After a long time had passed and the LORD had given Israel rest from all their enemies around them, Joshua, by then a very old man,1A long time after the LORD had given Israel rest from all the enemies around them, Joshua was old, advanced in age.
summoned all Israel--their elders, leaders, judges and officials--and said to them: "I am very old.2So Joshua summoned all Israel, including its elders, leaders, judges, and officers, and said to them, "I am old, advanced in age,
You yourselves have seen everything the LORD your God has done to all these nations for your sake; it was the LORD your God who fought for you.3and you have seen for yourselves everything the LORD your God did to all these nations on your account, because it was the LORD your God who was fighting for you.
Remember how I have allotted as an inheritance for your tribes all the land of the nations that remain--the nations I conquered--between the Jordan and the Mediterranean Sea in the west.4See, I have allotted these remaining nations to you as an inheritance for your tribes, including all the nations I have destroyed, from the Jordan westward to the Mediterranean Sea.
The LORD your God himself will push them out for your sake. He will drive them out before you, and you will take possession of their land, as the LORD your God promised you.5The LORD your God will force them back on your account and drive them out before you so that you can take possession of their land, as the LORD your God promised you.
"Be very strong; be careful to obey all that is written in the Book of the Law of Moses, without turning aside to the right or to the left.6"Be very strong and continue obeying all that is written in the book of the law of Moses, so that you do not turn from it to the right or left
Do not associate with these nations that remain among you; do not invoke the names of their gods or swear by them. You must not serve them or bow down to them.7and so that you do not associate with these nations remaining among you. Do not call on the names of their gods or make an oath to them; do not serve them or bow in worship to them.
But you are to hold fast to the LORD your God, as you have until now.8Instead, be loyal to the LORD your God, as you have been to this day.
"The LORD has driven out before you great and powerful nations; to this day no one has been able to withstand you.9"The LORD has driven out great and powerful nations before you, and no one is able to stand against you to this day.
One of you routs a thousand, because the LORD your God fights for you, just as he promised.10One of you routed a thousand because the LORD your God was fighting for you, as he promised.
So be very careful to love the LORD your God.11So diligently watch yourselves! Love the LORD your God!
"But if you turn away and ally yourselves with the survivors of these nations that remain among you and if you intermarry with them and associate with them,12If you ever turn away and become loyal to the rest of these nations remaining among you, and if you intermarry or associate with them and they with you,
then you may be sure that the LORD your God will no longer drive out these nations before you. Instead, they will become snares and traps for you, whips on your backs and thorns in your eyes, until you perish from this good land, which the LORD your God has given you.13know for certain that the LORD your God will not continue to drive these nations out before you. They will become a snare and a trap for you, a sharp stick for your sides and thorns in your eyes, until you disappear from this good land the LORD your God has given you.
"Now I am about to go the way of all the earth. You know with all your heart and soul that not one of all the good promises the LORD your God gave you has failed. Every promise has been fulfilled; not one has failed.14"I am now going the way of the whole earth, and you know with all your heart and all your soul that none of the good promises the LORD your God made to you has failed. Everything was fulfilled for you; not one promise has failed.
But just as all the good things the LORD your God has promised you have come to you, so he will bring on you all the evil things he has threatened, until the LORD your God has destroyed you from this good land he has given you.15Since every good thing the LORD your God promised you has come about, so he will bring on you every bad thing until he has annihilated you from this good land the LORD your God has given you.
If you violate the covenant of the LORD your God, which he commanded you, and go and serve other gods and bow down to them, the LORD's anger will burn against you, and you will quickly perish from the good land he has given you."16If you break the covenant of the LORD your God, which he commanded you, and go and serve other gods, and bow in worship to them, the LORD's anger will burn against you, and you will quickly disappear from this good land he has given you."
