New International Version | New American Standard Bible 1995 |
Wisdom has built her house; she has set up its seven pillars. | 1Wisdom has built her house, She has hewn out her seven pillars; |
She has prepared her meat and mixed her wine; she has also set her table. | 2She has prepared her food, she has mixed her wine; She has also set her table; |
She has sent out her servants, and she calls from the highest point of the city, | 3She has sent out her maidens, she calls From the tops of the heights of the city: |
"Let all who are simple come to my house!" To those who have no sense she says, | 4"Whoever is naive, let him turn in here!" To him who lacks understanding she says, |
"Come, eat my food and drink the wine I have mixed. | 5"Come, eat of my food And drink of the wine I have mixed. |
Leave your simple ways and you will live; walk in the way of insight." | 6"Forsake your folly and live, And proceed in the way of understanding." |
Whoever corrects a mocker invites insults; whoever rebukes the wicked incurs abuse. | 7He who corrects a scoffer gets dishonor for himself, And he who reproves a wicked man gets insults for himself. |
Do not rebuke mockers or they will hate you; rebuke the wise and they will love you. | 8Do not reprove a scoffer, or he will hate you, Reprove a wise man and he will love you. |
Instruct the wise and they will be wiser still; teach the righteous and they will add to their learning. | 9Give instruction to a wise man and he will be still wiser, Teach a righteous man and he will increase his learning. |
The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding. | 10The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, And the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding. |
For through wisdom your days will be many, and years will be added to your life. | 11For by me your days will be multiplied, And years of life will be added to you. |
If you are wise, your wisdom will reward you; if you are a mocker, you alone will suffer. | 12If you are wise, you are wise for yourself, And if you scoff, you alone will bear it. |
Folly is an unruly woman; she is simple and knows nothing. | 13The woman of folly is boisterous, She is naive and knows nothing. |
She sits at the door of her house, on a seat at the highest point of the city, | 14She sits at the doorway of her house, On a seat by the high places of the city, |
calling out to those who pass by, who go straight on their way, | 15Calling to those who pass by, Who are making their paths straight: |
"Let all who are simple come to my house!" To those who have no sense she says, | 16"Whoever is naive, let him turn in here," And to him who lacks understanding she says, |
"Stolen water is sweet; food eaten in secret is delicious!" | 17"Stolen water is sweet; And bread eaten in secret is pleasant." |
But little do they know that the dead are there, that her guests are deep in the realm of the dead. | 18But he does not know that the dead are there, That her guests are in the depths of Sheol. |
