Now the LORD spoke to Moses in the Wilderness of Sinai, in the tabernacle of meeting, on the first day of the second month, in the second year after they had come out of the land of Egypt, saying: | 1The LORD spoke to Moses in the tent of meeting in the Wilderness of Sinai, on the first day of the second month of the second year after Israel's departure from the land of Egypt: |
“Take a census of all the congregation of the children of Israel, by their families, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of names, every male individually, | 2"Take a census of the entire Israelite community by their clans and their fathers' families, counting the names of every male one by one. |
from twenty years old and above—all who are able to go to war in Israel. You and Aaron shall number them by their armies. | 3You and Aaron are to register those who are twenty years old or more by their military divisions--everyone who can serve in Israel's army. |
And with you there shall be a man from every tribe, each one the head of his father’s house. | 4A man from each tribe is to be with you, each one the head of his ancestral family. |
“These are the names of the men who shall stand with you: from Reuben, Elizur the son of Shedeur; | 5These are the names of the men who are to assist you: Elizur son of Shedeur from Reuben; |
from Simeon, Shelumiel the son of Zurishaddai; | 6Shelumiel son of Zurishaddai from Simeon; |
from Judah, Nahshon the son of Amminadab; | 7Nahshon son of Amminadab from Judah; |
from Issachar, Nethanel the son of Zuar; | 8Nethanel son of Zuar from Issachar; |
from Zebulun, Eliab the son of Helon; | 9Eliab son of Helon from Zebulun; |
from the sons of Joseph: from Ephraim, Elishama the son of Ammihud; from Manasseh, Gamaliel the son of Pedahzur; | 10from the sons of Joseph: Elishama son of Ammihud from Ephraim, Gamaliel son of Pedahzur from Manasseh; |
from Benjamin, Abidan the son of Gideoni; | 11Abidan son of Gideoni from Benjamin; |
from Dan, Ahiezer the son of Ammishaddai; | 12Ahiezer son of Ammishaddai from Dan; |
from Asher, Pagiel the son of Ocran; | 13Pagiel son of Ochran from Asher; |
from Gad, Eliasaph the son of Deuel; | 14Eliasaph son of Deuel from Gad; |
from Naphtali, Ahira the son of Enan.” | 15Ahira son of Enan from Naphtali. |
These were chosen from the congregation, leaders of their fathers’ tribes, heads of the divisions in Israel. | 16These are the men called from the community; they are leaders of their ancestral tribes, the heads of Israel's clans." |
Then Moses and Aaron took these men who had been mentioned by name, | 17So Moses and Aaron took these men who had been designated by name, |
and they assembled all the congregation together on the first day of the second month; and they recited their ancestry by families, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and above, each one individually. | 18and they assembled the whole community on the first day of the second month. They recorded their ancestry by their clans and their ancestral families, counting one by one the names of those twenty years old or more, |
As the LORD commanded Moses, so he numbered them in the Wilderness of Sinai. | 19just as the LORD commanded Moses. He registered them in the Wilderness of Sinai: |
Now the children of Reuben, Israel’s oldest son, their genealogies by their families, by their fathers’ house, according to the number of names, every male individually, from twenty years old and above, all who were able to go to war: | 20The descendants of Reuben, the firstborn of Israel: according to their family records by their clans and their ancestral families, counting one by one the names of every male twenty years old or more, everyone who could serve in the army, |

From the children of Zebulun, their genealogies by their families, by their fathers’ house, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and above, all who were able to go to war: | 30The descendants of Zebulun: according to their family records by their clans and their ancestral families, counting the names of those twenty years old or more, everyone who could serve in the army, |
those who were numbered of the tribe of Zebulun were fifty-seven thousand four hundred. | 31those registered for the tribe of Zebulun numbered 57,400. |
From the sons of Joseph, the children of Ephraim, their genealogies by their families, by their fathers’ house, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and above, all who were able to go to war: | 32The descendants of Joseph: The descendants of Ephraim: according to their family records by their clans and their ancestral families, counting the names of those twenty years old or more, everyone who could serve in the army, |
those who were numbered of the tribe of Ephraim were forty thousand five hundred. | 33those registered for the tribe of Ephraim numbered 40,500. |
From the children of Manasseh, their genealogies by their families, by their fathers’ house, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and above, all who were able to go to war: | 34The descendants of Manasseh: according to their family records by their clans and their ancestral families, counting the names of those twenty years old or more, everyone who could serve in the army, |
those who were numbered of the tribe of Manasseh were thirty-two thousand two hundred. | 35those registered for the tribe of Manasseh numbered 32,200. |
From the children of Benjamin, their genealogies by their families, by their fathers’ house, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and above, all who were able to go to war: | 36The descendants of Benjamin: according to their family records by their clans and their ancestral families, counting the names of those twenty years old or more, everyone who could serve in the army, |
those who were numbered of the tribe of Benjamin were thirty-five thousand four hundred. | 37those registered for the tribe of Benjamin numbered 35,400. |
From the children of Dan, their genealogies by their families, by their fathers’ house, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and above, all who were able to go to war: | 38The descendants of Dan: according to their family records by their clans and their ancestral families, counting the names of those twenty years old or more, everyone who could serve in the army, |
those who were numbered of the tribe of Dan were sixty-two thousand seven hundred. | 39those registered for the tribe of Dan numbered 62,700. |
From the children of Asher, their genealogies by their families, by their fathers’ house, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and above, all who were able to go to war: | 40The descendants of Asher: according to their family records by their clans and their ancestral families, counting the names of those twenty years old or more, everyone who could serve in the army, |
those who were numbered of the tribe of Asher were forty-one thousand five hundred. | 41those registered for the tribe of Asher numbered 41,500. |
From the children of Naphtali, their genealogies by their families, by their fathers’ house, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and above, all who were able to go to war: | 42The descendants of Naphtali: according to their family records by their clans and their ancestral families, counting the names of those twenty years old or more, everyone who could serve in the army, |

These are the ones who were numbered, whom Moses and Aaron numbered, with the leaders of Israel, twelve men, each one representing his father’s house. | 44These are the men Moses and Aaron registered, with the assistance of the twelve leaders of Israel; each represented his ancestral family. |
So all who were numbered of the children of Israel, by their fathers’ houses, from twenty years old and above, all who were able to go to war in Israel— | 45So all the Israelites twenty years old or more, everyone who could serve in Israel's army, were registered by their ancestral families. |
all who were numbered were six hundred and three thousand five hundred and fifty. | 46All those registered numbered 603,550. |
But the Levites were not numbered among them by their fathers’ tribe; | 47But the Levites were not registered with them by their ancestral tribe. |
for the LORD had spoken to Moses, saying: | 48For the LORD had told Moses: |
“Only the tribe of Levi you shall not number, nor take a census of them among the children of Israel; | 49"Do not register or take a census of the tribe of Levi with the other Israelites. |
but you shall appoint the Levites over the tabernacle of the Testimony, over all its furnishings, and over all things that belong to it; they shall carry the tabernacle and all its furnishings; they shall attend to it and camp around the tabernacle. | 50Appoint the Levites over the tabernacle of the testimony, all its furnishings, and everything in it. They are to transport the tabernacle and all its articles, take care of it, and camp around it. |
And when the tabernacle is to go forward, the Levites shall take it down; and when the tabernacle is to be set up, the Levites shall set it up. The outsider who comes near shall be put to death. | 51Whenever the tabernacle is to move, the Levites are to take it down, and whenever it is to stop at a campsite, the Levites are to set it up. Any unauthorized person who comes near it is to be put to death. |
The children of Israel shall pitch their tents, everyone by his own camp, everyone by his own standard, according to their armies; | 52"The Israelites are to camp by their military divisions, each man with his encampment and under his banner. |
but the Levites shall camp around the tabernacle of the Testimony, that there may be no wrath on the congregation of the children of Israel; and the Levites shall keep charge of the tabernacle of the Testimony.” | 53The Levites are to camp around the tabernacle of the testimony and watch over it, so that no wrath will fall on the Israelite community." |
Thus the children of Israel did; according to all that the LORD commanded Moses, so they did. | 54The Israelites did everything just as the LORD had commanded Moses. |
