Hebrews 5
NIV Parallel ISV [BSB CSB ESV HCS KJV ISV NAS NET NIV NLT GRK]
New International VersionInternational Standard Version
Every high priest is selected from among the people and is appointed to represent the people in matters related to God, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins.1For every high priest selected from among men is appointed to officiate on their behalf in matters relating to God, that is, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins.
He is able to deal gently with those who are ignorant and are going astray, since he himself is subject to weakness.2He can deal gently with people who are ignorant and easily deceived, since he himself is subject to weakness.
This is why he has to offer sacrifices for his own sins, as well as for the sins of the people.3For that reason he is obligated to offer sacrifices for his own sins as well as for those of the people.
And no one takes this honor on himself, but he receives it when called by God, just as Aaron was.4No one takes this honor upon himself but he is called to it by God, just as Aaron was.
In the same way, Christ did not take on himself the glory of becoming a high priest. But God said to him, "You are my Son; today I have become your Father."5In the same way, the Messiah did not take upon himself the glory of being a high priest. No, it was God who said to him, "You are my Son. Today I have become your Father."
And he says in another place, "You are a priest forever, in the order of Melchizedek."6As he also says in another place, "You are a priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek."
During the days of Jesus' life on earth, he offered up prayers and petitions with fervent cries and tears to the one who could save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverent submission.7As a mortal man, he offered up prayers and appeals with loud cries and tears to the one who was able to save him from death, and he was heard because of his devotion to God.
Son though he was, he learned obedience from what he suffered8Son though he was, he learned obedience through his sufferings
and, once made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him9and, once made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him,
and was designated by God to be high priest in the order of Melchizedek.10having been designated by God to be a high priest according to the order of Melchizedek.
We have much to say about this, but it is hard to make it clear to you because you no longer try to understand.11We have much to say about this, but it is difficult to explain because you have become too lazy to understand.
In fact, though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you the elementary truths of God's word all over again. You need milk, not solid food!12In fact, though by now you should be teachers, you still need someone to teach you the basic truths of God's word. You have become people who need milk instead of solid food.
Anyone who lives on milk, being still an infant, is not acquainted with the teaching about righteousness.13For everyone who lives on milk is still a baby and does not yet know the difference between right and wrong.
But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil.14But solid food is for mature people, whose minds are trained by practice to distinguish good from evil.
