| 1In the seventh year of Jehu, Jehoash became king, and he reigned forty years in Jerusalem. His mother’s name was Zibiah of Beersheba. | 1In Jehu's seventh year Jehoash became king; he reigned for forty years in Jerusalem. His mother was Zibiah, who was from Beer Sheba. |
| 2Jehoash did what was right in the sight of the LORD all the days in which Jehoiada the priest instructed him. | 2Throughout his lifetime Jehoash did what the LORD approved, just as Jehoiada the priest taught him. |
| 3But the high places were not taken away; the people still sacrificed and burned incense on the high places. | 3But the high places were not eliminated; the people continued to offer sacrifices and burn incense on the high places. |
| 4And Jehoash said to the priests, “All the money of the dedicated gifts that are brought into the house of the LORD—each man’s census money, each man’s assessment money—and all the money that a man purposes in his heart to bring into the house of the LORD, | 4Jehoash said to the priests, "I place at your disposal all the consecrated silver that has been brought to the LORD's temple, including the silver collected from the census tax, the silver received from those who have made vows, and all the silver that people have voluntarily contributed to the LORD's temple. |
| 5let the priests take it themselves, each from his constituency; and let them repair the damages of the temple, wherever any dilapidation is found.” | 5The priests should receive the silver they need from the treasurers and repair any damage to the temple they discover." |
| 6Now it was so, by the twenty-third year of King Jehoash, that the priests had not repaired the damages of the temple. | 6By the twenty-third year of King Jehoash's reign the priests had still not repaired the damage to the temple. |
| 7So King Jehoash called Jehoiada the priest and the other priests, and said to them, “Why have you not repaired the damages of the temple? Now therefore, do not take more money from your constituency, but deliver it for repairing the damages of the temple.” | 7So King Jehoash summoned Jehoiada the priest along with the other priests, and said to them, "Why have you not repaired the damage to the temple? Now, take no more silver from your treasurers unless you intend to use it to repair the damage." |
| 8And the priests agreed that they would neither receive more money from the people, nor repair the damages of the temple. | 8The priests agreed not to collect silver from the people and relieved themselves of personal responsibility for the temple repairs. |
| 9Then Jehoiada the priest took a chest, bored a hole in its lid, and set it beside the altar, on the right side as one comes into the house of the LORD; and the priests who kept the door put there all the money brought into the house of the LORD. | 9Jehoiada the priest took a chest and drilled a hole in its lid. He placed it on the right side of the altar near the entrance of the LORD's temple. The priests who guarded the entrance would put into it all the silver brought to the LORD's temple. |
| 10So it was, whenever they saw that there was much money in the chest, that the king’s scribe and the high priest came up and put it in bags, and counted the money that was found in the house of the LORD. | 10When they saw the chest was full of silver, the royal secretary and the high priest counted the silver that had been brought to the LORD's temple and bagged it up. |
| 11Then they gave the money, which had been apportioned, into the hands of those who did the work, who had the oversight of the house of the LORD; and they paid it out to the carpenters and builders who worked on the house of the LORD, | 11They would then hand over the silver that had been weighed to the construction foremen assigned to the LORD's temple. They hired carpenters and builders to work on the LORD's temple, |
| 12and to masons and stonecutters, and for buying timber and hewn stone, to repair the damage of the house of the LORD, and for all that was paid out to repair the temple. | 12as well as masons and stonecutters. They bought wood and chiseled stone to repair the damage to the LORD's temple and also paid for all the other expenses. |
| 13However there were not made for the house of the LORD basins of silver, trimmers, sprinkling-bowls, trumpets, any articles of gold or articles of silver, from the money brought into the house of the LORD. | 13The silver brought to the LORD's temple was not used for silver bowls, trimming shears, basins, trumpets, or any kind of gold or silver implements. |
| 14But they gave that to the workmen, and they repaired the house of the LORD with it. | 14It was handed over to the foremen who used it to repair the LORD's temple. |
| 15Moreover they did not require an account from the men into whose hand they delivered the money to be paid to workmen, for they dealt faithfully. | 15They did not audit the treasurers who disbursed the funds to the foremen, for they were honest. |
| 16The money from the trespass offerings and the money from the sin offerings was not brought into the house of the LORD. It belonged to the priests. | 16(The silver collected in conjunction with reparation offerings and sin offerings was not brought to the LORD's temple; it belonged to the priests.) |
| 17Hazael king of Syria went up and fought against Gath, and took it; then Hazael set his face to go up to Jerusalem. | 17At that time King Hazael of Syria attacked Gath and captured it. Hazael then decided to attack Jerusalem. |
| 18And Jehoash king of Judah took all the sacred things that his fathers, Jehoshaphat and Jehoram and Ahaziah, kings of Judah, had dedicated, and his own sacred things, and all the gold found in the treasuries of the house of the LORD and in the king’s house, and sent them to Hazael king of Syria. Then he went away from Jerusalem. | 18King Jehoash of Judah collected all the sacred items that his ancestors Jehoshaphat, Jehoram, and Ahaziah, kings of Judah, had consecrated, as well as his own sacred items and all the gold that could be found in the treasuries of the LORD's temple and the royal palace. He sent it all to King Hazael of Syria, who then withdrew from Jerusalem. |
| 19Now the rest of the acts of Joash, and all that he did, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah? | 19The rest of the events of Joash's reign, including all his accomplishments, are recorded in the scroll called the Annals of the Kings of Judah. |
| 20And his servants arose and formed a conspiracy, and killed Joash in the house of the Millo, which goes down to Silla. | 20His servants conspired against him and murdered Joash at Beth-Millo, on the road that goes down to Silla. |
| 21For Jozachar the son of Shimeath and Jehozabad the son of Shomer, his servants, struck him. So he died, and they buried him with his fathers in the City of David. Then Amaziah his son reigned in his place. | 21His servants Jozabad son of Shimeath and Jehozabad son of Shomer murdered him. He was buried with his ancestors in the city of David. His son Amaziah replaced him as king. |
