New International Version | New American Standard Bible 1995 |
My spirit is broken, my days are cut short, the grave awaits me. | 1"My spirit is broken, my days are extinguished, The grave is ready for me. |
Surely mockers surround me; my eyes must dwell on their hostility. | 2"Surely mockers are with me, And my eye gazes on their provocation. |
"Give me, O God, the pledge you demand. Who else will put up security for me? | 3"Lay down, now, a pledge for me with Yourself; Who is there that will be my guarantor? |
You have closed their minds to understanding; therefore you will not let them triumph. | 4"For You have kept their heart from understanding, Therefore You will not exalt them. |
If anyone denounces their friends for reward, the eyes of their children will fail. | 5"He who informs against friends for a share of the spoil, The eyes of his children also will languish. |
"God has made me a byword to everyone, a man in whose face people spit. | 6"But He has made me a byword of the people, And I am one at whom men spit. |
My eyes have grown dim with grief; my whole frame is but a shadow. | 7"My eye has also grown dim because of grief, And all my members are as a shadow. |
The upright are appalled at this; the innocent are aroused against the ungodly. | 8"The upright will be appalled at this, And the innocent will stir up himself against the godless. |
Nevertheless, the righteous will hold to their ways, and those with clean hands will grow stronger. | 9"Nevertheless the righteous will hold to his way, And he who has clean hands will grow stronger and stronger. |
"But come on, all of you, try again! I will not find a wise man among you. | 10"But come again all of you now, For I do not find a wise man among you. |
My days have passed, my plans are shattered. Yet the desires of my heart | 11"My days are past, my plans are torn apart, Even the wishes of my heart. |
turn night into day; in the face of the darkness light is near. | 12"They make night into day, saying, 'The light is near,' in the presence of darkness. |
If the only home I hope for is the grave, if I spread out my bed in the realm of darkness, | 13"If I look for Sheol as my home, I make my bed in the darkness; |
if I say to corruption, 'You are my father,' and to the worm, 'My mother' or 'My sister,' | 14If I call to the pit, 'You are my father'; To the worm, 'my mother and my sister'; |
where then is my hope-- who can see any hope for me? | 15Where now is my hope? And who regards my hope? |
Will it go down to the gates of death? Will we descend together into the dust?" | 16"Will it go down with me to Sheol? Shall we together go down into the dust?" |
