, but do not understand. Watch closely, but learn nothing.’ | 9And He replied: Go! Say to these people: Keep listening, but do not understand; keep looking, but do not perceive. |
Harden the hearts of these people. Plug their ears and shut their eyes. That way, they will not see with their eyes, nor hear with their ears, nor understand with their hearts and turn to me for healing.” | 10Dull the minds of these people; deafen their ears and blind their eyes; otherwise they might see with their eyes and hear with their ears, understand with their minds, turn back, and be healed. |
Then I said, “Lord, how long will this go on?” And he replied, “Until their towns are empty, their houses are deserted, and the whole country is a wasteland; | 11Then I said, "Until when, Lord?" And He replied: Until cities lie in ruins without inhabitants, houses are without people, the land is ruined and desolate, |
until the LORD has sent everyone away, and the entire land of Israel lies deserted. | 12and the LORD drives the people far away, leaving great emptiness in the land. |
If even a tenth—a remnant—survive, it will be invaded again and burned. But as a terebinth or oak tree leaves a stump when it is cut down, so Israel’s stump will be a holy seed.” | 13Though a tenth will remain in the land, it will be burned again. Like the terebinth or the oak that leaves a stump when felled, the holy seed is the stump. |
