| 1The LORD spoke to Moses in the tent of meeting in the Desert of Sinai on the first day of the second month of the second year after the Israelites came out of Egypt. | 2"Take a census of the whole Israelite community by their clans and families, listing every man by name, one by one. | 2“Take a census of all the congregation of the people of Israel, by clans, by fathers’ houses, according to the number of names, every male, head by head. |
| 3You and Aaron are to count according to their divisions all the men in Israel who are twenty years old or more and able to serve in the army. | 3From twenty years old and upward, all in Israel who are able to go to war, you and Aaron shall list them, company by company. |
| 4One man from each tribe, each of them the head of his family, is to help you. | 4And there shall be with you a man from each tribe, each man being the head of the house of his fathers. |

| 16These were the men appointed from the community, the leaders of their ancestral tribes. They were the heads of the clans of Israel. | 16These were the ones chosen from the congregation, the chiefs of their ancestral tribes, the heads of the clans of Israel. |
| 17Moses and Aaron took these men whose names had been specified, | 17Moses and Aaron took these men who had been named, |
| 18and they called the whole community together on the first day of the second month. The people registered their ancestry by their clans and families, and the men twenty years old or more were listed by name, one by one, | 18and on the first day of the second month, they assembled the whole congregation together, who registered themselves by clans, by fathers’ houses, according to the number of names from twenty years old and upward, head by head, |
| 19as the LORD commanded Moses. And so he counted them in the Desert of Sinai: | 19as the LORD commanded Moses. So he listed them in the wilderness of Sinai. |
| 20From the descendants of Reuben the firstborn son of Israel: All the men twenty years old or more who were able to serve in the army were listed by name, one by one, according to the records of their clans and families. | 20The people of Reuben, Israel’s firstborn, their generations, by their clans, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of names, head by head, every male from twenty years old and upward, all who were able to go to war: |

| 22From the descendants of Simeon: All the men twenty years old or more who were able to serve in the army were counted and listed by name, one by one, according to the records of their clans and families. | 22Of the people of Simeon, their generations, by their clans, by their fathers’ houses, those of them who were listed, according to the number of names, head by head, every male from twenty years old and upward, all who were able to go to war: |

| 41The number from the tribe of Asher was 41,500. | 41those listed of the tribe of Asher were 41,500. |
| 42From the descendants of Naphtali: All the men twenty years old or more who were able to serve in the army were listed by name, according to the records of their clans and families. | 42Of the people of Naphtali, their generations, by their clans, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, every man able to go to war: |
| 43The number from the tribe of Naphtali was 53,400. | 43those listed of the tribe of Naphtali were 53,400. |
| 44These were the men counted by Moses and Aaron and the twelve leaders of Israel, each one representing his family. | 44These are those who were listed, whom Moses and Aaron listed with the help of the chiefs of Israel, twelve men, each representing his fathers’ house. |
| 45All the Israelites twenty years old or more who were able to serve in Israel's army were counted according to their families. | 45So all those listed of the people of Israel, by their fathers’ houses, from twenty years old and upward, every man able to go to war in Israel— |
| 46The total number was 603,550. | 46all those listed were 603,550. |
| 47The ancestral tribe of the Levites, however, was not counted along with the others. | 47But the Levites were not listed along with them by their ancestral tribe. |
| 48The LORD had said to Moses: | 48For the LORD spoke to Moses, saying, |
| 49"You must not count the tribe of Levi or include them in the census of the other Israelites. | 49“Only the tribe of Levi you shall not list, and you shall not take a census of them among the people of Israel. |
| 50Instead, appoint the Levites to be in charge of the tabernacle of the covenant law--over all its furnishings and everything belonging to it. They are to carry the tabernacle and all its furnishings; they are to take care of it and encamp around it. | 50But appoint the Levites over the tabernacle of the testimony, and over all its furnishings, and over all that belongs to it. They are to carry the tabernacle and all its furnishings, and they shall take care of it and shall camp around the tabernacle. |
| 51Whenever the tabernacle is to move, the Levites are to take it down, and whenever the tabernacle is to be set up, the Levites shall do it. Anyone else who approaches it is to be put to death. | 51When the tabernacle is to set out, the Levites shall take it down, and when the tabernacle is to be pitched, the Levites shall set it up. And if any outsider comes near, he shall be put to death. |
| 52The Israelites are to set up their tents by divisions, each of them in their own camp under their standard. | 52The people of Israel shall pitch their tents by their companies, each man in his own camp and each man by his own standard. |
| 53The Levites, however, are to set up their tents around the tabernacle of the covenant law so that my wrath will not fall on the Israelite community. The Levites are to be responsible for the care of the tabernacle of the covenant law." | 53But the Levites shall camp around the tabernacle of the testimony, so that there may be no wrath on the congregation of the people of Israel. And the Levites shall keep guard over the tabernacle of the testimony.” |
| 54The Israelites did all this just as the LORD commanded Moses. | 54Thus did the people of Israel; they did according to all that the LORD commanded Moses. |
