New International VersionNew American Standard Bible 1995
Be careful to follow every command I am giving you today, so that you may live and increase and may enter and possess the land the LORD promised on oath to your ancestors.1"All the commandments that I am commanding you today you shall be careful to do, that you may live and multiply, and go in and possess the land which the LORD swore to give to your forefathers.
Remember how the LORD your God led you all the way in the wilderness these forty years, to humble and test you in order to know what was in your heart, whether or not you would keep his commands.2"You shall remember all the way which the LORD your God has led you in the wilderness these forty years, that He might humble you, testing you, to know what was in your heart, whether you would keep His commandments or not.
He humbled you, causing you to hunger and then feeding you with manna, which neither you nor your ancestors had known, to teach you that man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the LORD.3"He humbled you and let you be hungry, and fed you with manna which you did not know, nor did your fathers know, that He might make you understand that man does not live by bread alone, but man lives by everything that proceeds out of the mouth of the LORD.
Your clothes did not wear out and your feet did not swell during these forty years.4"Your clothing did not wear out on you, nor did your foot swell these forty years.
Know then in your heart that as a man disciplines his son, so the LORD your God disciplines you.5"Thus you are to know in your heart that the LORD your God was disciplining you just as a man disciplines his son.
Observe the commands of the LORD your God, walking in obedience to him and revering him.6"Therefore, you shall keep the commandments of the LORD your God, to walk in His ways and to fear Him.
For the LORD your God is bringing you into a good land--a land with brooks, streams, and deep springs gushing out into the valleys and hills;7"For the LORD your God is bringing you into a good land, a land of brooks of water, of fountains and springs, flowing forth in valleys and hills;
a land with wheat and barley, vines and fig trees, pomegranates, olive oil and honey;8a land of wheat and barley, of vines and fig trees and pomegranates, a land of olive oil and honey;
a land where bread will not be scarce and you will lack nothing; a land where the rocks are iron and you can dig copper out of the hills.9a land where you will eat food without scarcity, in which you will not lack anything; a land whose stones are iron, and out of whose hills you can dig copper.
When you have eaten and are satisfied, praise the LORD your God for the good land he has given you.10"When you have eaten and are satisfied, you shall bless the LORD your God for the good land which He has given you.
Be careful that you do not forget the LORD your God, failing to observe his commands, his laws and his decrees that I am giving you this day.11"Beware that you do not forget the LORD your God by not keeping His commandments and His ordinances and His statutes which I am commanding you today;
Otherwise, when you eat and are satisfied, when you build fine houses and settle down,12otherwise, when you have eaten and are satisfied, and have built good houses and lived in them,
and when your herds and flocks grow large and your silver and gold increase and all you have is multiplied,13and when your herds and your flocks multiply, and your silver and gold multiply, and all that you have multiplies,
then your heart will become proud and you will forget the LORD your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.14then your heart will become proud and you will forget the LORD your God who brought you out from the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.
He led you through the vast and dreadful wilderness, that thirsty and waterless land, with its venomous snakes and scorpions. He brought you water out of hard rock.15"He led you through the great and terrible wilderness, with its fiery serpents and scorpions and thirsty ground where there was no water; He brought water for you out of the rock of flint.
He gave you manna to eat in the wilderness, something your ancestors had never known, to humble and test you so that in the end it might go well with you.16"In the wilderness He fed you manna which your fathers did not know, that He might humble you and that He might test you, to do good for you in the end.
You may say to yourself, "My power and the strength of my hands have produced this wealth for me."17"Otherwise, you may say in your heart, 'My power and the strength of my hand made me this wealth.'
But remember the LORD your God, for it is he who gives you the ability to produce wealth, and so confirms his covenant, which he swore to your ancestors, as it is today.18"But you shall remember the LORD your God, for it is He who is giving you power to make wealth, that He may confirm His covenant which He swore to your fathers, as it is this day.
If you ever forget the LORD your God and follow other gods and worship and bow down to them, I testify against you today that you will surely be destroyed.19"It shall come about if you ever forget the LORD your God and go after other gods and serve them and worship them, I testify against you today that you will surely perish.
Like the nations the LORD destroyed before you, so you will be destroyed for not obeying the LORD your God.20"Like the nations that the LORD makes to perish before you, so you shall perish; because you would not listen to the voice of the LORD your God.
