New International VersionNET Bible
Every high priest is selected from among the people and is appointed to represent the people in matters related to God, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins.1For every high priest is taken from among the people and appointed to represent them before God, to offer both gifts and sacrifices for sins.
He is able to deal gently with those who are ignorant and are going astray, since he himself is subject to weakness.2He is able to deal compassionately with those who are ignorant and erring, since he also is subject to weakness,
This is why he has to offer sacrifices for his own sins, as well as for the sins of the people.3and for this reason he is obligated to make sin offerings for himself as well as for the people.
And no one takes this honor on himself, but he receives it when called by God, just as Aaron was.4And no one assumes this honor on his own initiative, but only when called to it by God, as in fact Aaron was.
In the same way, Christ did not take on himself the glory of becoming a high priest. But God said to him, "You are my Son; today I have become your Father."5So also Christ did not glorify himself in becoming high priest, but the one who glorified him was God, who said to him, "You are my Son! Today I have fathered you,"
And he says in another place, "You are a priest forever, in the order of Melchizedek."6as also in another place God says, "You are a priest forever in the order of Melchizedek."
During the days of Jesus' life on earth, he offered up prayers and petitions with fervent cries and tears to the one who could save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverent submission.7During his earthly life Christ offered both requests and supplications, with loud cries and tears, to the one who was able to save him from death and he was heard because of his devotion.
Son though he was, he learned obedience from what he suffered8Although he was a son, he learned obedience through the things he suffered.
and, once made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him9And by being perfected in this way, he became the source of eternal salvation to all who obey him,
and was designated by God to be high priest in the order of Melchizedek.10and he was designated by God as high priest in the order of Melchizedek.
We have much to say about this, but it is hard to make it clear to you because you no longer try to understand.11On this topic we have much to say and it is difficult to explain, since you have become sluggish in hearing.
In fact, though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you the elementary truths of God's word all over again. You need milk, not solid food!12For though you should in fact be teachers by this time, you need someone to teach you the beginning elements of God's utterances. You have gone back to needing milk, not solid food.
Anyone who lives on milk, being still an infant, is not acquainted with the teaching about righteousness.13For everyone who lives on milk is inexperienced in the message of righteousness, because he is an infant.
But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil.14But solid food is for the mature, whose perceptions are trained by practice to discern both good and evil.
